Channel X goes online with i-Rights

UK comedy producer Channel X is launching its first online series and has signed a three-year deal with digital distribution outfit i-Rights to distribute this and future projects.

Chelsey: OMG! is a 10-part web comedy aimed at 16-25s written by comedian Nat Coombs, based on a character originally created for his BBC Radio 1 sketch show The Milk Run.

The series is set to launch on Bebo soon and i-Rights - a business acquired by Digital Rights Group last year - will handle international sales as well as forming a broader distribution agreement with Channel X.

The tie-up between the two is similar to the one-year arrangement that i-Rights inked with another comedy producer, Hat Trick Productions, two years ago.

Hat Trick is now poised to release its first online drama, Neon Candy, commissioned by car manufacturer Ford's media agency Mindshare, and distributing on MSN Video.

German researchers have discovered that coughing during an injection can lessen the pain of the needle stick. According to Taras Usichenko, author of a study on the phenomenon, the trick causes a sudden, temporary rise in pressure in the chest and spinal canal, inhibiting the pain-conducting structures of the spinal cord.

Forget Sudafed. An easier, quicker, and cheaper way to relieve sinus pressure is by alternately thrusting your tongue against the roof of your mouth, then pressing between your eyebrows with one finger. This causes the vomer bone, which runs through the nasal passages to the mouth, to rock back and forth, says Lisa DeStefano, D.O., an assistant professor at the Michigan State University college of osteopathic medicine. The motion loosens congestion; after 20 seconds, you'll feel your sinuses start to drain.

When you were 9, playing your armpit was a cool trick. Now, as an adult, you can still appreciate a good body-based feat, but you're more discriminating. Take that tickle in your throat; it's not worth gagging over. Here's a better way to scratch your itch: "When the nerves in the ear are stimulated, it creates a reflex in the throat that can cause a muscle spasm," says Scott Schaffer, M.D., president of an ear, nose, and throat specialty center in Gibbsboro, New Jersey. "This spasm relieves the tickle."

2. Experience supersonic hearing!

If you're stuck chatting up a mumbler at a cocktail party, lean in with your right ear. It's better than your left at following the rapid rhythms of speech, according to researchers at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. If, on the other hand, you're trying to identify that song playing softly in the elevator, turn your left ear toward the sound. The left ear is better at picking up music tones.

Paulson was asking lawmakers to take unprecedented action, in the face of overwhelming public anger, in the midst of the most convoluted and sprawling financial crisis in modern history. They wanted to spend US$2,300 for every man, woman and child in America to buy assets that nobody else in the world wants, at prices nobody else will pay.

there was a decent chance that once confidence returned, many of those toxic mortgages might actually recover and most, if not all, of the government's US$700 billion would be recovered. Uncle Sam tried a similar trick with bad loans back in the Great Depression and wound up turning a small profit.

The trouble with that, as dozens of economists were quick to point out this week, is that the U.S. economy isn't suffering from a single tumour that can be isolated and removed.

If Niccolò Machiavelli were to envision an economic crisis that would cripple the Republicans prior to Election Day, he couldn't do much better than one precipitated by the banking industry.

The Republican Party, having inherited much of the pro-business sentiment of the Whig Party, has been pro-banking in spirit for 150 years. Your average voter might not know the historical reasons for why the GOP is a pro-banking party, but s/he understands that it is.

If this were an economic crisis precipitated by a massive labor union strike

the horse race numbers would be reversed right now.

this is a crisis precipitated by the banks. Combine that with the fact that George W. Bush is at the helm, and it's unsurprising that the public has assigned the blame to the GOP.

there is disaffection with George W. Bush and, by extension, the Republican Party. McCain's maverick label was his best hope for overcoming those sour feelings.

A Republican who runs against the banks might as well pee into the wind.

Then he was pictured at the wheel of a massive racing truck and shooting dead a tiger in the Siberian forest.

He has also appeared operating a train, sailing on a submarine and co-piloting a fighter jet.

Now Vladimir Putin - the world's most manly leader - has released yet another display of his own masculinity: a DVD entitled 'Let's learn judo with Vladimir Putin'.

Today he presented the instructional judo DVD that shows him throwing an opponent to the mat.

'Let's Learn Judo with Vladimir Putin' is the product of collaboration between Putin - a black belt - and former World and Olympic judo champion Yasuhiro Yamashita.

At a nighttime presentation minutes into his 56th birthday, Putin said the title was little more than an 'advertising trick'. Anyone who watches it 'will be learning not from your humble servant but from real geniuses' of the martial art, he said.

Putin is a one-time judo champion of his home city St. Petersburg

Bulkifying a Trigger (an example)

Back in June, I blogged about a trigger I made to auto-create a Campaign Member record for new Leads if the Lead Source value matched the Name of an existing Campaign. Steve Andersen rightfully commented on that post about the need to bulkify the trigger. I have been pretty slow in learning Apex and over the past week or so things have started clicking for me. I am now (finally) beginning to “get it”. With the help of Matt Kaufman and a friend at Salesforce, I have come to understand Apex a bit more and can much more easily apply it to my day to day Salesforce work.

Therefore, I thought I should correct the trigger I wrote and make it bulkified. This should serve as a good before and after example of a trigger that accomplishes the same thing, but is now bulkified.

Are you sure you really see it disappear?

If your eyes follow the movement of the rotating pink dot, the dots will remain only one colour - pink.
However if you stare at the black “+”
in the center, the moving dot turns to green.

Now, concentrate on the black “+” in the center of the picture.
After a short period, all the pink dots will slowly disappear, and you will only see only a single green dot rotating.

It's amazing how our brain works. There really is no green dot, and the pink ones really don't disappear.
Proof enough that we don't always see what we think we see...

Invisibility cloaks could take sting out of tsunamis

But Guenneau cautions that large structures like islands and coastlines are unlikely to become invisible anytime soon, because building the many small islands needed to protect one is such a big job.

"It's crazy – maybe only people in Dubai could do this," he adds, referring to the spectacular artificial islands built there.

Smaller structures such as offshore oil platforms would be easier to protect, he says.

Invisibility cloaks that are able to steer light around two dimensional objects have become reality in the last few years. But the first real-world application of the theories that made them possible could be in hiding vulnerable coastlines and offshore platforms from destructive tsunamis.

The first working invisibility cloak, built in 2006, guided microwaves around a small, flat copper ring as if it wasn't there.

By October 2007, a device repeated the trick for harder-to-handle visible light, and some progress is reported on the yet more complex task of making cloaks to hide 3D objects

Now Stefan Enoch at the Fresnel Institute in Marseille, France, says that established cloaking principles could be applied to ocean waves, which are essentially two-dimensional.

Such techniques could be used to render vulnerable coastlines or offshore platforms invisible to damaging waves, he says.

Real 3-D Cameras on the market soon

Camera makers are jumping into the 3-D photo market more than 20 years after the format was laughed out of town and ended up as Michael Jackson's sidekick in Captain Eo.

Recently, Fujifilm announced a two-lensed camera that takes images and movies in 3-D and captures wide-angle photos of single scenes simultaneously. As a result, we've heard some rumbling in the wires about other camera manufacturers coming out with their own version in the next year or so.

Since the lenses are 6-7 cm from each other (or about the same length between most people’s eyes), the Real 3-D's camera processes the images in real time to produce the stereoscopic 'trick' effect that makes them look as if they're floating in air. This is where the processing update of Fujitsu's 'Real Photo Processor 3-D' chip comes in.

The chip blends the dual images and all the important metrics (focus, zoom range and exposure) at once and pushes them out to the LCD, which is also on a 3-D display.

For a period, it was possible to view the McCain versus Obama election as a toss-up, but we have gone beyond that point. It is no longer a toss-up election.

And events that take place during the campaign should not be reported as if it was a toss-up.

Obama is decisively ahead.

His lead is clear, it is reflected in state races and it is consistent.

McCain's only hope is to shock the race somehow. He succeeded in doing it at the convention. He tried and failed during the bailout crisis.

But there aren't very many opportunities to repeat the trick and last night was one of those. It was a long shot, but still a shot.

So Sarah Palin needed to win last night. Of course Republicans feared disaster, but avoiding disaster wasn't enough. Avoiding disaster means the race goes on smoothly and serenely.

And if it does that, Obama wins.

So by not losing Biden won.
