According to Human Rights Watch report:

Russian aircraft dropped RBK-250 cluster bombs, each containing 30 PTAB 2.5M submunitions, on the town of Ruisi in the Kareli district of Georgia on August 12, 2008. Three civilians were killed and five wounded in the attack. On the same day, a cluster strike in the center of the town of Gori killed at least eight civilians and injured dozens, Human Rights Watch said. Dutch journalist Stan Storimans was among the dead. Israeli journalist Zadok Yehezkeli was seriously wounded and evacuated to Israel for treatment after surgery in Tbilisi. An armored vehicle from the Reuters news agency was perforated with shrapnel from the attack.

Retrolabyrinthine Balance (Vestibular) Nerve Section

This surgery is designed to preserve hearing. This procedure requires general anesthesia and a one week hospitalization. An incision is made behind the ear and the mastoid air cells removed. An opening is made in the posterior fossa dura (brain covering) and the eighth cranial nerve (hearing and balance) is identified behind the inner ear. The balance portion of the nerve is identified and selectively cut.

The immediate postoperative period is similar to a labyrinthectomy. (see "Labyrinthectomy" for more details)

There is a chance of developing a spinal fluid leak or meningitis. There is a 5% chance of total deafness in the affected ear. Temporary facial weakness or paralysis is rare but may last for several days, weeks or even months. It generally resolves completely.

Despite episodes of immune rejection, the second and third patients ever to receive the pioneering surgery say their lives have improved enormously as a result

Two men who received face transplants – one after being mauled by a bear and the other because of a facial tumour – are said to be happy with the results up to two years later.

Thirteen months after his operation, the patient with the tumour was able to resume full-time employment as an accounting agent. "He has a normal life. He takes the bus every morning," said Prof Laurent Lantieri, the surgeon at the CHU Henri Mondor hospital in Créteil, France, who was part of the operating team.

"The only thing which is not perfect is the smile," said Lantieri. "The position of the muscles that we transplanted are not perfect so the smile is not perfect."

That's the estimated number of times the Ozark police tasered 16-year-old Mace Hutchinson whom they found lying underneath a highway overpass with a broken back that apparently resulted from fall. (News item here.) The police had been summoned by a 911 call that, one presumes, was placed by people who wished to help the teenager. Mace did not obey the policemen's orders but spoke incoherently instead and, so, they tasered him up to 19 times -- each time repeating the command -- before one of the police wondered aloud whether they should call an ambulance. In intensive care for the broken back and broken heel, Mace had to wait two days for surgery because the tasering had raised his white blood count and caused a fever.

Embryonic stem cells can be used to grow vats of red blood cells, which could lead to the creation of 'farms' that could provide limitless sources of blood, US researchers report.

The research by scientists from Advanced Cell Technology, the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester appears in the journal Blood.

"I think it's really a big break for us," says Dr Robert Lanza from Advanced Cell Technology.

Stem cells are the body's master cells, replenishing various cells and tissues as they die. Stem cells taken from days-old embryos are especially powerful, with the ability to produce any cell type.

Doctors hope to someday use them to provide tailor-made transplants for patients, and to study disease. One problem is that the immune system may reject tissues grown from someone else's stem cells.

Red blood cells may be an exception to this, because they do not have a nucleus.

"You don't have to worry about the DNA going haywire," says Lanza.

Nurses posts brain surgery pictures on Facebook

A nurse posted photos of herself clutching a lump of human flesh beside a patient having a brain operation for her Facebook page.

Her job at a hospital in Stockholm is now at risk after she put 14 photos from a brain surgery and a back operation to her account on the popular social networking site.

One showed the operating assistant holding indeterminate parts of the patient's body.

Cameras are banned from operating theatres unless they are intended as teaching aids for students. It appears that the nurse, who is unnamed for legal reasons, used her mobile phone.

The woman, who has been suspended, is said to be "devastated" by her actions. It seems she wanted to impress her friends with her high powered job.

It is not the first time that Facebook has got employees into trouble.

Last month Crystal Palace footballer Ashley-Paul Robinson embarrassed his club when he posted a message on the site saying he was having a trial with Fulham FC.

She also recently announced that she has had a double mastectomy. Cancer was found in one breast, and she decided to be cautious and remove them both. To top it off, she's making jokes about it. "I’m going to have cute boobs 'til I'm 90, so there’s that…I'll have the best boobs in the nursing home. I’ll be the envy of all the ladies around the bridge table." (This refers to the reconstructive surgery she's going to have.)
