Tomatoes could be the key to staying slim, researchers believe, helping
dieters to feel fuller for longer.

Nutritionists have long recognised that vegetarians and others who eat a lot
of fruit and vegetables are much more likely to be slim than those drawn to
a standard modern diet of highly processed foods.

But now it seems it is not just down to the fact that fruit and vegetables
 contain fewer calories.

Tomatoes are rich in the compound lycopene, which scientists believe may help
to make people feel more full by lowering appetite hormones.

"It was a small study, and we can't yet say what the crucial tomato
ingredient is, but the results were statistically significant," Dr
Julie Lovegrove, a specialist in nutritional metabolism who is leading the
 project, said.

If you do not have a “recovery drink” be sure to eat protein in your next meal. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, pretzels, tomato juice, and chocolate milk are all good food alternatives to the scientific drinks. Many runners I know love French fries and chocolate milk after a marathon—it works great and you deserve the treat!

Clip Source: runningdoctor.runnersworld.com

Recovery drinks and foods are an important consideration and should be practiced in training.

In order to understand what to eat and drink, you need to understand what you are “recovering” from. When you exercise, muscle membrane breaks down on a microscopic level and there are mico-tears of muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Healing (and minimizing post-event muscle soreness) depends on having amino acids in your body to re-build the protein in these structures. One also should replenish carbs and fats that were used to provide energy. Therefore, a good diet all week that includes these food groups is important, as is a good pre-workout (or pre-race) meal.

My favorite pre-workout (or race) meal is the “Elvis bagel”

peanut butter and banana on a bagel

On hot days, I use a salted bagel to get extra salt in my system. (I don't use gels; I like real food.)

Timing before the run is individual and should be practiced in training.

Tags: running, running-doc, health, nutrition, recovery

<clipSource>http://runningdoctor.runnersworld.com/2008/07/what-is-your-fa.html</clipSource>

Kiwis barking mad when naming their pooches

clipped by: hotdoge3

Clip Source: www.nzherald.co.nz

The most unusual included Aeroplane Ears, Ting Ching, Stolen, Fugly, Jesus, Rangatira Skid, Fish, Slimey, Tomato, Toaster, Communion, Botox, Coast Guard, Death, Samfoomfa, Awesum, Piddles, Griffy Griff Griff, Poopoo, Trevor the Wolf and X.

Some owners went for multiple moniker, such as Alfred Pupsicle Trounson Clarke, Hippo Musafa Nambala, Danger High Voltage and Berlios Rotunda Fancy Pup.

Alcohol was the inspiration for many names, with Tequila, Budweiser, Stella, Bollinger, Moet, Merlot, Cristal, Bourbon, Clicquot, Guiness, Whiskey, Speights and Tui registered around the North Island.
4 Chicken Breasts
2 Jars of Salsa
1C Corn
1C Black Beans

Layer ingredients in Crockpot & cook on low 6-8 hrs.
Remove meat, shred and return to the sauce.
Serve on tortillas with fixings (lettuce, tomato, cheese, salsa etc)

Variations:

Bake in the oven at 350 for about 1 hr instead of using the crockpot.
Don’t shred & serve on tortillas, but serve as chicken breasts.
Serve over noodles or rice.
Use other parts of the chicken. Remember that leaving skin on increases the ending fat content.
Use “Rotel” style tomatoes in place of the salsa, or use 1 jar salsa and 1 jar crushed tomatoes.
Spice it up with Spicy Salsa, a dash (or 2 or 3) of Tabasco or a package of Taco Seasoning.
Use “mexican” style corn-or leave it out all together
Use any type of cooked bean.
Add 8 oz of Cream Cheese or 1C sour cream to the sauce right before serving for a “creamy” version.

<clipSource>http://www.frugalupstate.com/2009/10/recipe-crockpot-salsa-chicken.html</clipSource>

Fried Green Tomatoes

clipped by: heartlandcats
clipper's remarks: fried green tomatoes 2 has pictures.

Clip Source: cherryhillcottage.typepad.com

Fried Green Tomatoes~

1 large egg, lightly beaten

1/2 cup buttermilk

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup cornmeal

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon pepper

3 to 4 medium-size green tomatoes, cut into 1/3-inch slices

Vegetable oil

Salt to taste

Combine egg and buttermilk; set aside.

Combine 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, cornmeal, 1 teaspoon salt, and pepper in a shallow bowl or pan.

Wooster Scientists Help to Close in on Microbe Threatening Tomato and Potato Crops

WOOSTER, Ohio - A menacing microbe, the same one responsible for the Great Irish Potato
Famine, has been spreading throughout the northeastern United States since the
early 1990s, threatening both tomato and potato crops in the region - but its
days may be numbered. The genome of this disease-transmitting microscopic organism
(Phytophthora infestans or plant destroyer) has been sequenced by a large group of scientists, which includes William Morgan, professor of biology,
biochemistry and molecular biology at The College of Wooster, and Sophien
Kamoun, formerly of the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center
(OARDC). The two worked collaboratively with nearly 50 other scientists over a
10-year period. Their findings were published in the Sept. 13 issue of Nature.

<clipSource>http://www.wooster.edu/News-and-Events/News-Releases/2009/September/Nature-Morgan.aspx</clipSource>

Tri-Color Penne Rigate in Pesto

clipped by: 747 angel

Clip Source: www.olivegarden.com

Tri-color Penne Rigate in Pesto

As I don’t like to use a lot of processed foods, I was trying to find a way to make a healthier version of this classic recipe, and I was able to come up with a way!
