Todd Palin Digs into Job Creation for Alaskans

The companies that paid for the flights, a normal means of travel to remote and often roadless parts of Alaska, are both in the early stages of a lengthy approval process.

A month after the first visit, Todd Palin toured the Red Dog Mine, a lead and zinc operation in the northwestern part of the state.

That company is currently seeking permission to mine a new deposit, which would extend the life of the mine to 2031.

On two separate occasions last fall, the husband of the Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin boarded planes chartered by mining companies that want to dig for gold, zinc and lead in remote Alaska valleys.

Palin, a member of the United Steelworkers Local 4959, himself learned on the job. He began working in oil fields on Alaska's North Slope for BP Exploration Alaska in 1989, a year after he eloped with his high school sweetheart.

He took a leave from his position as a production operator at a Prudhoe Bay facility where oil is separated from water and natural gases when his wife became governor but returned six months later.

Todd Palin joined with state officials on the two mining trips, and the costs of his travel were disclosed by his wife as gifts in compliance with state ethics laws. The excursions coincide with a mini metals boom in Alaska fueled by high prices. Two new mines are scheduled to open in coming weeks and months, and four more are on the drawing board

Shark Diving Unlimited has had a fantastic start to 2008 with a record number of sharks being sighted for this time of year! However the water temperatures have been unusually low (7°C) and only the bravest divers stayed in the cage for a long time! But their tenacity was rewarded with some really breath taking encounters!

While social media deserves all the credit it receives, the concept of social creative deserves equal attention. I define social creative as creative that a) is portable -- meaning it can travel across destinations and platforms, b) is shareable, c) is either dynamically or manually customizable and d) spawns additional creative created by the very people that interact with it. The era of the promotional microsite is drawing to a close. That doesn't mean the widget is the end-all be-all future, but it might more closely resemble what the future has in store than bloated, over-complicated, inefficiently built, processor-heavy websites.

The Department of Homeland Security should not use the user-generated Wikipedia to decide whether an asylum seeker can enter the United States, a federal appeals court ruled Friday.

That judicial statement of the obvious (.pdf) from the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a ruling by the Board of Immigration Appeals, which said DHS committed no big foul in using a site editable by anyone with a computer to decide the fate of a woman named Lamilem Badasa.

DHS decided to deport Badasa after consulting Wikipedia to decide whether a Ethiopian travel document known as a laissez-passer was adequate to prove her identity.

Using the Wikipedia page as evidence, the government convinced an immigration judge that the document did not prove her identity, calling it a one-way travel document based on information provided by the applicant.
