This video was filmed in the Release Candidate viewer, which is why it looks blue (instead of gray like the main viewer), but liabilities work the same in both… and now for the show!

Second Life Video Tutorials now shine with a revamped style which looks official (heck, it is!) and delights you with animated whimsy. Pastrami Linden & I, with support from Bub and Cornelius Linden, worked intensely on it this week. We doth hope you enjoy.

Today, I have the honor and privilege of explaining why it’s important to check your groups to see if you’re being charged small amounts of L$ each week for listing group-owned parcels in Search. I love followup. As Resident Enlightenment Manager, one of my prime responsibilities is to share useful + fun (usefun!) info that helps solve your problems and makes your Second Life® smoother… and overall moar awesome.

Recently, I conducted a Q&A session where I had an opportunity to directly answer many of your questions — the best part of this may’ve been that a number of enthusiastic Second Lifers were ALL TOO HAPPY to share their expertise.

I openly wondered how to play your own radio station inworld without doing a live stream, and topmate suggested MediaMaster. Thanx to that suggestion, I was able to spread the info forward, and since I’ve been asked it an awful lot over the ages, it deserves its own blog post.

NU: One alternate answer I can give that would make it a bit more legit and business-oriented is that as I moved up the ladder and it became more of a seniority thing, I got pulled into a lot of meetings during the day, and I never got to spend time focused and concentrating on making music. So being grabbed in different directions and not being able to spend time within the company to make the music, I lost the concentration. My decision was "do I want to stay at a company that's going to require a lot of non-creative time" or "do I want to continue to make music?" So continuing to make music was what I wanted to do and what I decided to do.

Jacek’s Guide to Aspect Ratios

This should help anyone who wants to make images to be displayed in the SL (classifieds, picks, etc.) and not have them be horribly stretched or squashed by Linden Lab’s inconsistent use of image aspect ratios. I don’t bother to cover aspect ratios for textures to be used on prims, as the proper aspect ratio in that case depends entirely on the prim’s dimensions.

Jaron's World: Morphing Messages

Someday soon we may be able to morph our virtual selves to describe ideas so subtle they are literally beyond words.

This may sound wildly speculative, but yes, I really was serious. In fact, I believe we are seeing early signs of the cephalopodization of our species right now. One arena in which the transformation is beginning is in massive online virtual worlds. Second Life is probably the best example. I serve as a technical advisor to Linden Lab, the company that administers Second Life, but really, most of what I have done is watch in delight and amazement as thousands of creative individuals have signed up, logged in, and built an entire virtual planet.

If you are a SL resident as well as being an active clipper, make a search in "groups" and join. clipper's remarks: I like job titles that make you do a double-take. I recently spotted this in the Beeb online. These types of articles are becoming more common; I can't imagine it's too long before the novelty wears off and they become ubiquitously meshed yet valuable, like what Steve Jobs thinks of Levi jeans.

From an insider perspective (I work for Linden Lab), I should note how dapper Roo aka Algernon looks, and how unique his head is shaped: you'll often not find prominent eyebrows like that in Second Life, especially paired with big blue eyes and a teardrop-shaped head not unlike that of a classic Gray alien. Lots of room for avatar customization, that's for sure.

Just another day in the office

"Metaverse Evangelist" is not a title you expect to see on a business card, let alone one from an employee of a century-old technology company.

But then Roo Reynolds of IBM is not a normal employee.

Living a double life, one as a twenty-something software engineer and the other as an online four-foot alien, Mr Reynolds flits between dusty wood-panelled meeting rooms and anything-goes virtual worlds like Second Life and Entropia Universe.

His job since March 2006 has been to preach the gospel of the online 3D universe to IBM executives and the company's clients.
