Off the coast of Mexico’s Baja peninsula, a Mobula Ray bursts from the swell with breathtaking beauty, catching air as its whip-like tail trails behind. The expression ‘like a fish out of water’ is used to convey the sense of feeling uncomfortable in a situation, but one look at the Mobula Ray soaring almost seven feet above the waves and discomfort is the last thing to enter the mind. Effortlessness is more like it.

The food Mobulas generally eat is krill, with filters in their gills that act as sieves, trapping the tiny shrimp-like crustaceans. It may be that the acrobatics trick prey into moving down into the mouths of other Mobulas below. Maybe.

Whatever its explanation, there is no doubting the brilliance of the way these fish get airborne to perform somersaults, double flips and belly-flops – moves which have led some to speculate that this is actually some form of exercise or play.

Just because they got their guy into the White House is no reason for Code Pink kooks to stop indulging in deplorable behavior.

Dressed as 'zombie soldiers' killed in combat, 'ghosts of war victims,' witches and healthcare fairies, members of Code Pink menacingly paraded in front of a captive audience of children one block from the White House, who waited along the sidewalk in front of Decatur House just off Lafayette Park for a Halloween party hosted by President Obama.

Last Saturday, the President hosted several hundred military families for trick or treating. Also invited were children of White House staff and about 2000 children from eleven D.C. area elementary schools.

Even al-Reuters was appalled. Check out their caption to the photo below:

New quantum algorithm helpes solving big problems.

The solution could also be applied to other complex processes such as image and video processing, genetic analyses and even Internet traffic control.

One of the most basic problems in maths is solving very large linear equations. There's nothing mysterious about them, they simply take time and the more variables there are, the longer it takes. Even a supercomputer would struggle to solve a system of equations that has a trillion variables.

Aram Harrow at the University of Bristol and colleagues from MIT in the United States have discovered a quantum algorithm that solves large problems much faster than conventional computers can.

To understand how the quantum algorithm works, think of a digital equaliser in a stereo CD player. The equaliser needs to amplify some components of the signal and attenuate others. Ordinary equalisers employ classical computer algorithms that treat each component of the sound one at a time.

By contrast, a quantum equaliser could employ a quantum algorithm that treats all components together at once (a trick called 'quantum parallelism'). The result is a huge reduction in the difficulty of signal processing.

In 70 BC, an ambitious minor politician and extremely wealthy man, Marcus Licinius Crassus, wanted to rule Rome. Just to give you an idea of what sort of man Crassus really was, he is credited with invention of the fire brigade. But in Crassus' version, his fire-fighting slaves would race to the scene of a burning building whereupon Crassus would offer to buy it on the spot for a tiny fraction of it's worth. If the owner sold, Crassus' slaves would put out the fire. If the owner refused to sell, Crassus allowed the building to burn to the ground. By means of this device, Crassus eventually came to be the largest single private land holder in Rome, and used some of his wealth to help back Julius Caesar against Cicero.

Halloween scareware - it was more trick than treat

New this year, were instances of 'job spamming', where 'real jobs' were advertised in spam, with a link that directs to a now inactive site. However, using Registry Whols, records show that the sites were created in August this year, probably to facilitate malicious profiteering activities. So think before you click, when you're online, every day is like Halloween.

If you can't find any swine flu vaccine for your kids, it won't be for a lack of positive thinking. In fact, the whole flu snafu is being blamed on "undue optimism" on the part of both the Obama administration and Big Pharma.
In July, the federal government promised to have 160 million doses of H1N1 vaccine ready for distribution by the end of October. Instead, only 28 million doses are now ready to go, and optimism is the obvious culprit. "Road to Flu Vaccine Shortfall, Paved With Undue Optimism," was the headline of a front page article in the October 26th New York Times.
But let's stop a minute and also ask: Who really screwed up here -- the government or private pharmaceutical companies
that had agreed to manufacture and deliver the vaccine by late fall? Last spring and summer, those companies gleefully gobbled up $2 billion worth of government contracts
promising to have
at least every American child and pregnant woman, supplied with vaccine before trick-or-treating season began

100 Things Restaurant Staffers Should Never Do (Part 2)

This is the second half of the 100 do’s and don’ts from last week’s post. Again, this list is for one particular restaurant, mine, which is under construction in Bridgehampton, N.Y., and will, with any luck, open this spring. I realize that every deli needs a wisecracking waiter, most pizza joints can handle heavy metal, and burgers always taste better when delivered by a server with tattoos and tongue piercing(s).

Not even a hundred suggestions can cover all the bases, so one is grateful for the many comments following the 50, including striking “you guys” from the restaurant lexicon and making sure the alcohol order is taken lickety-split. Thanks for all of the help.

51. If there is a service charge, alert your guests when you present the bill. It’s not a secret or a trick.

52. Know your menu inside and out. If you serve Balsam Farm candy-striped beets, know something about Balsam Farm and candy-striped beets.

But nooooo. Our senior senator was captured in yet another embarrassing Kodak moment with a couple of Emerson College students, who popped by his posh Louisburg Square digs to trick or treat on Halloween night.

Call us crazy, but does it look like Kerry may have ingested a bad ice cube or two before this photo op??? Where was the maid who usually has candy duty at Chez Heinz on Halloween???

“I think the caption should read: The senator is pictured discussing climate change legislation with two constituents. He was flattered until they told him he looked just like their grandfather,” joked Kerry spokesgal Jodi Seth .

Now if this Halloween faux pas were a one-time occurrence, we could let it pass with minimal ridicule

Apparently, they don’t call him Liveshot for nothing!
