Religious Group Starves Toddler for Not Saying "Amen"

Ramkissoon and four others identified by police as members of a cult called 1 Mind Ministries are charged with first-degree murder in the death of Javon Thompson. Members did not seek medical care for Javon when he stopped breathing, and the boy died in his mother's arms, according to court documents that described police interviews with a confidential informant and two children. He would have been about 19 months old when police say adults stopped feeding him in December 2006. ...Another unnamed informant told police that after Javon died, Antoinette left the boy's body in a room for more than a week, claiming "God was going to raise Javon from the dead," the documents show.

It might sound absurd to say that God would raise this child from the dead, but it's no more absurd than believing that Jesus rose from the dead.

It's good to see Veterans are in Denver bringing attention back to the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The AP doesn't really go into much detail but they offer some analysis:

The Iraq veterans in Denver say they want to keep the war and veterans' issues in the public spotlight. They are doing that by soliciting donations at fundraisers for vets running for Congress, marching in demonstrations and throwing a concert Wednesday, headlined by Rage Against the Machine, for 8,000 people.

The public's welcoming of this generation of veterans had led to a different approach by young veterans who challenge the system, said Don Goldstein, a professor of public and international affairs at the University of Pittsburgh. Also, he said, the Internet has made communication easier.
"They are quieter, more organized now than ever before," Goldstein said.

I am the mother of a missing person. Never in my life did I think I would lose a child in this way -- someone that I gave birth to, someone that I loved, a daughter that any parent would be proud to have.
I did everything I could to protect my children from the pain I saw in my family. Yet, it wasn’t enough. I believed if I raised the kids in a better neighborhood with great schools and was always there for them, they would never have to suffer what their parents endured. My husband cared about their happiness, and would give his life for each and every one of them. I never knew what that felt like as a child. I thought I could stop the cycle.

A US federal appeals court ruled yesterday that 11 oil and gas companies should receive more than $1bn awarded to them in 2006 after the government effectively changed the terms of leases to drill off the California coast.

The US Court of Appeals was upholding a 2006 ruling that the government had breached the leases when changes in federal law materially interfered with the companies' efforts to develop the oil and gas reserves off California.

The case points to the difficulties US oil and gas companies have developing oil and gas resources in the US.

Partly because this story doesn't fit preconceived liberal storylines and partly because the Democratic Convention is taking up all the oxygen in the mainstream media, you can expect this story to remain buried in your newspaper and be given little if any attention on cable news networks.

It seems Megan Fox is really busy acting on different movies. First she was preparing for her new role for the movie "Jennifers Body" and now she is set to play Mother Teresa in a movie called "Making Of A Saint".

The movie follows the incredible story of Agnes, a beautiful young Macedonian woman growing up in a world torn apart by war. After receiving a message from God, Agnes travels to a remote nunnery to learn the ways of the Lord but, once there, her passions are aroused by a handsome young priest. These new feelings challenge her faith and threaten to destroy everything that she holds dear.

This internal struggle leads Agnes to face the most difficult decision of her life. Will she give in to the urges consuming her or will she forsake all others to serve her God? The decision she makes would change the world forever.

Seems like an interesting movie to buy a ticket. But is this sexy woman a good actress or it's just because she is so damn hot? We'll see it soon.

THE FACTS: McCain voted with President Bush 90 percent of the time from January 20, 2001, to when Congress left Washington on its annual August recess, according to a study by Congressional Quarterly. But McCain wasn't always a staunch Bush backer. In 2005, his support for Bush's position on legislation reached a low of 77 percent; last year, when he launched his latest bid for the GOP presidential nomination, he voted with Bush 95 percent of the time.

Dear Editor:

When I saw your headline "Obama Practices Humility Preached to Him" (August 24), I thought that the accompanying story must be a satire. But then I read the story and discovered that you're serious.

Get real. No truly humble person - no person who understands the limits of his own intelligence and capacity - parades around posing as the first plural pronoun in the outrageously narcissistic chant "we are the change we have been waiting for." No one with genuine humility utters anything so cocksure as Mr. Obama's promise to get one million 150-mpg cars on the road by 2015, or his vow to reduce Americans' carbon emissions by 80 percent (!) by 2050. Genuinely humble people don't presume to know how much profit earned by private companies is "windfall" - and they certainly don't formulate plans to confiscate such profits.

Indeed, no one within a light year of humility wants the kind of power and gaudy glory that Mr. Obama and Mr. McCain so desperately seek.

What a Great Message to Send to Kids

clipper's remarks: I have to say, this story is a perfect example of the wrong message we've been sending to kids for years.

As a former HS teacher, I've experienced first hand how kids now have an expectation that they all should be rewarded, all should succeed, and all should be entitled to and given everything they want.

Parents don't want this kid to play not because they're afraid he'll hurt their kids physically, but because they're afraid their kids won't succeed.

Instead of teaching the message that sometimes in life you encounter obstacles and need to work harder to overcome them, this story teaches kids if you encounter an obstacle, it's the obstacles fault and you can just give up.

In other words, you shouldn't expect to have to work hard to achieve what you want in life - it should just be given to you.

Some say it's too early to teach that lesson, but I say it's never too early. This is a perfect opportunity to teach your kids how hard work can pay off and lead to success.

US television network NBC censored the sexuality of Olympic gold medal diver, Matthew Mitcham it has been claimed.

After pulling off a last minute victory against the Chinese in the 10m dive, Mr Mitcham, while hugging his mother and his partner, he told reporters: "I want to thank absolutely everyone who helped; my partner Lachlan and my mum [Vivienne] here to support me and watch me get gold, because it was so important to have those two people here with me.

"I did not think I had a chance to get the gold and to actually get that was mind-blowing! I was crying thinking I had silver. And to get gold! I was a blubbering mess."

Despite intensive coverage by NBC of other Olympic athletes' families, Mr Mitcham's partner received virtually no attention during the network's coverage.

Cyd Zeigler of Outssports said: "It's a big story. The only openly gay male athlete in Beijing pulled off one of the great upsets at the Olympics in a spectacular fashion.
