Origine géologique :

A une époque antédiluvienne, une des principales mers qui recouvrait la planète s’appelait Téthys.
Or à la faveur d’un important tsunami, un bouleversement au niveau de certaines plaques tectoniques firent que Téthys passant sous la masse rocheuse donna naissance au mont Himalaya ; C’est pourquoi aujourd’hui encore on peut trouver des fossiles marins au sommet de l’Himalaya…

Téthys, fille d’Ouranos (le Ciel) et de Gaïa (la Terre) occupe l’une des toutes premières places parmi les divinités primordiales de la Grèce Antique.
Son nom signifie : “ nourricière ”.
Elle est un symbole de la fécondité des eaux. Unie en mariage à Océan, elle donna naissance aux Océanides et à une multitude de sources et fontaines, assurant de la sorte à la nature une nécessaire et bienfaisante humidité.

How old are Saturn's rings? No one is quite sure. One possibility is that the rings formed relatively recently in our Solar System's history, perhaps only about 100 million years ago when a moon-sized object broke up near Saturn.

New evidence, however, raises the possibility that some of Saturn's rings may be billions of years old and so almost as old as Saturn itself.

Seen here, Saturn's rings were imaged in their true colors by the robotic Cassini in late October. Icy bright Tethys, a moon of Saturn likely brightened by a sandblasting rain of ice from sister moon Enceladus, is visible in front of the darker rings.

clipper's remarks: The Great Himalayan region is one of the few remaining isolated and inaccessible areas in the world today. Some high valleys in the Great Himalayas are occupied by small clustered settlements. Extremely cold winters and a short growing season limit the farmers to one crop per year, most commonly potatoes or barley. The formidable mountains have limited the development of large-scale trade and commerce despite the construction of highways across the mountains linking Nepal and Pakistan to China. Older trails, which cross the mountains at high passes, also have limited trade and are open only during the summer months.

The Himalayan mountain system developed in a series of stages 30 to 50 million years ago. The Himalayan range was created from powerful earth movements that occurred as the Indian plate pressed against the Eurasian continental plate (see Plate Tectonics). The earth movements raised the deposits laid down in the ancient, shallow Tethys Sea (on the present site of the mountains) to form the Himalayan ranges from Pakistan eastward across northern India, and from Nepal and Bhutan to the Myanmar (Burmese) border. Even today the mountains continue to develop and change, and earthquakes and tremors are frequent in the area.

This new evidence helps to resolve a longstanding problem concerning the origins of the Pliopithecidae. It was previously considered that specialized pliopithecids migrated into Europe during MN 5, originating from an unknown antecedent and location in Africa. Recognition that the Sihong primates have affinities with pliopithecids, but are more primitive, suggests that the initial differentiation and diversification of the clade may have taken place in Asia rather than Africa.

The associated vertebrate fauna indicates a late early Miocene age (correlating with MN 4, late Orleanian of Europe, ∼ 17-18 Ma), which establishes the Sihong primates as the earliest known catarrhines from Eurasia.

ISLAMABAD, July 27: In what appears to be a major discovery, archaeologists have found two over one million years old human footprints preserved on a sandstone at the Margalla Hills.

The Indusians Research Cell, which is working under the supervision of world renowned archaeologist and historian Dr Ahmad Hassan Dani of Taxila Institute of Asian Civilisations, Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, has made the discovery, which is likely to add a new chapter to the archaeological history and heritage of the federal capital and attract visitors.

Indusians Research Cell started the second phase of the project “Post-earthquake Explorations of Human Remains in Margalla Hills” under the supervision of A.K. Azad.

“It has provided a missing link, which was spread of 6 million years. So Potoharmans declared as the grand father of hominid, which evolved from the different stages and reached at the Homo sapiens,” he observes.

The theory of plate tectonics estimates that the Indian sub-continent has moved 4,400 kilometers northwards since the close of the Mesozoic era, 140 million years ago. About the Middle Permian or more than 200 million years ago, an extensive sea stretched along the latitude presently occupied by the Himalaya. Into this geosynclinal sea known as the Tethys (daughter of the Ocean) was depostited vast quantities of sediments from the northern Angara (Eurasian) and southern Gondwana (Indian) land mass. The Initial mountain building process started seventy million years ago when the Gondwana plate and Angara plate began to converge and collide. The sea-bed was folded and raised into longitudinal ridges and valleys. This Upper Cretaceous uplift was the first spasm of Himalayan orogeny.
