Ballot measure 4, which survived a challenge that went all the way to the state Supreme Court to remain on the state's primary ballot, would have prohibited large metal mines from contaminating salmon streams and drinking water sources. Though by law the ballot measure couldn't name a specific project, everyone knew it was aimed at the proposed Pebble Mine, which if developed as planned would be North America's largest open pit gold mine, also mining copper and molybdenum (a crucial element in steel).

Clip Source: www.alternet.org

Alaska is one step closer to approving Pebble Mine, which threatens the world's largest salmon fishery and native communities.

After spending their life of several years in the sea, the fish make their way up streams to the places where they were born. They don't eat, all their energy focused on their single-minded goal of spawning, after which they will die. Their flesh turns red from the effort, and hormones cause the males to develop a hump and a sinister-looking, toothy hooked beak.

The salmon life cycle is also part of the cycle of life for thousands of Alaska natives and Alaskans in general. Bristol Bay is known as the world's largest wild salmon fishery. With more than 30 million salmon worth hundreds of millions of dollars caught per year, it is a bedrock of commercial fishing and Alaska natives' subsistence fishing as well as a popular sport-fishing destination.

<clipSource>http://www.alternet.org/water/96843/</clipSource>

Mammoths moved 'out of America'

clipped by: amgumen

Clip Source: news.bbc.co.uk

Scientists have discovered that the last Siberian woolly mammoths may have originated in North America.

They believe that woolly mammoths survived through the period when the ice sheets were at their maximum, while other Ice Age mammals "crashed out".

When his body was cut in
two by a lorry in 1995, it
was little short of a medical
miracle that he lived.

He survived against all the odds; now Peng Shulin
has astounded doctors by
learning to walk again.

Skin was grafted from his
head to seal his torso – but
the legless Mr Peng was left
only 78cm (2ft 6in) tall.

They came up with an ingenious
way to allow him to
walk on his own, creating a
sophisticated egg cup-like
casing to hold his body with two bionic legs
attached to it.

Mr Peng, who has to learn
how to walk again, is said to
be delighted with the device.

<clipSource>http://www.metro.co.uk/weird/article.html?in_article_id=56500&in_page_id=2</clipSource>

Mother Teresa

clipped by: buttershap

Clip Source: www.beliefnet.com

Born to Albanian parents in what is now Skopje, Macedonia (then part of the Ottoman Empire), Gonxha (Agnes) Bojaxhiu was the youngest of the three children who survived. movies it was known long before it was actually true. But in medical
applications the trick isn't blowing things up, but convincing the
laser to stop burning things up in a precisely controlled way. In this
case fiber optic cabling (like copper wire for light) was used to
direct the laser to the correct location, and constant Magnetic
Resonance Imaging (MRI) allowed surgeons to monitor its progress on a
screen - like a very expensive videogame. And you only get one life.

<clipSource>http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2008/09/brain-blasting.html</clipSource>

Brain Tumor Blasting Laser

clipped by: papananook
clipper's remarks: Now if Medical science could just give me a new back...

Clip Source: www.dailygalaxy.com

Palin,” she said, suggesting it would come “on the radio, in the mail, on the phones, and in the organizing on the ground.”

Though the campaign says the ad was released before Palin was chosen, Michelman said her selection, and her strong anti-abortion stance, would drive the issue closer to the center of the race.

“By his nomination of Gov. Palin, McCain has made his opposition to a woman’s right to decide a major campaign issue,” she said.

Clip Source: www.politico.com

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Barack Obama has launched a broadside against John McCain’s opposition to abortion rights and moved one of the most divisive issues in modern American politics to the airwaves on a large scale for the first time in this presidential campaign.

Obama supports abortion rights, though he was criticized by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Democratic primary for avoiding votes on controversial abortion issues.

McCain aides didn’t respond to a question about the ad, but Republican Party communications director Danny Diaz responded by attacking Obama's opposition to an Illinois bill that advocates said would protect babies who survived abortions, and critics said was an attempt to limit all abortions.

ANDERSON, S.C. — Authorities say a Michigan man survived after his hot air balloon plunged thousands of feet at a South Carolina festival because the basket caught a tree limb 10 feet before it hit the ground.

Great Southeast Balloon Fest officials say pilot Chuck Walz, of Munith, Mich., broke his leg and pelvis Sunday morning, but has undergone surgery and his recovery is promising.

Anderson Fire Chief Jack Abraham says Walz's balloon may have been 9,000 feet in the air when it deflated.

Abraham says the balloon's basket was skewered by a tree branch 10 feet from ground, stopping its fall. Walz then fell from the basket to the ground. He was conscious when rescuers arrived.

Federal aviation officials are investigating the incident.

"Despite the serious injuries he was even conscious when we found him. Caua Felipe Massaneiro survived a 30-foot (10-meter) fall because his diaper snagged on a security spike embedded in the concrete wall around his apartment building in the northeastern Brazilian city of Recife.

The boy dangled from the spike for a moment, then "the diaper opened and the baby fell to the ground, but at a much slower speed," a police officer said.
[I]t appears that Pallin's [sic] last child, a baby with Down's syndrome, may not be hers. It may be that of her teenage daughter.
