10. The Y2K Bug: Crappest techno-crisis ever (1st January 2000)
The disappointments started early this decade. For years there had been rumblings about an impending IT meltdown due to the widespread (and rather short-sighted) abbreviation of years into two digits.

As media scaremongers counted down to the apocalyptic ’00 switchover, the Millenium Bug hype ramped up considerably and, as I remember it, people began stockpiling tins of analogue food and steam-powered hair straighteners in a desperate bid to stave off the annihilation of civilisation.

One million strollers recalled after fingertip amputations

US authorities have announced a recall of 1 million baby strollers made by Britain's Maclaren, saying they posed a risk of "fingertip amputation" to young children.

"Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed," the Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a statement.

The Chinese-manufactured strollers' hinge mechanism "poses a fingertip amputation and laceration hazard to the child when the consumer is unfolding/opening the stroller", the commission said.

The firm has received 15 reports of children placing their finger in the stroller's hinge mechanism, and 12 reports of fingertip amputations in the United States.

The recall involves all Maclaren single and double umbrella strollers. They have word "Maclaren" printed on the stroller and included models Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, TechnoXLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveller.

The products sold from 1999 until this month for between $US100 and $US360.

Jailbreaking your Apple iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS or iPod Touch is a complex process for many out there, with a host of negative consequences that would be enough to scare even myself off, were I not so techno-curious. The unique process came about when it was discovered that certain functionality of the iPhone had code written into its kernel to allow for certain features to work, yet Apple decided to make sure these functions went undetected. Many iPhone and iPod Touch users were understandably upset and began looking for a way to turn these features on. After all, they're there, so why not allow them to be used? Well, finding a way to do this is and was not easy.
