clipper's remarks: This morning, Republicans tell me that a worker at Invesco Field in Denver saved thousands of unused flags from the Democratic National Convention that were headed for the garbage. Guerrilla campaigning. They will use these flags at their own event today in Colorado Springs with John McCain and Sarah Palin.

UPDATE I: I just spoke with the person at Invesco who found the flags and he thinks both sides are exaggerating a bit. The person claims the majority of the bags with flags in them were near the trash, on a dock, and would have been thrown away. The person thinks it was probably an “oversight” by the Democrats rather than any nefarious plot against the flag. But the person doesn’t believe anyone was coming to get them: “The flags were there for a week and a day and no one came looking for them.”

Thousands of flags from Obama's r~~evival meeting~~ ~~coronation~~ acceptance speech were destined to for recycling (or worse) before a worker at Invesco Field rescued them from the trash heap.

Doing such actions to the symbol of this country is worse than burning it in protest. Casually discarding ia flag like a used Kleenex belies a offhand indifference to what the flag stands for that is stunning to comprehend, and goes far beyond buring a flag as a protest. At least when you burn the flag, it's for a reason, and while I myself will never, ever burn a flag for any reason, if you decide it's a reasonable way to demonstrate for your cause, do so. But don't try to dodge what comes next, when others will get upset that you're burning something for which people have literally died for. Civil disobedience that breaks no laws is not civil disobedience.

(Last night, during his primetime speech from the podium at the Republican National Convention, Senator Joe Lieberman made the following statement: "... if John McCain is just another partisan Republican, then I'm Michael Moore's favorite Democrat. And I'm not. And I think you know that I'm not.")

Dear Joe:

John McCain IS just another partisan Republican -- so that must mean you ARE my favorite Democrat!

But how can you be my favorite Democrat when you are no longer a Democrat? This is very confusing. I was in the middle of taking out the garbage and, all of a sudden, there you were, trash-talking me in front of thousands of cheering (mostly) white people on TV.

I flashed them the "Big L" loser sign and, well, nine of New York's finest had to help me get out of there alive.

Palin Slashed Funding for Teen Moms

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin wrote in her line-item veto changes by hand in this copy of a 2008 spending bill obtained by The Washington Post.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee who revealed Monday that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, earlier this year used her line-item veto to slash funding for a state program benefiting teen mothers in need of a place to live.

According to Passage House's web site, its purpose is to provide "young mothers a place to live with their babies for up to eighteen months while they gain the necessary skills and resources to change their lives" and help teen moms "become productive, successful, independent adults who create and provide a stable environment for themselves and their families."

Palin's own daughter, Bristol, is five months pregnant and has plans to wed.

Renamed Chilean sea bass, it sold so fast that it nearly disappeared from the sea.

Expectations are everything. In one recent test, psychologists asked 32 volunteers to sample strawberry yogurt. To make sure the testers made their judgments purely on the basis of taste, the researchers said, they needed to turn out the lights. Then they gave their subjects chocolate yogurt. Nineteen of the 32 praised the strawberry flavor. One said that strawberry was her favorite flavor and she planned to switch to this new brand.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — A protest near the site of the Republican National Convention gave way to violence Monday as demonstrators attacked members of the Connecticut delegation, smashed windows, slashed car tires and threw bottles during an anti-war march, St. Paul police said.

Five people were accused of setting fire to a trash bin and pushing it into a police car, St. Paul police spokesman Tom Walsh said.

The violent demonstrators were mostly dressed in black and described themselves as anarchists. Most of the violence occurred in pockets of a neighborhood near downtown, several blocks from the Xcel Energy Center, where the convention was taking place. At the request of police, 150 Minnesota National Guard soldiers helped control splinter groups near downtown long after anti-war marchers had dispersed.

I use a combination of heat guns, soldering irons and different cutting utensils to make these PETs. I wanted to work with glass but this is more fun. I have as much material as I want just by fishing in the garbage.

Poisoning the poor – Electronic Waste in Ghana

Ghana — The latest place where we have discovered high tech toxic trash causing horrendous pollution is in Ghana. Our analysis of samples taken from two electronic waste (e-waste) scrap yards in Ghana has revealed severe contamination with hazardous chemicals.

The ever-growing demand for the latest fashionable mobile phone, flat screen TV or super-fast computer creates ever larger amounts of obsolete electronics that are often laden with toxic chemicals like lead, mercury and brominated flame retardants. Rather than being safely recycled, much of this e-waste gets dumped in developing countries. Previously, we have exposed pollution from e-waste scrap yards in China and India. Nigeria has also been identified as a dumping ground for old electronics.

I don’t think anything like this exists yet, so if you’re looking for an idea for a website/service, I’ve got one for you:

Random Acts of Kindness: A Social Site to Create Happiness

This site would be a way to do nice things for other people, and get rewarded for it.

So what’s the point of such a site? It promotes kindness to strangers. It makes you feel good to do something nice for someone else, and thus makes you a little happier. It helps you to remember to be grateful. It’s certainly a lot better than some social sites where people trash each other all the live-long day.

I don’t know if anyone will ever create such a site, but I’d love to see it. How about you?

Next time you find yourself somewhere with lots of tourists, try to guess where they're from based only on their behavior (no eavesdropping). The woman carrying her empty soda bottle for blocks and blocks, rejecting trash cans that are close to overflowing, until she finds one where the bottle won't fall out? Probably one of those superconscientious Swiss. That group flocking to name-brand retailers? Conformist Japanese, perhaps. That man armed with a map and checking off items on his to-see list? A disciplined, goal-oriented German. For the bonus round: if you peg someone as American, which state? Hint: Wisconsin has very extroverted residents, finds an upcoming study, while West Virginians and Rhode Islanders rank highest on neuroticism.

Linking personality to where someone hails from is more than a game, however.

Hoarding can manifest itself in the excessive collection of household trash, newspapers, magazines, clothing, and even animals. In some instances, not only have reams of useless items been accumulated, but also an entire household may be brimming with items from floor to ceiling. All available living space, including every surface, countertops, chairs, sofas, bathtubs, sinks, coffee tables, desks, and beds, may become jam-packed with broken televisions, radios, boxes, containers, bottles, magazines, newspapers, bills, photos, expired coupons, food, and old clothes, leaving barely enough room to maneuver throughout the home.

The mental health community attributes hoarding behavior to a variety of both physical and psychological factors.

It may be considered a mechanism for coping; a symptom of depression, anxiety, or substance abuse; a result of cognitive impairment; an obsessive–compulsive disorder; or a number of other possible conditions.
