Ohio Boy Given H1N1 Vaccine Against Mom's Wishes

OREGON, Ohio — A furious Ohio mother says her 7-year-old son, who has had problems with medications, was vaccinated for swine flu at school against her wishes.

Kim Lutheran works as a nurse and says her son, Matthew, has had bad reactions to medicine. So, she says she signed for "no consent" on a vaccination form and then circled her intentions with a black marker to make things clear to the boy's public school in the Toledo suburb of Oregon.

Lutheran says she learned Matthew still received a shot on Monday. She says the local health department must be held accountable.

Deputy Health Commissioner Larry Vasko says his agency has responded by changing the consent forms, telling parents not to sign or return them if they do not want their children vaccinated.

"Supposedly three people looked at this piece of paper before he went to the R.N. who gave him the immunization. ... He's 7. He didn't know."

Former police association contractor charged with snooping on 'Joe the Plumber'

A former contractor for the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police has been charged with rummaging through state computers to retrieve confidential information about "Joe the Plumber."

The charge is a first-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail.

The Toledo-area resident was popularized as "Joe the Plumber" by Republican John McCain in a presidential debate the night before with Democrat Barack Obama.

The Dispatch revealed several questionable checks of state computer systems for confidential information about Wurzelbacher after the presidential debate.

Helen Jones-Kelley, then director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, authorized several computer checks on Wurzelbacher that the state inspector general concluded had no legal purpose.

Jones-Kelley, who was suspended by Gov. Ted Strickland after The Dispatch also revealed that she used her state e-mail account to raise campaign funds for Obama

El Ministerio de Defensa habrá retirado de sus instalaciones antes de fin de año todos los símbolos franquistas sujetos a la Ley de la Memoria Histórica, ha afirmado este lunes el secretario de Estado de Defensa, Constantino Méndez.

El secretario de Estado, en un encuentro con periodistas, ha señalado que los trabajos para dar cumplimiento a esa ley se están desarrollando sin problemas y que los cuarteles y museos militares son diligentes en este sentido.

Ha estimado que en diciembre no habrá elementos sujetos a la ley en las instalaciones militares

Méndez también se ha referido en concreto al museo del Ejército de Toledo, donde se encuentra la cripta y el despacho del general Moscardó.

Defensa protegerá la cripta y facilitará el acceso a la misma, por respeto a los familiares, mientras que el despacho —del que se conserva una reconstrucción— se mantendrá fuera de la visita al museo.

Savage, 40, is due to give birth to a boy within the next two weeks via cesarean section. When it happens, biological parents Paul and Shannon Morell, of Michigan, will be nearby, waiting to meet their son.

"How do you thank somebody for what they've done?" Shannon Morell said. "I could say thank you a million different ways."

The Savages say the fertility clinic transferred the wrong frozen embryo to Carolyn's womb in early February. Ten days later, Sean Savage got a call from a doctor saying his wife was pregnant with someone else's child.

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Carolyn Savage didn't know what to think, what to say, where to look as the ultrasound wand glided over her belly. It was supposed to be her baby inside. Not someone else's.

Yet here she was in her doctor's office with the baby's biological mother, both brought together by a terrible error at a fertility clinic. A doctor, they said, had given Savage the wrong embryo, and now she was carrying the other woman's child.

"The wand is on my abdomen and the technician's talking to someone else: 'There's your baby's nose. There's your baby's head,'" she said. "It was surreal."

Embryo mix-ups at fertility clinics are extremely rare. In those few instances, they've degenerated into custody battles, ugly lawsuits and at least one abortion. But not this time.

University of Toledo's College Republicans are compiling a list of liberal professors who they claimed have a bias against conservative students.

GUATEMALA CITY - Jean Anleu was so fed up with corruption in his country that he decided to vent on the internet, sending a 96-character message on the social-networking site Twitter.

That message has now earned him a potential five-year prison sentence and the unfortunate distinction of becoming one of the first people in the world to be arrested for a tweet.

Writing under his internet alias jeanfer, Anleu urged depositors to pull their money from Guatemala's rural development bank, whose management has been challenged in a political scandal: "First concrete action should be take cash out of Banrural and bankrupt the bank of the corrupt."

These words illegally undermined public trust in Guatemala's banking system, according to prosecutor Genaro Pacheco.

Anleu's lawyer, Jose Toledo, believes the government wants to make an example of him.

His lawyer hopes this will all blow over and the trial, set for November, will never happen.
