Here again, there’s marked difference between 1993 and 2009. Then, some of our highways, bridges, levees and transit systems needed repair. Today, they are crumbling. In 1993, some of our children were in classrooms too crowded to learn in, and some districts were shutting preschool and after-school programs. Today, such inadequacies are endemic. In 1993, some 35 million Americans had no health insurance and millions more were barely able to afford it. Today, 50 million are without insurance, and a large swath of the middle class is barely holding on. In 1993, climate change was a problem. Now, it’s an emergency.

The top 1 percent now takes home about 20 percent of total national income. As recently as 1980, it took home 8 percent. Although the economy has grown considerably since 1980, the middle class’s share has shrunk

The last time the top 1 percent took home 20 percent of national income, not incidentally, was 1928.

I have the previous version of this bike, and it is terrific. As a single speed bike, it’s relatively slow, but it folds so quickly that combined with a good public transit system you can have an amazingly quick commute. You also get a ton of comments and questions from people on the street, even without the extremely tight pants featured above.

Front brakes are responsible for most of the major stopping power. Given the choice I’d go for that one, but the front and the back are required in different proportions under varying conditions. The learning of how much pressure to apply to each at any given time is an art, Just when you think you have it down, you learn that you don’t. Riding is an ongoing education, but a rewarding one.

I like the bike.

D-Day for RFID-based transit card systems

Want to ride the subway for free without having to jump the turnstiles? Well, as of Monday, you'll be able to do that by making a fake transit card.

A scientific paper detailing the security flaws in the Mifare Classic wireless smart card chip used in transit systems around the world is being published by the Radboud University Nijmegen. And a researcher at Humboldt University in Berlin has published a full implementation of the algorithm (PDF).

"Combining these two pieces of information, attacks can now be implemented by anyone," RFID researcher Karsten Nohl told CNET News. "All it takes is a $100 (card) reader and a little software."

Armed with the information in the papers, someone could steal the secret key from a Mifare Classic-based transit card and create a clone of it. As seen in a demonstration, data was collected wirelessly by merely brushing a card reader past someone carrying a card.

There seems to be a burgeoning interest in folding bicycles.

At least in the U.S., folding bikes are purchased mainly for ease of carriage on public transportation (trains, ferries, planes), and private transportation (cars, RVs, small planes, and boats). Even public transit that permits bicycles often limits the number of bicycles and the hours that they are allowed.

The ideal folder has yet to be built. The Montague and Slingshot are excellent bicycles, but they don't fold small enough due to their large wheels. The bike friday suffers from the small wheel size which contributes to a harsher ride plus wheel heating problems reported by owners (though no Moulton owners report similar wheel problems so it may be strictly a bike friday issue). The Birdy, Brompton and the small DaHons lack a wide enough gear range for use in hilly areas (like San Francisco), though it is possible to modify them to provide adequate gearing.

Again, there are many great folding bicycles on the market today, another sign that the bicycle industry is moving to better serve the commuter market. Great folders include the Breezer Zigzag, the Brompton, and the KHS Mocha/Latte. If you are a multimodal bicycle commuter fearful of rapid crowding on transit systems, or live in a small apartment, or lack secure bike parking and need to bring your bike into your office/workplace--you might want to consider a folding bike.

Of all the folding bikes available, what was appealing about this bike? First, the Giant Halfway is relatively affordable, sold at an attractive price point.

Second, it is relatively quick to fold. Many folders, such as some models of the Bike Friday line--are really travel bikes--offering great ride quality but requiring more time to collapse; suitable for a trip to Europe or elsewhere, but maybe not the best option for quick folding as you rush to your bus or train.

It is also very smartly designed. The geometry is great; meaning the ride quality doesn't feel cramped, "squirrelly," or uncomfortable. The single front fork (above) facilitates quick folding, and also easy repairs of flats. You don't need to remove the entire wheel, just the inntertube.

also offers great features, such as fenders, kickstand, and a rear rack. The designers even created a special mount (above) for the fenders and kickstand, showing the Halfway's intended purpose as a practical commuter.

Last March, in New York, in a speech notable for its depth, balance, and foresight, he said, “A complete disdain for pay-as-you-go budgeting, coupled with a generally scornful attitude towards oversight and enforcement, allowed far too many to put short-term gain ahead of long-term consequences.”

He has called for greater and more programmatic regulation of the financial system; the creation of a National Infrastructure Reinvestment Bank, which would help reverse the decay of our roads, bridges, and mass-transit systems, and create millions of jobs; and a major investment in the green-energy sector.

He supports a cap-and-trade program to reduce America’s carbon emissions

He also wants to raise federal fuel-economy standards and to require that ten per cent of America’s electricity be generated from renewable sources by 2012

After more than three decades of being told we can’t afford to keep a modest safety net beneath the people on Main Street, we have thrown the mother of all lifelines to Wall Street.

We’ve been lectured incessantly about costly “entitlements” such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid that are supposedly wrecking the federal balance sheet and endangering our collective financial future.

If we can socialize the banking industry, why can’t we socialize the health insurance industry?

We allow families to be bankrupted by illness, but we won’t allow financial giants to be bankrupted by greed and incompetence

What’s the greenest American city? According to the latest annual report from SustainLane, it’s Portland, Ore.

To live in the greenest cities, the Wall Street Journal’s environmental blogger writes, “you better have plenty of greenbacks.”

The bottom line: The kind of things that make cities “sustainable” also make them expensive. Take the rankings of “housing affordability.” The cheapest cities—San Antonio, Fort Worth, Arlington, El Paso—also scored the worst on public transit, bike-friendliness, and ability to walk to work. The big winners there are also among the most expensive places to live, like San Francisco, New York, San Jose, and Boston.

The 7 July 2005 London bombings (also called the 7/7 bombings) were a series of coordinated bomb blasts that hit London's public transport system during the morning rush hour. Carried out by British Islamist extremists, the suicide bombings were motivated by Britain's involvement in the Iraq War and other conflicts.^[1] At 8:50 a.m., three bombs exploded within fifty seconds of each other on three London Underground trains. A fourth bomb exploded on a bus nearly an hour later at 9:47 a.m. in Tavistock Square. The bombings killed 52 commuters and the four suicide bombers, injured 700, and caused disruption of the city's transport system (severely for the first day) and the country's mobile telecommunications infrastructure. The series of suicide-bomb explosions constituted the largest and deadliest terrorist attack on London's transit system in its history.
