Unwanted plastic buildup is so severe that governments across the globe have passed laws banning free plastic bags, and because the average supermarket chain is slightly less rich than a petrochemical country these laws are actually enforced. Millions who've had to balance precarious piles of groceries on the walk home might be pleased to hear about the biodegradable plastic being researched at the University of Hawaii.

Fermenting corn run-off with bacteria might sound like something farmers would do during Prohibition (or in Alabama), but it could be major commercial process in the future. The billion-scrabble-points

polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA to its friends) isn't just biodegradable - it can be made by recycling the waste products of corn-ethanol production, the process releases a quarter of the CO2 of regular plastic production and requires only half the energy.

I finally kicked the meat habit on Earth Day, March 1988, because my girlfriend promised to make it worth my while. And while she lived up to her promise, we only lasted another couple weeks before breaking up.

But the diet has stuck ever since.

Part of it is for health reasons, but mostly it's because I can't make the leap from this...

And I have to wonder how many other people would continue to eat meat if they had to slaughter it themselves. It's easy to become detached from where meat really comes from when it comes so nicely packaged at the supermarket. I also wonder if people would be willing to pay the price to eat meat if the US government were to stop subsidizing the industry. Without billions in taxpayer dollars, a hamburger would cost around $14.00... would people be willing to pay it when suddenly a veggie burger was so cheap by comparison?

I seem to be much healthier because of it, and am happy to contribute to a diet that's not destroying the planet.

Have you ever found yourself confused in the supermarket? Do you want to buy the right foods for yourself and your family? Fed up wading through the small print on the back of food packaging?

You’re not alone. We’re strongly in favour of the Food Standards Agency (FSA) ‘traffic light’ colours on the front of their labels. The traffic light front-of-pack nutrition label uses red, amber and green to indicate whether fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt levels are high, medium or low.

Asda, The Co-operative Group, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, M&S, McCain, New Covent Garden Food Co, Budgens/Londis, Avondale, Moy Park, Bombay Halwa, Brittania and S&B Herba have already agreed to use the FSA system.

A red light on the front of the pack means the food is high in something we should be trying to cut down on. It's fine to have these occasionally, or as a treat, but try to keep an eye on how often you choose these foods, or try eating them in smaller amounts.

Two-thirds of the women reported increased smell sensitivity, but they also reported distortions in smells, phantom smells and abnormal tastes, including increased bitter sensitivity and decreased salt sensitivity [source: Nordin et al.]. Women experienced these effects mostly during the first trimester of pregnancy, though a smaller percentage reported changes at a later stage of pregnancy as well. After pregnancy, all changes to smell and taste perception disappeared.

Frosted Flakes has three times the amount of sugar as Wheaties and 1/3rd the fiber.

This doesn't matter much to a virtuoso swimmer who consumes 12,000 calories a day.

Still, in a country where childhood obesity is an alarming issue, Phelps' iconic image sharing space with Tony the Tiger sends the wrong message, experts say.

"For a guy like Michael Phelps who isn't worried about obesity because he's burning thousands of calories as an athlete...eating Corn Flakes and Frosted Flakes every so often is not an issue," Solomon said.

Olympic legend Michael Phelps will appear on boxes of the Kellogg's brand sugar cereal, drawing sharp criticism from health experts worried about the message he'll be sending to children across America.

"I would not consider Frosted Flakes the food of an Olympian," said nutritionist Rebecca Solomon of Mount Sinai Medical Center.

"I would rather see him promoting Fiber One. I would rather see him promoting oatmeal. I would even rather see him promoting Cheerios."

Ingredients
Convert to Metric

1 cup ice cubes
1 cup chopped fresh pineapple
1 small ripe banana, sliced

THE four-week trial of a 10-cent levy on plastic bags will be launched this morning in Victoria.

The trial aims to cut plastic bag usage and will be launched at a supermarket in Narre Warren, on Melbourne's south-eastern outskirts, by Victorian Environment Minister Gavin Jennings.

Coles, Safeway and IGA retailers in Narre Warren, Wangaratta, in the state's north-east, and Warnambool, in the south-west, will all participate in the trial, to run from tomorrow to September 14.

Profits made during the trial will go towards environmental projects.

A British tourist has been sentenced to six months in a Dubai jail after being caught taking pictures up women's skirts in a shopping mall.

The man, a 28-year-old electrician from north London named only as L. R, admitted taking the pictures at the Carrefour supermarket in the Mall of the Emirates, using a mobile phone camera which he placed in a shopping basket.

He was apprehended by security guards after female shoppers complained they were being stalked.

He told Dubai's Court of First Instance that he had only taken one picture for a "laugh", sources said.

But the court was shown two pictures of women stored on the defendant's mobile phone, according to local reports.

The judge ordered the man to serve six months in prison.

He had been visiting friends who lived in the country and is thought to have been planning to find a job there.

Instead, he is likely to be deported back to the UK once he has completed his sentence.

clipper's remarks: My local supermarket has had a sign up for months letting shoppers know that from June 4th (yes I know its August). they can choose PEN or PIN when paying with credit or debit card. I've kept signing (PEN) up to this point in time. The funny thing is you cant make out my signature on the card but still that doesn't seem to bother anyone. I still get the goods EVERYWHERE.

In fact, said the Justice Department last week, it’s already happened, possibly to millions of people.

Buried in last week’s indictments of 11 alleged international computer hackers accused of stealing 40 million credit and debit account numbers from U.S. retailers was something far more unsettling: At at least one retail chain, the indictments accuse the group of swiping encrypted versions of debit card PINs, decrypting them, then using the information to print debit cards and get cash from ATMs.

clipper's remarks: I haven't read much about travel to Nigeria, save George Packer's great article in the New Yorker (see here: http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2006/11/13/061113fa_fact_packer)
about the city's informal economies. A New York Times reporter recently surveyed the city's nightlife, malls and substandard housing and found a huge gap between the wealthy and poor. I think it will be awhile before it becomes a real destination, but it should be interesting to see how travel there increases in the coming years.

But because of the rising price of oil, the declining United States dollar, the relocation of foreign workers from the oil-rich but kidnapping-prone Niger Delta, large privatization efforts and a mad dash for the city’s remaining plots of land, Lagos is more flush with cash and full of glitter than ever.

A recent study of the most expensive cities for expatriates by the consulting firm Mercer found that Lagos ranked 30th, making it only slightly less costly than New York but considerably more expensive than Los Angeles, Miami and Washington.

Dinner for two at an average restaurant costs more than $200. A cocktail costs more than $15. A box of cereal costs $12 at a supermarket. Hotel rooms under $400 are difficult to find.

Because of widespread corruption, the vast amounts of money coming in rarely trickle down in Nigeria.
