Back From The Dead: Man Attends Own Funeral

A bricklayer who was thought to have been killed in a car crash shocked his grieving family by showing up alive at his own funeral. Skip related content

Relatives of Brazilian Ademir Jorge Goncalves, 59, had identified him as the victim of a Sunday night car crash in the southern state of Parana, police said.

As is customary there, the funeral was held the following day, which happened to be the holiday of Finados, when Brazilians visit cemeteries to honour the dead.

What family members did not know was that Mr Goncalves had spent the night at a lorry park talking to friends over drinks of a sugarcane liquor known as cachaca, his niece Rosa Sampaio revealed later.

He did not get word about his own funeral until it was already happening Monday morning.

The bricklayer then rushed to the funeral to let family members know he was not dead, a police spokesman in the town of Santo Antonio da Platina said.

Kilo of metal found in Peruvian's stomach: surgeon

Doctors in northern Peru have removed almost a kilogram of nails, coins and scrap metal from a man's stomach, a surgeon that operated on him said Wednesday. Skip related content

"The patient came in with severe abdominal pains. After examinations we discovered that he had hundreds of nails in his stomach," Carlos Delgado, a surgeon at the hospital in the town of Cajamarca, told AFP.

Requelme Abanto Alvarado was admitted to the hospital on Friday. After a two-hour operation doctors removed 900 grams (two pounds) of nails, coins and scrap metal from his stomach, as well as a small knife.

"I have never had a case like this," the surgeon said. "I have operated on plenty of patients, but so many things in a stomach, it's really extraordinary."

Alvarado was in a stable condition following the operation, Delgado said, adding that he was now being examined by mental health specialists.

Imagine a community so deep in the hole, the government has fired the police force and closed two of three elementary schools. It's happened in Pembroke, a little town of some 3,000 in eastern Kankakee County near the Indiana border.

It's a town where these days, many folks don't rebuild after a fire. The charred remains just sit there.

Payton says the unemployment rate is 46 percent and the median income is just half the statewide figure. Payton says his goal right now is to create jobs in a place where businesses don't seem to want to come, and the young people mostly want to leave.

In a win for the little guy, the small Victorian town of Romsey has a won a fight against the introduction of 30 poker machines in the town's only pub.

After a marathon five-year battle, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal today ruled against the introduction of the machines.

"On balance, I have concluded the social impact of gaming machines at the hotel on the well-being of the community will be strongly negative," Tribunal president Justice Kevin Bell said.

Surveys had indicated up to 80 per cent of the town's population opposed the introduction of the machines at the hotel.

Macedon Ranges shire mayor John Letchford was ecstatic after the decision and said the shire would help other communities fighting against the introduction of poker machines.

"We feel vindicated in our stance with this long-going gaming machine issue and certainly the community has been heard," he said.

"It gives great substance and credibility to local government to be able to take up this particular fight

The state's thinking in its Ocean Management Plan, mandated by the Ocean Act of 2008, appears to run contrary to the prowind and renewable energy policy of Governor Deval Patrick's administration, when Mass Audubon surveys have revealed similar numbers of winter sea ducks near Martha's Vineyard where its bird counters have not been as forthcoming with their data as Nantucket. As a result, the state delineated two sites south of that island where up to 166 wind turbines could be built per site. Not that Nantucket wants such a large project off its shores, but Vorce said the town should have the ability to at least build the smaller community wind farm.

Brazil seeks cause of massive blackout

SAO PAULO (AFP) – Brazil on Wednesday sought to uncover the cause of a massive and mysterious blackout overnight, amid concerns of energy supply stability for the 2016 Olympic host nation.

The outage, which hit at 10:15 pm Tuesday (0015 GMT Wednesday) and lasted four to six hours, plunged nearly half the country into darkness.

Off-duty police were called up as thousands were trapped in immobile elevators and subway trains. Cars were forced to nose through intersections made dangerous by suddenly extinguished traffic lights. Some cafes closed out of fear of a nocturnal crime wave.
