Today, Barack Obama broke his silence on the mortgage bailout long enough to publicly decry the "staggering price tag" of $700 billion.

Pardon me if I scratch my head at his choice of terminology, considering Mr. Obama has proposed over $1.4 Trillion in new spending programs should he win the White House this November.

If the $700,000,000,000.00 price tag on the treasury bailout is "staggering" to Mr. Obama, I wonder what word we should use for his proposal of $1,400,000,000,000.00 in new spending programs.

What kind of Experience?

Barack has been in office three years, and running for President for two of those. Palin has been Governor, _actively_ for two years, and has other experience before that.

It's kind of funny the way this is turning into a race between Obama and Palin. But then, between Obama and McCain, experience isn't something the media wants to talk about.

As a long-time CEO, allow me to offer a few observations about “experience” that are clearly not being brought out.

There is a huge difference between experience that indicates “tactical competence” (i.e., knowledge of job processes, competitors, terminology, etc.) and that which indicates “strategic competence” (i.e., demonstrated ability to solve problems, make good judgments, take decisive action, etc.). It is the latter, not the former, which qualify someone to be Chief Executive. And 20 years of the former do not trump 2 years of the latter.

So the media’s obsession with questions determining the tactical competence of any candidate simply reveals their own lack of understanding. Chief executives cannot simply vote “present”. They need to act. Boldly.

On that basis, there is only one candidate in this election who has demonstrated strategic competence. That candidate is Sarah Palin.

Web terminology makes it so much harder when people are starting their online journey; suddenly you being bombarded all these foreign terms and widgets are a classic example! In simple terms widgets are mini web applications that you can put onto your website (i.e. blog, wiki, homepage) e.g. the Clustrmap on the side bar is a widget.

What is wrong with Western civilization is the accepted habit of judging political parties merely by asking whether they seem new and radical enough, not by analyzing whether they are wise or unwise, or whether they are apt to achieve their aims.

The usual terminology of political language is stupid. What is “left” and what is “right”?

Reaction against an unwise policy is not to be condemned. And progress towards chaos is not to be commended.

People hasten to exchange their “old” ideas for “new” ones, because they fear to appear old-fashioned and reactionary. They join the chorus decrying the shortcomings of the capitalistic civilization and speak in elated enthusiasm of the achievements of the autocrats. Nothing is today more fashionable than slandering Western civilization.

“Orthodoxy” is not an evil if the doctrine on which the “orthodox” stand is sound.

What mankind needs today is liberation from the rule of nonsensical slogans and a return to sound reasoning.

For those of you unfamiliar with New Orleans culture, a good place to start is that there are basically only two kinds of people in New Orleans.

The first is those folks that live, as one [of Bunny's] cartoon characters puts it, in Gatorland -- "Yeah, you know ... ova dere across Magazine where dey all wear dem shoits wid lil' gators on 'em." Otherwise knows as Uptown, you can tell folks from Gatorland in the cartoons because they speak English. Another clue is that all skinny people are from Gatorland, although not all people from Gatorland are skinny. And they often have 59 rows of teeth.

The other kind of New Orleanian is Everyone Else, dose folks dat talk normal.

there are oodles of ways that the locals pronounce the name of their beloved City.

<new or-LEENS> is generally a no-no.

Here are the major standard local pronunciations of the City's name: <new OR-l@ns>, <new AW-l@ns>, <new OR-lee-'@ns> <new AH-lee-@ns>, <nyoo AH-lee-'@ns>.

An anonymous German postcard from 1888 (left figure) depicts the image in its earliest known form, and a rendition on an advertisement for the Anchor Buggy Company from 1890 (center figure) provides another early example (IllusionWorks). For many years, the creator of this figure was thought to be British cartoonist W. E. Hill, who published it in 1915 in Puck humor magazine, an American magazine inspired by the British magazine Punch. (right figure). However, Hill almost certainly adapted the figure from an original concept that was popular throughout the world on trading and puzzle cards.

In computer terminology, a honeypot is a trap set to detect, deflect, or in some manner counteract attempts at unauthorized use of information systems. Generally it consists of a computer, data, or a network site that appears to be part of a network but which is actually isolated, (un)protected, and monitored, and which seems to contain information or a resource that would be of value to attackers.

Many frequent fliers can recite the mandatory pre-takeoff safety briefing along with the flight attendant delivering it. What they cannot do, however, is replicate the odd cadence and ultra-formal speech patterns known as airline English. Airline English is an unusual blend of standard English and airline jargon spoken almost exclusively by airline crew members, flight attendants and pilots.

One example of airline English is the nautical terminology associated with air travel. Passengers do not put their suitcases into the overhead cabinets, they "stow" their "cargo" into the overhead "holds." The staff on board an airplane are actually "crew members" who answer to a captain. Flight attendants routinely use this nautical terminology in complete sentences, which can be a little confusing to first time passengers.

Airline English can also be the result of repetitive social greetings, particularly the mandated "goodbye" to disembarking passengers.
