Like Groening, I too used to spend hours drawing Peanuts cartoons because they "looked" easy. I loved Snoopy! I wanted a beagle before I knew that they were crazy dogs. I owned a Snoopy snowcone machine - which they re-released and I saw at Urban Outfitters. I had thing for Schroeder.

Oh boy, Charlie Brown

My grade-school buddies and I constantly attempted to draw our cartoon favourites, from Popeye to Batman, Sad Sack to Huckleberry Hound. We especially loved copying the Peanuts kids, because they seemed simple enough at first glance. But those giant heads and dots for eyes were trickier than they looked. Our Charlie Browns weren't sweet and impassive. In our wobbly hands, Charlie Brown's big, round head turned into a macrocephalic oval, his eye dots drifted apart, and his body got fatter and more squished. No matter how much we practised, our Charlie Browns looked like freaks.

Since Lucy and myself are both erstwhile Cubs fans (both of us having lived at one time or another in the balmy weather of Chi-Town), I wanted to mourn the demise of YET ANOTHER season of hopes dashed. 1908 and counting … now that’s a curse.

Navy résumé doesn't quite hold water

When Vice Adm. Donald Arthur retired as Navy surgeon general, Adm. Mike Mullen—now chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff—paid tribute to a "Renaissance man."

"His résumé says a lot," Mullen said. "BA, MA, JD, PhD and of course MD. He's got more degrees than a thermometer."

It was a stirring testimonial, but not entirely accurate. While Arthur's bachelor's and MD were legitimate, he has no master's. The PhD came from a university whose accreditation the federal government doesn't recognize. And the JD, or law degree, was granted by a diploma mill that collapsed after its president was imprisoned for fraud.

Within a 14-month period in 1992-93, Arthur obtained a PhD in health-care management from what is now American Century University in New Mexico and a JD from LaSalle University, according to his Navy record.

year ago in a traffic accident. A Japanese journalist asked him about the tribute and received as elegant, human and
charming an answer as you could hope for. Vale explained how when he first came to the 125s there was a gang of fast
Japanese riders who he liked and was great friends with, and how he was so happy to see them this weekend - Ueda,
Tokodume, Sakata and 'my teacher' Haruchika Aoki. But it was the Japanese GP of 1995 that made the young Rossi a
Norrick fan - he nearly wore out the video of that race. With typical attention to detail Vale's helmet sticker
showed a red bike with the green numbers - that was the Honda that Abe rode in that famous wild-card race , not the
Yamaha of his fulltime GP career.

All students sat the exam earlier this summer and the results, issued this month, show that out of 15756 candidates, Kensington and Chelsea College students achieved 6 out of the 10 highest overall marks awarded by Edexcel for GCSE Italian.

At the dawning of one of the worst financial crises in this country’s history, as we stood at the precipice of despair, Sen. John McCain shrugged and said, “The fundamentals of our economy are strong.”

I don’t know which was scarier: watching the panic in Greenspan’s eyes over the collapse of investment banks or the vacancy sign in McCain’s eyes as he channeled Herbert Hoover.

You will recall that former President Hoover, an economic wunderkind like McCain, claimed in 1929, after bank failures and job layoffs, that “the fundamental business of the country, that is the production and distribution of commodities, is on a sound and prosperous basis.”

Hoover, who defeated Democrat Al Smith, then ushered in the Great Depression.

McCain is a tribute to his party, notorious for letting the Fat Cats get their deregulated fill at the expense of average working-class Americans, who are left with nothing but pocket change to show for their partisanship.

Prof Stephen Hawking is to unveil a remarkable £500,000 clock with no hands that pays tribute to the world's greatest clockmaker.

The Corpus Clock will be unveiled by Prof Stephen Hawking

One clock made by the legendary John Harrison, the pioneer of longitude, took 36 years to build and he was still calibrating it when he died at his home in London on March 24, 1776, his 83rd birthday.

The Corpus Clock has been invented and designed by Dr John Taylor for Corpus Christi College Cambridge for the exterior of the college's new library building.

Dr Taylor, an inventor and horologist who studied at the College in the 1950s has put £500,000 of his own money and seven years into the project.

"One of my heroes is John Harrison," he says.

The Corpus Clock, which is wound up by an electric motor, has no hands. "It is a new way to show time, with light," said Dr Taylor.
