But Moon’s hatred of America is not deemed news, in part, because Moon has financed the Washington Times since 1982 to the tune of more than $3 billion, according to former newspaper insider George Archibald.

Moon also has lavished many millions of dollars more to pay for conservative conferences and to bail out key right-wing figures when they have found themselves in financial distress, including Republican direct-mail guru Richard Viguerie and the late Jerry Falwell.

Plus, Moon has paid large speaking fees to former President George H.W. Bush – estimated in the millions of dollars – and has feted President George W. Bush’s brother Neil at recent events for the Moon-sponsored Universal Peace Federation.

One of the advantages that the American Right has achieved from investing tens of billions of dollars in media – from talk radio and cable TV, to print and the Internet – is the ability to define what is and what isn’t a “scandal,” a powerful factor in determining who wins national elections.

"True Father" to some, madman to others, Sun Myung Moon is one of the strangest and least scrutinized figures in the conservative media world.

The following is an adapted excerpt from John Gorenfeld's "Bad Moon Rising: How Reverend Moon Created the Washington Times, Seduced the Religious Right, and Built an American Kingdom" (Polipoint Press, 2008). The video at the right is from a 1997 Washington Times party where Moon said he founded the newspaper to save the world. In it, he also demands that his employees rid the world of "free sex," meaning sexual intercourse beyond the purifying influence of his mass weddings.

A few years back, John Gorenfeld published a series of pieces on a Sun Myung Moon-sponsored party on Capitol Hill that actually rattled some trees and embarrassed the people who showed. He disappeared after that, and I wondered why. The answer: He was writing a book, Bad Moon Rising , about the cult leader's influence in D.C. Today Gorenfeld put up this precious video of Moon speaking to a 15th anniversary party for the Washington Times. It's hard to pick a favorite moment, but I've got two nominees.

At least 100 landless people in southwestern Brazil have taken over a ranch owned by South Korean religious leader, Reverend Sun Myung Moon.

The families were tired of waiting for a ruling and invaded the property without a court's permission. A court decision must ultimately decide the case of whether the landless can remain.

Moon and his followers have bought up large tracts of land in Brazil.

On July 13, 2007, I visited Section 60 of Arlington National Cemetery, where the bodies of American soldiers killed in Iraq were freshly interred. Afterwards, I headed across the street to the Sheraton National Hotel, owned by right-wing Korean cult leader Sun Myung-Moon, to meet some of the war's most fervent supporters at the College Republican National Convention

In conversations with at least twenty College Republicans about the war in Iraq, I listened as they lip-synched discredited cant about "fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them over here." Many of the young GOP cadres I met described the so-called "war on terror" as nothing less than the cause of their time

Yet when I asked these College Repulicans why they were not participating in this historical cause, they immediately went into contortions

Through the early 80s, while Bush served as Vice President, Moon operatives were building ties with the New Right—flying Hill staffers to junta-ruled El Salvador, and supporting the Nicaraguan contras’ fight against the Sandinista government.

Following the February Holocaust Denial Conference hosted by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his new "main squeeze" Klan Leader David Duke, the couple jointly announced the news.
