Making a mockery of jihad

Recent terror attacks in India and abroad have created an impression that jihad is central to Koranic teaching

jihad does not mean war in the Koran as there are other words for it like qital and harb. Jihad has been used in the Koran in its root meaning: to strive for betterment of society, to spread goodness

and contain evil

But supposing jihad means war, as some Muslims believe, even then it still isn't central to Koranic teachings. The word "jihad" occurs in the Koran 41 times though not a single verse uses it in

the sense of war.

The four most fundamental values in the Koran are justice

benevolence

compassion

and wisdom

One who fails to practice these values can hardly claim to be a true Muslim

It can be said that compassion is most central to Koranic teachings. The words "compassion" and "mercy" in their various forms occur in the Koran 335 times

To seek revenge is human weakness, not strength

We all know Sarah Palin isn’t running on brains, but just for fun I decided to research her academic background:

4 different schools in 5 years, two of which were community colleges. Her greatest “academic” achievement was 3rd place in the Miss Alaska beauty pageant.

Call me an elitist, but I’d feel safer if the person a John-McCain-stroke away from the presidency had more education than the average waiter at Denny’s.

A few of her favorite educational ideals

Teach creationism alongside evolution in schools. (Aug 2008)

Supports teaching intelligent design in public schools. (Aug 2008)

Faith-based materials ok in homeschooling. (Nov 2006)

Researchers teach computers to search for photos based on their contents

A pair of Penn State researchers has developed a statistical approach, called Automatic Linguistic Indexing of Pictures in Real-Time (ALIPR), that one day could make it easier to search the Internet for photographs. The public can participate in improving ALIPR's accuracy by visiting a designated Web site http://www.alipr.com, uploading photographs, and evaluating whether the keywords that ALIPR uses to describe the photographs are appropriate.

ALIPR works by teaching computers to recognize the contents of photographs, such as buildings, people, or landscapes, rather than by searching for keywords in the surrounding text, as is done with most current image-retrieval systems. The team recently received a patent for an earlier version of the approach, called ALIP, and is in the process of obtaining another patent for the more sophisticated ALIPR. They hope that eventually ALIPR can be used in industry for automatic tagging or as part of Internet search engines.

The money these greedy CEO's make should be used toward teachers. Granted - there needs to be metrics and performance criteria put on the teachers, but they def. do not get paid what they should.

When I recently saw an ad for a $125,000-a-year teaching job at a New York City charter school, my first thought was that it must be some sort of phishing scam. Everyone knows teachers don’t make $125,000. My second thought was, “Why shouldn’t we?” After visiting the school’s Web site and reading a New York Times article about the school, I realized it was not only legit, but potentially revolutionary in terms of education reform. So this school year, in addition to my regular special education teaching job, I’ve decided to get involved in the creation of this new school.

Pay-for-performance programs pay teachers in part for improvements in student achievement and many also reward teachers for demonstrations of knowledge, skills, or instructional performance. Bonuses are generally paid on top of a base salary, and programs may reward individual teachers, groups of teachers, or both.

Very often the information given is from people who are delirious, feel threatened, concerned about being responsible for an overdose, or hysterical because of the fear someone they know well may not survive. They can find it hard to trust a doctor without a clue.

A team of British and Australian researchers have found that medical students have little in the way of street smarts when it comes to recreational drugs.

Quarterly Journal of Medicine, the team reports that the majority of final-year medical students in the UK are unable to identify common recreational drugs such as cocaine by their street names - Nose Candy, Blow and Snow.

Based on a survey of 135 students at an inner-city UK medical school, the authors say the findings have implications for the teaching of pharmacology in university medical degrees.

Co-author Alison Jones, professor of medicine and toxicology at the University of Newcastle in Australia, says the students were asked first to identify the proper names of recreational drugs from a list that contained the names of legitimate licensed drugs and words sounding similar to recreational drugs

Jones says the results are of concern because the students managed to get only an average of 11 out of 24 street names correct

Vatican City, Oct 3, 2008 / 05:20 pm (CNA).- Marking the 40th anniversary of “Humane Vitae,” Pope Benedict XVI has sent a message to the president of the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family, in which he praises the Church’s teaching on contraception as the only way to understand the truth about human sexuality.

That important document, writes Pope Benedict, "deals with one of the essential aspects of the vocation of marriage, and of the specific path to sanctity deriving therefrom. In fact, the married couple, having received the gift of love, are called in their turn to give themselves to one another unreservedly."

Noting that the “possibility of procreating a new human life is inherent to the complete giving of the spouses," Pope Benedict explains that contraception seeks to “deny the intimate truth of married love."

New SPLC Documentary Premieres in Los Angeles

Nearly 1,500 people filled the historic Wilshire Theater in Beverly Hills yesterday to attend the premiere of the SPLC's new documentary, Viva la Causa, which depicts one of the seminal events in the march for human rights — the grape strike and boycott led by César Chávez and Dolores Huerta in the 1960s.

Like all of the SPLC's Teaching Tolerance products, it will be distributed free to classrooms across the nation. An estimated 50,000 teaching kits, which include the film and lesson plans, will be distributed to educators over the next two years.

What a Community Organizer Does

In her acceptance speech, Ms. Palin said, "I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities." Community organizing is at the heart of Catholic Social Teaching to end poverty and promote social justice.

So here is what Giuliani and Palin didn't know: Obama was working for a group of churches that were concerned about their parishioners, many of whom had been laid off when the steel mills closed on the south side of Chicago. They hired Obama to help those stunned people recover and get the services they needed--job training, help with housing and so forth--from the local government. It was, dare I say it, the Lord's work--the sort of mission Jesus preached (as opposed to the war in Iraq, which Palin described as a "task from God.")

They were making fun of a young man's decision "to serve a cause greater than himself," in the words of John McCain.

Helping Children Develop Their Brain Capabilities

As children grow, they develop their way of thinking, habits and behaviors. Some children, not having a good parental assistance may show development trends that differ from those having good parental guidance.

One of the things that parents could do to help their children in their everyday life is to enhance their mental capacities.

As such, parents can encourage their children to read books.

Children who do such activities on a regular basis can achieve a better logical thinking than those who do not.

Moreover, another brain developing practice for children is memory exercises. Memory exercises are one of the easiest practices for children as they can be done anywhere.

Furthermore, an interesting brain developing activity for children is the use of the least active hand for writing or drawing. Drawing one half of a picture with the most active hand and afterwards completing the other half with the non dominant one can be a good learning option for children. D
