Grilled Spicy Shrimp

Light the Olympic Torch Shrimp

1 lb uncooked, peeled and deveined shrimp
1 large clove of garlic, minced*
1 TBSP chili garlic paste (or much, much less if you don't like heat)
1 TBSP sweet chili sauce

1 TBSP olive oil

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and marinate for 10 minutes. Thread on to skewers and grill over med-high heat until shrimp is opaque--this may take only take 5-7 minutes maximum depending on how big your shrimp are. Mine were relatively small and took less time.

*I just wanted to offer up my favorite way of mincing garlic. I haven't actually chopped a clove or used a garlic press in probably ten years because I love how finely it can be grated on my microplane grater. This way you get all the great flavor of garlic without any chunks because it practically melts into the dish and you're not stuck with a single-use kitchen gadget!

The advertising world has long had an ambivalent relationship with Olympic athletes; though coverage is saturated during the Games, interest in the quadrennial competition fades once its torch is extinguished.

So despite endless exposure, athletic dominance and a boy-next-door likability, one of the best athletes the U.S. has ever produced might be a ho-hum story when he climbs out of the pool.

In a pre-endorsement age, Hollywood would scour the Olympics for athletes and slot them into movies, as they did with Norwegian figure skater Sonja Henie and U.S. swimmers Buster Crabbe and Johnny Weissmuller.

"Once upon a time studios would find these beautiful creatures and put them in movies," Hollywood publicity guru Tony Angellotti said. "And if someone isn't that facile with the English language, like Weissmuller, well, you just make him Tarzan."

Tribes express concern about firefighting in sacred places

Indian tribes from the Klamath River canyon are worried that the U.S. Forest Service is violating some of their sacred lands by fighting a remote wilderness wildfire rather than letting it burn naturally.

The area is home to many prayer seats or vision-quest sites shared by three tribes, where tribal members have fasted, prayed and sought spiritual guidance for thousands of years. The area is also used to gather grasses for baskets and Port Orford cedar for ceremonial buildings, such as sweat lodges.

"Talking with Forest Service firefighters, I have been saying this is the Sistine Chapel, the Mount Sinai, the Vatican," for the Yurok, Karuk and Tolowa tribes, Chris Peters, the Yurok tribe's liaison with the Forest Service, said from Arcata, Calif.

"If fire should move in naturally, we're comfortable with that," Peters said. "But if you bring a drip torch into the Vatican and intend to ignite it, you are going to have some opposition."

Turns out that Bill Gates was not the only famous Microsoft identity to be spotted at the Olympic opening ceremony.

Numerous bloggers also observed the cameo played by the so-called Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) - the Windows error screen that flashes up on your computer, signifying that it's time to reboot.

The screen was projected onto the roof of the National Stadium during the grand finale to the four-hour spectacular as veteran Chinese gymnast Li Ning, suspended 70 metres above the stadium floor, "jogged" towards the Olympic torch.

The BSoD message begins with the following sentence: "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer."

Usually, the only way to remove the BSoD is to restart your computer pressing the Ctrl+Alt+Delete buttons at the same time.

International Views on the Olympics

The survey finds that international opinion largely approves of holding the upcoming 2008 Summer Olympics in China. Majorities in 14 of 23 countries say the decision to hold the games there was a good one.

However, European publics are notably less enthusiastic. In France, home to large demonstrations when the Olympic torch passed through the country, a clear 55%-majority calls the decision to hold the games in China a mistake. On balance, the British and Spanish approve of holding the event in China, while Germans, Americans and Poles are more divided on this question. And, unlike in other Asian nations, opposition to the Beijing Games runs high in Japan -- 55% of Japanese disapprove of the decision to hold the Olympics there, while just 39% approve.

The following sections describe other findings from the 2008 Pew Global Attitudes survey on how nations around the world view China, its policies and its people.

Well this is just perfect. At the exact moment Li Ning was rounding the lip of the Bird's Nest during the amazing torch-lighting climax, someone snapped this photo of our good friend the BSOD nestled amongst the Nest's steel twigs. Perhaps an Opening Cermonies IT dude spit out his coffee on the machines in the server room when Li took to the sky? Another question is what a projection screen is doing inside the Nest at that location, but I think the better question is what wasn't going on inside the Nest's roof—did you see that thing during the ceremonies? Lights! Fireworks! LED screens! Everything! Anyway, if only one image of this perfectness existed we'd be skeptical, but thankfully, someone has grabbed more from a different angle that pretty much seal the deal.

(CNN) -- Police in Toronto, Canada, asked thousands of people to evacuate their homes Sunday after early morning explosions at a propane company sent balls of flames into nearby neighborhoods.

There were reports of minor injuries but no fatalities caused by the explosions at Sunshine Propane in north Toronto, authorities said.

The explosions erupted at 3:50 a.m. Sunday, said Bob O'Hallaran, of Toronto Fire Services.

The blasts sent balls of fire into nearby homes and torched two large railroad tankers that were loaded with propane. Watch smoke plumes billow on the horizon »

The cause of the blasts was not immediately known.

Nurmi became a successful businessman in Finland and carried the torch into the stadium at the 1952 Games in Helsinki.

Protesters unfurl flags and banners near Bird's Nest stadium

Four protesters including two Britons have been detained in the Chinese
capital after hanging Free Tibet banners close to the main Bird's Nest stadium.

The demonstration underlined the clash between competing views of the Olympics in Beijing, as thousands of euphoric spectators cheered the arrival of the torch in Tiananmen Square while foreign activists launched a series of small protests around the city.

Given the massive security operation in the capital and the carefully organised audience, no one expected demonstrations in or around the square during the relay.

US and British campaigners scored a publicity coup by climbing electricity poles at dawn and unfurling outlawed Tibetan flags and banners with Free Tibet slogans in Chinese and English. Their protest took place just outside the Bird's Nest, where the opening ceremony will take place on Friday.

Just days before the Olympic torch will reach Beijing, Internet leaders Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft say they are close to an agreement on a code of conduct for doing business in China and other countries that censor the Internet.

Sen. Dick Durbin on Monday released separate letters from the companies, stating they have "reached agreement on the core components of the principles" of the code, as Google put it.

Google said the companies are working toward "a set of clear and rigorous principles, such that restrictive governments would be unable to ignore or reject these best practices on freedom of expression and the protection of individual privacy."

"This code of conduct would be one important step toward our shared goals of promoting freedom of expression and protecting the privacy of Internet users around the world," Durbin said in a press release.
