Imams preach jihad and extremism in 10 percent of the 2,000 mosques in the United States, the FBI estimates.

That sums up the problem facing us as we ponder the meaning of Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan’s slayings of 13 people at Fort Hood, Texas. Given his association with a pro-al-Qaida imam in northern Virginia and his preoccupation with radical Islamic Web sites, it’s clear that the radical element of Islam influenced Hasan.

On the other hand, those who condemn Muslims in general because of the actions of Hasan and others like him are engaging in prejudice that has no place in America. Indeed, such stereotyping sets back the war on terror, because we need moderate Muslims on our side.

Islamists in southern Somalia have stoned a man to death for adultery but spared his pregnant girlfriend until she gives birth.

Abas Hussein Abdirahman, 33, was killed in front of a crowd of some 300 people in the port town of Merka.

An official from the al-Shabab group said the woman would be killed after she has had her baby.

Islamist groups run much of southern Somalia, while the UN-backed government only control parts of the capital.

This is the third time Islamists have stoned a person to death for adultery in the past year.

They [al-Shabab] are forcing women to wear very heavy clothes, saying they want them to properly cover their bodies but we know they have economic interests behind - they sell these kinds of clothes and want to force people to buy them

A 13-year-old girl was stoned to death for adultery in the southern town of Kismayo last year.

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Aceh, Indonesia’s northernmost province, has this month been compared to Somalia, Nigeria and even Iraq. So it goes when lawmakers decide that death by stoning is an appropriate punishment for adultery.

The fact is the law goes much further than that even. It also outlaws homosexuality and refuses to consider marital rape a crime.

Aceh is the country’s most devout region, the site where an Indian Ocean tsunami killed more than 130,000 people in 2004 and where, in 2005, a 30-year old civil war came to a peaceful, though tenuous, conclusion. As part of the European-brokered peace deal, Aceh was given a degree of autonomy from Jakarta.

Indonesia's province of Aceh has passed a new law making adultery punishable by stoning to death, a member of the province's parliament has said.

The law also imposes severe sentences for rape, homosexuality, alcohol consumption and gambling.

The legislation was passed unanimously by Aceh's regional legislature, said assembly member Bahrom Rasjid.

"This law will be effective in 30 days with or without the approval of Aceh's governor," he said.

Married people convicted of adultery can be sentenced to death by stoning. Unmarried people can be sentenced to 100 lashes with a cane.

"This law is a preventive measure for Acehnese people so that they will avoid moral degradation," said Moharriyadia, a spokesman for the Prosperous Justice Party.

About 90% of Indonesia's 235 million people are Muslim, practising a moderate form of the religion.

HAMANN: With the sun already set on the so-called "Veranda of Mecca" and just hours left before Aceh's parliament was to be dissolved, lawmakers signed off on the province's latest Sharia law.

The regulations include punishments for Muslims caught consuming alcohol, rape, paedophilia and homosexuality, but only adulterers will be stoned to death.

Leaders from Islamist parties, which dominated the former parliament, have offered various explanations for the law.

United Development party and legislative member Bachrom Rashid said it is designed to save people from hell.

RASHID: (translated) Sharia law is already being applied in Aceh and all Achenese people are Muslim, I am a Muslim, so it is impossible for me to refuse the regulation of Allah.

But Indonesia's Legal Aid Institute has already indicated it will challenge the bill in the Supreme Court.

A CENTURIES-old festival in which residents from rival Indian villages throw stones at each other - often leaving people dead or injured - has been banned.

The annual Gotmar festival in an impoverished central region of the country involved teams competing to capture a tree placed in a river running between two villages as crowds pelted rocks and pebbles across the divide.

The origin of the custom is unclear, but many locals in Madhya Pradesh state believe it developed from the tale of two young lovers who lived on either side of the river and wanted to elope together.

As they tried to escape, residents of the two villages started throwing stones at each other and killed the couple, according to folklore.

In last year's clash between Saargaon and Pandhurhna, one person was reported killed and more than 400 injured.

A finales de 2008 se reanudaron las lapidaciones en Irán. Houshang Khodadadeh y otro hombre no identificado murieron apedreados hacia el 26 de diciembre. El 5 de marzo de 2009, un hombre llamado Vali Azad fue lapidado en secreto en la prisión de Lakan, en el noroeste de Irán.

Después de un año en el que se registraron noticias alentadoras y en el que la acción de miles de activistas en todo el mundo consiguió parar la lapidación de al menos siete personas, 2009 ha empezado con estas terribles noticias.

Los dos nuevos casos de lapidación demuestran una vez más que las declaraciones de la Magistratura iraní, que en 2002 y en agosto de 2008 anunció sendas suspensiones de las lapidaciones, no son suficientes. Desde 2002 han sido lapidadas seis personas.

Por ello, es necesario redoblar los esfuerzos para terminar de una vez por todas con esta práctica atroz.
