So much for austerity chic! The couture shows opened in Paris on Monday with "Let them eat cake" delirium in the face of global gloom. Yet the cakes were so delicious, so light, sweet and delicately made that you could do nothing but smile benignly.

On the runway, Topshop Unique's show was young, carefree - and winking at the expansive, show-off style of the 1980s. But offstage - beyond the sharp-shouldered jacket smothered in hearts, the vivid colors, the faded denim and the winking diamond ring of the newly married Peaches Geldof (daughter of Sir Bob of Live Aid) - things may not be so cheerful for Britain's most lauded fast-fashion company.

Sir Philip Green's decision to take on America has stalled because of logistical problems with the New York site. Topshop's feisty chief executive, notably absent from the London shows he is sponsoring this week, is in New York to push forward the opening. It was originally slated for October but is now delayed until, at least, November.

Green announced in February that the first American Topshop would be on Broadway in Manhattan's SoHo district. No further U.S. rollouts are, as yet, planned.

A sculpted winter coat the color of a juicy orange told the story from Narciso Rodriguez. Techno tutus, knits woven into a rainbow coalition and dresses dripping red like blood sang out the message at romantic Rodarte. And Matthew Williamson wove it all together with his patterns of cross-stitch samplers.

The focus of the fall/winter 2008 season is primarily on colors. And this from a city where wearing any color as long as it is black has long been a mantra - at least for daytime clothes.

"An Angel Passing By" was Christian Lacroix's take on his collection, yet for all the lightness and sweetness of the show, with its vivid colors and artistic flowery decoration, this was not a show about flights of fancy. It was rooted in Lacroix's vision as firmly as the new generation puff-ball skirts were grounded in the models' fuchsia hose and black and white checkered shoes.

"I was influenced by the two years of research," said Lacroix, referring to the exhibition "Histoires de Mode" at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, in which the designer mingled his 20 years of design with the fashion museum's archives.

As the falling snowflakes embedded Moscow in its long winter, a fur coat might seem a necessity rather than a luxury.

But while three Russian designers unveiled their glamorous wares in a fashion show at the State Historical Museum at Red Square, one of them had a different take.

"My mother couldn't afford a fur coat when I was young - so I don't see it as a necessity for keeping warm, I use it like any other material," said Igor Chapurin, who has used his Russian fashion house to bring creativity to fur.
