Clouds that look like breasts

Few will have seen a sky like it. Yet this extraordinary-looking cloud formation wasn't photographed in exotic climes, but in St Albans, Hertfordshire, on a recent August evening. What is it and how did it form?

MAMMATUS FORMATION

The bobbly clouds that make this image so startling are called mammatus clouds - a name derived from the Latin word for breast. They hang under the main body of other clouds.

"There is one prerequisite for a mammatus formation - a big thunderstorm - because they form on the back edge of retreating storms," says BBC broadcast meteorologist Peter Gibbs.

In storms, air moves in rapid "up draughts" and "down draughts" and mammatus clouds are essentially pockets of air and water droplets which have descended in downward draughts, he says.

While the whole cloud might measure 0.5 of a mile (0.8km) across, each mammatus cloud or "udder" is several metres wide.

Several weeks ago, a volcano that had been dormant for 9,000 years near the
coast of Chile erupted spectacularly, hurling liquefied rocks many miles
into the sky with lightning. The results, which you see here, are called a

'dirty thunderstorm,' and are quite rare.

Nobody is certain what causes them, but according to National Geographic
it's believed to be 'the result of rock fragments, ash, and ice particles in
the plume colliding to produce static charges-just as ice particles collide
to create charges in regular thunderstorms.'

Summer temperatures often climb into the upper 90s(F), but nights cool down into the 50s(F) and 60s(F). The thunderstorm season from July through September brings cloudbursts, flash floods and lightning. Spring and fall are milder with highs generally in the 50s(F) and 60s(F). 1. Nacreous Clouds

These rare clouds, sometimes called mother-of-pearl clouds, are 15 - 25km (9 -16 miles) high in the stratosphere and well above tropospheric clouds.

Christ the Redeemer Statue Struck by Lightning

An amazing photograph was taken during a thunderstorm capturing Rio de Janeiro’s world-famous statue of Christ the Redeemer being struck by lightning.

The statue stands 39.6 metres (130 feet) tall, weighs 700 tons, and is located at the peak of the 700-m (2296-foot) Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city. A symbol of Christianity, the statue has become an icon of Rio and Brazil. As of 2007, Christ the Redeemer, was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Was this a omen from God warning us of the trouble ahead or just a really cool looking act of Mother Nature? Let there be lightning!

A lightning bolt killed three Cambodian football players and put three others in hospital at a match in the south-east Asian nation's capital played during a monsoon season thunderstorm, officials said today.

The president of the Cambodian Soccer Federation, Sao Sokha, told Reuters the victims, all in their 20s, were taking part in a tournament organised by the government to introduce youngsters to the game and to build the strength of the national team.
