Make a Soothing Lavender Tincture

Do you find the scent of lavender soothing? Did you know that herbalists have used it for generations to naturally ease aches and pains? Here's a fun DIY tip:

Fill a clean glass jar with fresh lavender flowers, then top off with vodka. Seal the lid tightly and place in the sun for three days (same idea as making sun tea!).

Strain the resulting liquid through a coffee filter, and poof! You have a homemade tincture to rub into aches and pains. You can pour into smaller bottles, decorate them and give them as unique gifts.

Researchers in Singapore have created the first-ever “transition contact lenses,” which darken automatically in response to bright sunlight.

Transition lenses have been available for eyeglasses for four decades, but the technology has never before been implemented on contact lenses.

The darkening can accomplish two tasks: it can make the wearer’s vision in bright light more comfortable, and it can protect the eyes against the sun’s damaging rays.

It’s so fast, in fact, that initial tests proved the contact lenses faster than traditional transition sunglasses on the market.

The researchers say response time is 10 to 20 seconds — much faster than the minutes it takes traditional transition sunglasses.

Murdoch could block Google searches entirely

Rupert Murdoch says he will remove stories from Google's search index as a way to encourage people to pay for content online.

In an interview with Sky News Australia, the mogul said that newspapers in his media empire – including the Sun, the Times and the Wall Street Journal – would consider blocking Google entirely once they had enacted plans to charge people for reading their stories on the web.

In recent months, Murdoch his lieutenants have stepped up their war of words with Google, accusing it of "kleptomania" and acting as a "parasite" for including News Corp content in its Google News pages. But asked why News Corp executives had not chosen to simply remove their websites entirely from Google's search indexes – a simple technical operation – Murdoch said just such a move was on the cards.

Rupert Murdoch, chairman and chief executive of News Corporation, is considering removing his newspapers’ content from Google’s search index.

“I think we will [remove our websites from Google’s search index] but that’s when we start charging,” he said.

He added: "The people who simply just pick up everything and run with it – steal our stories, we say they steal our stories - they just take them. That's Google, that's Microsoft, that's Ask.com, a whole lot of people ... they shouldn't have had it free all the time, and I think we've been asleep."

Mr Murdoch, who has been vocal with his negative views of Google and its effect on the newspaper industry, said his stable of newspapers, which include The Times and The Sun, could be taken off Google’s search index when his plan to implement paywalls comes into effect.

THE sun’s million-degree outer atmosphere is the last place you would expect to find rain, yet a form of it does occur there. The stuff could help explain why the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, is much hotter than closer in.

Coronal rain is made of dense knots thousands of kilometres across consisting of relatively cold gas, at tens or hundreds of thousands of degrees C, which pours down towards the sun’s visible surface from the outer atmosphere at speeds exceeding 100 kilometres per second. “There’s just this constant rain of these blobs that seem to be coming down from high up,” says Judy Karpen of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
