Dark Horse Challenging Murtha Turns Out To Be A Thoroughbred

Undeterred, Russell asked voters to write in his name on the primary ballot to be the Republican candidate in the upcoming general election. He received more than 4,000 write-in votes in the GOP Primary and another 1,000 in the Democrat Primary, enough to once again make him a candidate, Luksik said.

It is an impressive performance in a district with approximately 345,000 registered voters. Instead of the "dark horse" Murtha’s machine expected, they encountered a thoroughbred who apparently knows how to run.

His unlikely opponent in Pennsylvania's 12th District is an Army Reserve lieutenant colonel named William T. Russell, 47, a Desert Storm and Iraq war veteran who is barred by the Hatch Act from stumping until August 1 when his active duty stint ends. A Cinderella candidate running against the tide of Democratic hopefuls elsewhere, Russell is garnering national attention for his improbable early success.

Just getting on the ballot was a tough battle for Russell, a political outsider who came to roost in Pennsylvania after serving his country around the world. During his military career he lived in 11 states and seven countries. Despite such handicaps he still managed to obtain enough voter signatures get on the primary ballot as the only Republican candidate in the district.

“He is just a nice guy,” Luksik explained. “When people hear him, when they meet him, they come away impressed.”

Editors of The Blood-Horse recently sought the answer to this question by producing a comprehensive review of 34 years of historical Thoroughbred stallion progeny records pulled from The Jockey Club's extensive database. The full study, containing more than 200 pages, is available as a free download in PDF format.

Eric Mitchell, executive editor for digital media of The Blood-Horse notes, "There has been anecdotal evidence for years that the Thoroughbred of today is not as tough as it has been in the past. We compiled stallion progeny race records for foal crops from 1970 through 2003, broke the data down by decade, and then calculated starts per foal for each stallion and each decade to look for trends. We were looking to see whether the starts per foal have decreased over time and clearly they have."

U.S. Congress to hold hearing on horse racing safety without Big Brown trainer

The Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection had been looking forward to hearing from the trainer known for his candour and for methods that were brought into question after his star horse's stunning last-place finish at this month's Belmont Stakes.

Dutrow said he used a legal steroid on Big Brown - although the last dose was given in April - and the horse also ran the race on a quarter crack in the left front hoof in a failed attempt to become the first Triple Crown winner in 30 years.

The hearing will go on, with much to discuss. An Associated Press survey last week found that thoroughbred racetracks reported more than three horse deaths a day in 2007 and 5,000 since 2003. The impetus for the hearing came when Eight Belles broke down at the Kentucky Derby last month and was euthanized on the track, well before the travails of Big Brown at the Belmont.

Congress Calls June 19 Hearing on Racing

According to a June 11 release from the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, the hearing will look at “commercial breeding practices that emphasize speed and precocity over durability, the prevalence of performance-enhancing drugs and other medications, track surfaces, and maintenance of the tracks.”

The following is a “witness list” for the June 19 hearing, more details of which will be available soon.

Panel II: Sue Stover, veterinarian at the University of California-Davis; Larry Soma, veterinarian at the University of Pennsylvania; Dr. Mary Scollay, recently hired as Kentucky’s equine medical director; Dr. Wayne McIlwraith, veterinarian at Colorado State University; and Alex Waldrop, president and CEO of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association.

No Evidence Found Eight Belles Was Injured During Derby

Stuart Janney, a thoroughbred owner and breeder who will chair the committee, said breeding practices, track surfaces and medication are among the subjects to be discussed.

"We're going to use this committee as a bully pulpit to be persuasive on certain matters, and go to other people in the industry and say, 'This is how we feel, how are you going to help us?'" Janney said.

No evidence found filly was injured during Derby; drug test will also be performed

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Eight Belles had no pre-existing bone abnormalities that caused the filly to break down after finishing second in the Kentucky Derby.

Autopsy results reviewed by The Associated Press today confirm compound fractures of both front legs at the fetlock joints. They also describe lacerated skin on both legs, an absence of joint fluid in the damaged areas, congested lungs and hemorrhaging in the left thyroid gland. The filly's head also was bruised.

Eight Belles was euthanized on the track at Churchill Downs after collapsing while jogging about a quarter-mile past the finish line. Stewards found no evidence she was injured during the race.

Also today, the racing industry was proceeding with plans to ramp up horse safety following the deaths of Eight Belles and 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, among others

A day after Big Brown blazed across the finish line, the snapshot of Eight Belles down on the dirt set off a raging debate that extended far beyond the Kentucky Derby: Is horse racing now facing an image crisis?

With the memory of Barbaro still fresh, Eight Belles' catastrophic injury Saturday put increasing focus on a sport already trying to overcome a decline in popularity.

Her death has raised thorny issues about the whole Thoroughbred industry, including track safety, whether fillies should be allowed to run against colts, and whether horses are bred too much for speed and not for soundness.

clipper's remarks: Third, we should ban the racing of 2- and 3-year-olds so popular on the U.S. track. In Europe, horses are typically raced later, when their "growth plates" (leg bones) are fully formed and they are less prone to injury. Greedy Americans don't want to spend the money to keep the horse "hanging around" (to wit, not earning money) until they are 4 or 5 years old, and so we race them before their legs are strong enough to handle injury.

Many horses are forced to live 23-7 in their stalls, except for the hour or so per day when they are exercised. The human equivalent would be tying someone to his or her bed for 23 hours per day, only letting them out to run for an hour. Wouldn't you go crazy under those circumstances?

I hope Eight Belles's death serves as something more than a one-day news story. I hope her sacrifice causes every fan of horse racing to stop patronizing the sport or betting on the mounts until major reforms take place.

I've been writing these past few weeks about horrendous and fatal equine accidents in the sport of three-day eventing. I own seven hunter/jumper show horses and maintain my own 40-acre horse farm.

There are several things that must be done immediately to spare further equine abuse and death. Mr. Squires touched on some of them, but not all. Yes, new forms of artificial track footing, which have been mandated in California, should be mandated nationwide.

Second, the trend toward breeding thinner-boned thoroughbreds should be banned immediately. Horses are bred for speed, which often means thin-boned legs. The thinner the bone, the more easily it breaks. Horses with broken or fractured legs don't always have to be "euthanized" (I prefer the term slaughter, since that's what it really is). They're often killed when owners decline the alternatives: huge veterinary or board bills to keep injured horses standing in hoists for a year or more to allow their bones to heal.

California Horse Owners Evacuation

Many horse owners have evacuated, applying the lessons learned after a string of similar fires ravaged the area in 2003 and left dozens of horses dead and hundreds abandoned.

In 2003, an estimated 50 horses, 20 cows, and 10 goats were killed by fire in San Diego County, according to Terry Paik, DVM, of El Cajon, who worked with California officials to determine the extent of area animal losses. He further estimated that about 400 horses were treated by veterinarians for burns and/or smoke inhalation. Some 250 horses left unclaimed at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club were listed as strays.

Large Animal Veterinary Associates in El Cajon, Calif., horse owners in the San Diego area are better prepared to deal with fire than they were four years ago.

"A lot of the horses have been moved two or three times," Catt said, because of the fires' spread. "That's kind of what we dealt with last time--you think you get into a safe location and then, several hours later, you have to load them up and move them again.

"There's a whole crew of volunteers and they're just bringing them in," noted Seitz.

Thoroughbred horse racing is to resume at Randwick on December 1, the first race meeting to be held in front of racegoers since the outbreak of equine influenza in late August.

Races in the equine influenza-affected areas outside of Sydney are to resume from this Saturday.

"We've been through the most horrendous period since August 25 with the equine influenza outbreak," the head of Racing NSW Peter V'Landys said.
"It is unheralded that racing has been stopped in NSW."

The NSW Minister for Primary Industries Ian Macdonald said equine influenza had "basically plateaued".

One of Thoroughbred Racing’s Greatest Stars, John Henry, Will be Sorely Missed

LEXINGTON, KY (October 8, 2007) John Henry, the legendary Thoroughbred racehorse who was twice Horse of the Year, was humanely euthanized at the Kentucky Horse Park today at 7:00 pm.

The sad but unanimous decision was reached by a team of people who knew him best. The park’s equine director, Kathy Hopkins stated, “After continued successful efforts to maintain the quality of John Henry's life, in the past 48 hours he did not respond to our medical intervention.

He lived 32-and-a-half years, and went peacefully to sleep surrounded by a small circle of friends who were closest to him, including Cathy Roby, who has been his friend and caretaker for 16 years and his breeder, Verna Lehmann.

Horse flu: NSW to give $7.5m

She urged breeders to band together and voice their concerns to the Government.
A DPI spokesman today said that biosecurity was everyone's responsibility, including horse owners and their vets.
He said a DPI inspector would be unable to visit other properties for 24 hours after being on an infected site.

Pregnant Arabian horse dies of flu

The owner of a pregnant Arabian horse that died after contracting horse flu has attacked the Queensland Department of Primary Industries for its response to the crisis.

Penny Toft, a breeder and exporter of Arab performance horses from Marburg, west of Brisbane, last night had a mare put down, due to complications that developed after it contracted equine influenza.

The mare, valued at between $50,000 and $75,000, was just a week away from delivery and its foal also died.

The NSW Government has announced a $7.5 million assistance package for the state's racing industry to help it recover from the equine influenza crisis.

Under the plan, $3.5 million is to be provided as additional assistance to the thoroughbred and harness racing industries. Another $1.2 million will be made available in grants of up to $2000 per household for eligible workers in the racing industries.

Woodford Reserve to offer 132 juleps for $1,000, or more

A typical mint julep, served in a souvenir glass, at this year's Kentucky Derby will set you back $9.

But if you really want to turn heads at the track, you can fork over $1,000 or more for one of 132 special juleps served in gold-plated cups with silver straws.

The pricey cocktails again will feature exotic ingredients -- mint from Ireland, organic sugar from Australia and ice from the Bavarian Alps. But after race fans snatched up the 50 sold last year, the brand's marketing team is aiming to sell one drink for every Derby winner, from Aristides in 1875 to Barbaro in 2006.

All proceeds from the promotion will go to Thoroughbred Charities of America, which assists retired horses and disabled jockeys.
