Never before have gay story lines been so prominent. Nor have there ever been so many gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender characters on television — 83 by a recent count from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, not counting reality shows, daytime dramas or gay-oriented cable networks.

Yet for most gay actors, Hollywood is not a warm and fuzzy episode of “Will & Grace.” Today, it is certainly more acceptable to be openly gay. But these actors must still answer wrenching questions: Just how candid do you want to be? Would you be happy appearing only in comedies, or being pigeonholed as a character actor? And what does the line “You’re just not right for the role” really mean?

Oy! The BIID Community - Must I Point This Out to You?

So, I’ve received emails and comments from people in the BIID community defending themselves. That’s fine. Seriously, I expected this to happen. What I didn’t expect was the following things:

1. Nearly every person in the BIID community that has contacted me has resorted to name calling and trying to anger me by saying things to try and hurt me

2. The BIID community keeps saying that I’m trying to present my view as fact

First, let me say that I don’t really care what any of you think. I know who I am and I am happy. Calling me “Dominica” and “she” and “bitch” just makes me laugh. Why would I really care what you think of me? I don’t even know you people. Sticks and stones and all. Furthermore, using that as your argument really shows that you have no other way of defending yourself. You try to point out others shortcomings or what you deem as shortcomings to try and win an argument. All that does is make you look bad.

When Christine Smith told her colleagues at work that she was gay she thought they would be sympathetic. Her friends had been supportive; her family had not batted an eyelid. Her job as an office assistant at a publishing firm was going well. She was enjoying it and her line manager was happy with her work.

Within a week everything changed. "I got called in by my manager. She said, 'We have grave concerns over the lifestyle choice you have taken. We do not think it fits the company ethos.' She gave me a cheque for a month's salary and I was escorted off the premises. It was awful."

SACRAMENTO - August 5 - The full Legislature has approved a bill that would establish May 22 as Harvey Milk Day in California, honoring the late civil rights pioneer with a day of special significance. On Tuesday, the Senate approved Assembly Bill 2567 with a 22-13 vote. The measure passed the Assembly last month, and will now go to the governor’s desk for signature.

AB 2567, authored by Assemblymember Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, and sponsored by Equality California, creates a day of special significance commemorating Milk’s birthday. If the governor signs the measure, California would become the first state in the nation to designate a day honoring a leader of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. The bill first returns to the Assembly for a concurrence vote before going to the governor for his signature.

Michael Causer, 18, from Whiston, Merseyside, was attacked in Tarbock Road, Huyton, on 25 July.

He was treated for serious head injuries at the Walton Critical Care unit but died on Saturday.

Last night, WREG-TV in Memphis reported that the man who was charged with the February 16, 2006, murder of Tiffany Berry, has now been arraigned on a second murder charge. On Thursday, authorities in Shelby County charged DeAndre Blake with the murder of his own two year old daughter.

At the time of this second murder, Blake was walking the streets of Memphis as a free man on a $20,000 bond. According to Berry's family, Blake admitted he had killed Berry because he did not like the way she had "touched" him.

In Bankok, Thailand there are seperate bathrooms for teen boys who prefer to dress as girls at one rural high school. No more tough decisions about which toilet to take to or having to go to the teachers lounge.

A 1,500-student technical college in the northern province of Chiang Mai set up a “Pink Lotus Bathroom” for its 15 transvestite students in 2003. Deputy Education Minister Boonlue Prasertsopar recently said the ministry plans to count the number of transgender university students.

'Transsexuality gene' makes women feel like men

A gene variant has been identified that appears to be associated with female-to-male transsexuality – the feeling some women have that they belong to the opposite sex.

While such complex behaviour is likely the result of multiple genes, environmental and cultural factors, the researchers say the discovery suggests that transsexuality does have a genetic component.

The variation is in the gene for an enzyme called cytochrome P17, which is involved in the metabolism of sex hormones.

Its presence leads to higher than average tissue concentrations of male and female sex hormones, which may in turn influence early brain development.

However, Janett Scott, former president of the Beaumont Society, a UK support group for transgender people, is concerned that positing a biological basis for transsexuality may encourage people to try and cure it
