British scientists have filmed a species of fish said to be the deepest-dwelling ocean animal ever captured on camera.

A team from Aberdeen University collaborated with their Tokyo counterparts to film the ghostly white Hadal snail fish off Japan’s east coast at a depth of 7,700m.

Deepest-living fishes caught on camera for the first time

Marine scientists filming in one of the world's deepest ocean trenches have found groups of highly sociable fish swarming nearly five miles (7700 metres) beneath the surface.

grocery bag (for pattern)

1 or 2 towels

durable canvas (for bottom)

polyfill (about 20 oz)

*you can also use regular cotton fabric, fleece, flannel, whatever!

i like to use the towels cuz there snuggly and you can find some really great coordinating prints for cheap at the discount stores.i also like them because they are macine washable. you can just stuff the whole darn thing in the washer.

i have grouped the tutorial into 3 parts

onto the next part...

...we're almost there...

so there you have it...one cozy pooch!

I'm told the Los Angeles Times mailroom opened a hand-scrawled letter today that read "death to Obama" and contained a white powder that triggered a call to the FBI and a city hazardous materials team. No one was injured and the powder proved to be harmless. My sources say the letter was addressed to staff writers Richard Serrano and Ralph Vartabedian and included a demand for a retraction to their story this week that detailed flying mishaps early in John McCain's Navy flying career. The nut mail was said to carry an upside-down stamp and language about saving babies in addition to the Barack Obama threat.

McCain Shouts "Terrorist!" in a Crowded Theater

McCain today released a shockingly inflammatory Obama-is-a-pal-of-terrorist-Bill-Ayers ad. Here's the link via Andrew Sullivan.

Sullivan, who has been a mensch on McCain-Palin, calls the ad "dishonorable."

His Atlantic colleague Ross Douhat calls it "Gloves, Off."

In both their cases, the hell it is.

McCain has crossed over into territory where the dark stuff of politics seethes and boils.He is shouting "terrorist" in a crowded theater, and juicing things up with creepy racist touches (notice one of the images of Obama in the ad uses the main one from the Obama-Is-A-Pedophile ad).

Forget the ad's disgraceful content and distortions of fact (see Gail Collins op-ed in the Times today for a deft spiking of these).

I keep recalling: the poisonous climate revved up by right wing fundamentalists in Israel prior to Rabin's murder.

I keep recalling: the radio campaign by Hutu extremists against Tutsi "cockroaches" prior to the Rwanda horrors.

Why do we need hope? I mean, we all know that while that song about hope, that nice motivational lecture you last attended, that movie you saw, that news report you saw where justice had been delivered finally, are feel good factors with a low shelf life. Then, before you know it, darkness descends again. Stuff happens to people who do no wrong.

Psychos turn enemies and friends turn psychos.

nothing prepares us for the evil present in good, and the wrongs the rights commit.

Why not join the bandwagon and become as indestructible a destroyer as you can. People wont dare hurt you, because they know that you will respond to a slap, with a sword.

BINGO!! Exactly. Aren’t these gun totters the very people whose menace we try to hope against.

Then you kill hope and convince yourself that world is not going to be fair.

When you forsake your ideals, something in you dies.

Those are very appropriate words.

Over the last week, here at Clipmarks, other forums, on radio, TV, in the newspapers and magazines there is a shocking virulent outburst of hate against Obama, trying to associate him with "domestic terrorism," and being a supporter of 'Islamofacsist," (the neocon propagada term the Republicans wave like a red flag).

In this age of 24-hour media coverage there is the real possibility of such vocal and visible fascist-like hatred and attempts to distort elections and destroy opponents can succeed.

It was done in the 2000 elections in the USA, which Al Gore won and Bush stole in Florida, with the help of a shouting mob.

We have to not only stand strong against this, but fight back, word for word -- & Vote Obama,

NASA's IBEX craft is heading out this month to map the edges of the solar system

The "termination shock" sounds like the stuff science fiction movies are made of. In reality, it marks the boundary between our solar system and interstellar space. The invisible "shock" forms as our sun's solar winds begin to encounter the gases and magnetic fields of outer space, which slows the winds down abruptly.

On October 19, NASA will launch the first spacecraft designed to image and map the interactions that take place in this boundary zone. The Interstellar Boundary Explorer, or IBEX, will be propelled from the Kwajalein Atoll into a high-altitude orbit that will eventually take it about 200,000 miles from Earth, where it will capture images of processes taking place in the termination shock and beyond.

Barack Obama is the first national candidate ever to hire ACORN, a controversial non-profit accused of voter fraud across the country, for get out the vote activities.

Obama’s campaign paid $800,000 to a subsidiary of the liberally-leaning non-profit Association of Community Organizers for Reform called Citizens Services Incorporated

This information, however, was not properly disclosed to the Federal Election Commission.

The FEC said the Obama campaign needed to disclose ACORN was engaging in get out the vote activities last August. At the time the Obama campaign called the mistake a “clerical error.”

ACORN has been accused of voter fraud in 15 states this election cycle.

This article is about the joys and practicalities of decluttering: Getting rid of the excess stuff that is sitting in your garage, basement, shed, or storage.

It's hard to get rid of things that 'might be useful'. Then there's junk that is too big, or not allowed for regular garbage, and then the stuff that's just too good to throw away.

There are lots of freecycle groups in Ottawa, all doing their best to "Keep good stuff out of the landfill".

A formula to calculate how old a sample is by carbon-14 dating is:

t = [ ln (N_f/N_o) / (-0.693) ] x t_1/2

where ln is the natural logarithm, N_f/N_o is the percent of carbon-14 in the sample compared to the amount in living tissue, and t_1/2 is the half-life of carbon-14 (5,700 years).

So, if you had a fossil that had 10 percent carbon-14 compared to a living sample, then that fossil would be:

t = [ ln (0.10) / (-0.693) ] x 5,700 years

t = [ (-2.303) / (-0.693) ] x 5,700 years

t = [ 3.323 ] x 5,700 years

t = 18,940 years old
