The brief Post piece, “Contracts Went to Longtime Donor,” mentions that the firm won contracts totaling nearly $650,000 from the University of Chicago Medical Center. It happened because of a minority-owned business outreach program started by the newly promoted Michelle Obama. The elder Blackwell says that without that program, “[t]hey might not have ever thought to include Blackwell Consulting.” It also didn’t hurt that the younger Blackwell had been underwriting Obama’s political and personal life.

In early 2003, after one of the Killerspin ping-pong tournaments he had helped taxpayers subsidize, Obama was interviewed by the Chicago Sun-Times on the subject of the younger Blackwell’s entrepreneurship. “I would never bet against Robert on one of his ideas,” Obama said. “He’s extremely good at coming up with moneymaking ideas and implementing

Clip Source: article.nationalreview.com

Obama was short of work and short of cash, but Robert Blackwell Jr. came to his rescue. EKI hired him in March 2001 and paid him $8,000 per month in legal retainers, for a total of $112,000. Obama and his staff then helped Blackwell’s other company, a ping-pong apparel company called Killerspin, get $320,000 in state grants. It began in 2002, months after Obama had received his last legal payment from Blackwell. Obama wrote a letter requesting a $50,000 tourism grant for Killerspin for its annual promotional ping-pong tournament.

The Times reported that Obama, in his required legal financial disclosures for 2001 and 2002, buried this six-figure financial conflict of interest with respect to Blackwell’s companies amid a list of hundreds of other clients represented by his entire law firm. He did not mention in his ethics paperwork that EKI was his largest source of income in 2001 — nor was he required to. Illinois’s legislative ethics laws are extremely weak.

<clipSource>http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=NmI0NmM2NWZmMmUyNjQ2ODJhYWRjMTJiNWY4YmYyYmI=&w=MQ==</clipSource>

"New-Old" - Ohio to be Home of Country's Longest Covered Bridge

clipped by: presohio

Clip Source: blog.cleveland.com

Ashtabula County covered bridge will be nation's longest

This is big news, folks. (Take that, New Hampshire and Vermont.) The intricate wooden span stretches 613 feet, like a lumber yard pieced together above the flowing floor of the Ashtabula River valley.

Workers spent two years prepping the site and connecting beefy boards of Southern yellow pine to replace a deteriorated steel bridge along State Road. Parking areas are planned near both ends of the structure.

Tags: heritage tourism, ashtabula county

<clipSource>http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/08/ashtabula_county_covered_bridg.html</clipSource>

Mindblowing 3D photo viewer

clipped by: milmufmas

Clip Source: www.istartedsomething.com

If you think you’ve seen what’s possible with Photosynth, then you’ve seen nothing yet. The collaborative research team from the University of Washington and Microsoft Research who only two years ago in 2006 published their paper “Photo Tourism” and their technology demonstration “Photosynth” have again pushed the boundaries of what can be achieved by intuitively processing the abundance of digital images shared on the web.

This week at SIGGRAPH 2008 they’re sharing with the world some even better technology they’ve been working on which they call “Finding Paths through the World’s Photos“.

This technology is much better than Photosynth simply because instead of just presenting individual photographs in a cool 3D environment, it actually manipulates the photo to give you a seamless and more lifelike experience.
