Many philosophers find it hard to think of animals as moral beings, and indeed de Waal does not contend that even chimpanzees possess morality. But he argues that human morality would be impossible without certain emotional building blocks that are clearly at work in chimp and monkey societies.

Baya Bakari told her father at a hospital in Yemen that she heard voices around her in the Indian Ocean, but could not see anyone.

Ms Bakari, who lives in Paris with her family, was treated in hospital in Moroni for injuries, said to include a fractured collarbone and burns.

Al Sharpton claims: "They want to skin Michael Jackson and make him into a wet suit!"

Surfers everywhere were hoping the rumor wasn't true, except in Puerto Rico where interest was running high.

Speaking from the gates of the Jackson Family Compound, Rev. Al Sharpton (The preacher without a church) made a statement during an interview that LA authorities have sold Michael Jackson's corpse to a leading California surfing equipment manufacturer.

"Those crackers want to skin his body and turn the King of Pop into a wet suit for surfers!" Claims an irate Sharpton as he launched into a tirade in front of a mostly black crowd. "What's worse...Michael can't even swim!"

California Surfers, Inc has denied the allegation and promised to look into it. It also commented that Michael Jackson indeed never knew how to swim and said all its wet suits were made from Puerto Ricans and they would never use one that had a skin disease.

We swim in a sea of information, but filter out most of what we see and hear. A new analysis of data from dozens of studies sheds new light on how we choose what we do and do not hear. The study found that while people tend to avoid information that contradicts what they already think or believe, certain factors can cause them to seek out, or at least consider, other points of view.

We wanted to see exactly across the board to what extent people are willing to seek out the truth versus just stay comfortable with what they know,

The studies they reviewed generally asked participants about their views on a given topic and then allowed them to choose whether they wanted to view or read information supporting their own or an opposing point of view.

The researchers also found, not surprisingly, that people are more resistant to new points of view when their own ideas are associated with political, religious or ethical values

Whale watching season has begun in Australia and the star attraction of the annual migration – Migaloo, a rare albino humpback – made his first appearance off the eastern coast this week.

The white Eastern Australian humpback celebrity, who was spotted off the coast of northern NSW, causes so much interest during his annual swim up to northern Queensland that the local environment authorities this week declared him a ‘special interest whale’ and threatened to issue hefty fines for anyone who gets too close.

There is now a 500m (1,600ft) exclusion zone around Migaloo for boats and jet skis, and aircraft must not venture closer than 2,000ft above.

“Migaloo has been declared a special-interest whale, granting him more space to swim up the Queensland coast,” Ms Jones said.

“The whale-watching regulations are there to protect the whales, but also to protect people from these huge, unpredictable mammals.

US swim trials for 2012 Olympics return to Omaha

(AP) OMAHA, Neb. - The U.S. Olympic swimming trials will return to Omaha in 2012, with a temporary pool again being set up inside the Qwest Center.

USA Swimming made the announcement on Thursday. The trials to choose the U.S. team for the London Games will be held June 25-July 2.

The 2008 trials were held at the Qwest Center for the first time, averaging more than 12,000 fans each night over eight days. Nine world records were set in the temporary 50-meter competition pool.

A warmup pool will also be installed inside the 17,000-seat Qwest Center in downtown Omaha. The adjacent convention center will again host a 100,000-square-foot sponsor and fan experience area.

cleaning up the Cuyahoga River in Ohio, USA, over the last 40 years. Amazingly, this river was so polluted in the 1960s and 70s it caught fire (more than once). Most fish couldn't survive in the water, and it would certainly have been foolish to swim in it.

But media coverage led to environmental activism, which in turn spawned regulation and ultimately the birth of the Environmental Protection Agency - and the Cuyahoga got cleaned up. Now, people kayak up and down the river, which is filled with all kinds of fish. As the NPR article points out, the waters aren't pristine, but they are much healthier. It seems the public spotlight is quite an effective bleaching agent!
