The end-to-end principle has proved to work well for applications that require a high degree of data accuracy combined with high tolerance for delay, such as file transfer, and much less well for real-time applications such as telephony where low latency is more important than absolute data accuracy. The end-to-end model is also not appropriate for large multicast and broadcast networks, especially those with high loss such as some wireless systems because the overhead it imposes on retransmission is too high for most applications to bear.^{[citation needed]}

FEMA phones hacked; more than 400 calls made to Middle East and Asia at cost of $12,000

WASHINGTON - A hacker broke into a Homeland Security Department telephone system over the weekend and racked up about $12,000 in calls to the Middle East and Asia.

The hacker made more than 400 calls on a Federal Emergency Management Agency voicemail system in Emmitsburg, Md., on Saturday and Sunday, according to FEMA spokesman Tom Olshanski.

FEMA is part of Homeland Security, which in 2003 put out a warning about this very vulnerability.

The voicemail system is new and recently was installed. It is a Private Branch Exchange, or PBX, a traditional corporate phone network that is used in thousands of companies and government offices. Many companies are moving to a higher tech version, known as Voice Over Internet Telephony.

"In this case it's sort of embarrassing that it happened to FEMA themselves — FEMA being a child of DHS, with calls going to the Middle East," Johnson said.

A PBX or "Private Branch Exchange" is like a miniature phone company/switch in your own office/house. The PBX is responsible for making sure calls are routed properly. Situation: when Joe wants to dial Suzy in the office down the hall or downstairs in the TV room, he just picks up the phone in his room/office and dials a local extension just a few digits long. [...] Also, if Joe has four teenaged kids, instead of answering their calls and acting as the house receptionist, he can just set up a menu that allows callers to dial the person they want and then needs not be disturbed.

Telecom regulator TRAI on Monday removed all curbs on internet telephony in the country, allowing internet service providers (ISPs) to terminate internet telephony calls on phones, including mobiles.

3G (or 3-G) is a designation for the third-generation mobile telephony. The services associated with the third generation provides the possibility of transferring both voice and data (a telephone call) and non-voice data (such as downloading programs, exchange of email and instant messaging).

Initially the installation of 3G networks was slow. This was due to require operators to acquire an additional license for a frequency spectrum was different from that used by previous 2G technology. The first country to implement a commercial 3G network on a large scale was Japan . There are currently 164 commercial networks in 73 countries using the WCDMA technology [1].

Sweden awards five 4G mobile licences

Five bidders have paid €226 million ($346 million) for fourth generation (4G), super-fast mobile telephony licences, the Swedish Post and Telecom Agency (PTS) said on Thursday.

According to Telenor, Sweden and Norway are the first two countries in Europe to assign 4G licences in the 2.6 GHz band.

"The use of mobile broadband services has increased dramatically during the last few years. By making the frequencies in the 2.6 GHz band available to market players, PTS provides opportunities for end-users to gain access to high capacity mobile communications services," Marianne Treschow, the director general of PTS, said in a statement.

In a separate statement, TeliaSonera, seen as a possible acquisition target by France Telecom, said it would "be able to build a next generation super-fast mobile broadband network, offering access speeds of more than 100 Mbps.

Insects Communicate via Plant Telephony

Dutch ecologist Roxina Soler and colleagues have discovered that subterranean and aboveground herbivorous insects can communicate with each other by using plants as telephones. Subterranean insects issue chemical warning signals via the leaves of the plant, alerting insects aboveground that the plant is already ‘occupied’.

Aboveground, leaf-eating insects prefer plants that have not yet been occupied by subterranean root-eating insects. Subterranean insects emit chemical signals via the leaves of the plant, which warn the aboveground insects about their presence. This messaging enables spatially-separated insects to avoid each other, so that they do not unintentionally compete for the same plant.

Via the 'green telephone lines', subterranean insects can also communicate with a third party, namely the natural enemy of caterpillars. Parasitic wasps lay their eggs inside aboveground insects.
