Invisibility cloaks could take sting out of tsunamis

But Guenneau cautions that large structures like islands and coastlines are unlikely to become invisible anytime soon, because building the many small islands needed to protect one is such a big job.

"It's crazy – maybe only people in Dubai could do this," he adds, referring to the spectacular artificial islands built there.

Smaller structures such as offshore oil platforms would be easier to protect, he says.

Invisibility cloaks that are able to steer light around two dimensional objects have become reality in the last few years. But the first real-world application of the theories that made them possible could be in hiding vulnerable coastlines and offshore platforms from destructive tsunamis.

The first working invisibility cloak, built in 2006, guided microwaves around a small, flat copper ring as if it wasn't there.

By October 2007, a device repeated the trick for harder-to-handle visible light, and some progress is reported on the yet more complex task of making cloaks to hide 3D objects

Now Stefan Enoch at the Fresnel Institute in Marseille, France, says that established cloaking principles could be applied to ocean waves, which are essentially two-dimensional.

Such techniques could be used to render vulnerable coastlines or offshore platforms invisible to damaging waves, he says.

Last week, the Bush administration proposed a three-page bill to bail out Wall Street to the tune of $700 billion. It died in the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this week.

On Friday, though, the House approved a far bigger, broader, and beefier version of the bill--which has ballooned to a remarkable 442 pages. The vote was 263 to 171, with the bulk of the opposition coming from Republicans. Because the Senate already approved the measure, it immediately went to President Bush, who signed it into law.

The bill has become, in other words, something almost unrelated to the business of bailing out Wall Street. The Beltway term for this is a "Christmas tree bill," meaning everyone gets to hang their favorite spending projects on it--though by the time Congress gets it through, it more closely resembles a slop bucket.

Brain's Hub of Fear Found

clipper's remarks: The results of the study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, Burroughs Wellcome Fund, the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience and the Yerkes Center, are detailed in the October issue of the journal Nature Neuroscience.

The genetically engineered virus was injected into the amygdala of the mice by Emory graduate student Kimberly Maguschak. The amygdala is a part of the brain thought to be important for forming memories of emotionally charged events.

"We found that after beta-catenin is taken out, the mice can still learn to fear the shocks," Maguschak said. "But two days later, their fear doesn't seem to be retained because they spend half as much time freezing in response to the tone."

So it appears that beta-catenin is turned on in the amygdala to help in signaling during the learning process, Maguschak said.

Scientists may have found the glue that keeps fearful memories stuck in the brain, a discovery that could be useful in new treatments for Alzheimer's disease and post-traumatic stress disorder.

That glue seems to be a protein that is key to maintaining the structure of cells and also is essential to embryonic development, a new study suggests.

Previous studies have found other factors that govern our feelings of fear:

One study found a 'fear factor' gene that controls how neurons fire in the brain when mice are faced with impending danger.

Another found that the brain can learn to fear something, such as a bee's sting, when we view someone else's fear.

Another recent study detailed how primates and other mammals learned to fear and avoid snakes.

Aussie man loses $20k in online liaison gone wrong

BRISBANE - A Brisbane man has been stripped of $20,000 and left red-faced after his female friend turned out to be a man, in an online romance scam.

A 23-year-old man was arrested in Nigeria and charged with fraud over the incident which left 45-year-old Ralph Thomason thousands of dollars out of pocket.

Queensland Police Service worked closely with the Nigerian Economic Financial Crimes Commission in the overseas sting.

Police Minister Judy Spence said the arrest served as a timely reminder for people to be vigilant when using the internet to find romance.

"Requests to send money or personal information like account details overseas to an online companion should be treated with extreme caution."

Ms Spence congratulated police for playing a pivotal role in the arrest.

"Queensland police are leading the world when it comes to the investigation of Advance Fee Fraud internet-based offences," Ms Spence said.

Newman died Friday at his farmhouse near Westport following a long battle with cancer, publicist Jeff Sanderson said. He was surrounded by his family and close friends.

But true to his fiercely private nature, Newman remained cagey about his condition, reacting to reports that he had lung cancer with a statement saying only that he was "doing nicely."

He was nominated for Academy Awards 10 times, winning one Oscar and two honorary ones, and had major roles in more than 50 motion pictures, including "Exodus," "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "The Verdict," "The Sting" and "Absence of Malice."

Senator Seeks Withdrawal of Guilty Plea in Sex Sting

ST. PAUL — A lawyer for Senator Larry E. Craig asked the Minnesota Court of Appeals on Wednesday to allow Mr. Craig to withdraw a guilty plea to disorderly conduct after his arrest in a sex-sting operation at an airport men’s room last year.

Mr. Craig, Republican of Idaho, was arrested on June 11, 2007, at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport by an undercover airport police officer, Sgt. Dave Karsnia.

In his sworn complaint, Sergeant Karsnia stated that Mr. Craig had stared at him from outside a men’s-room stall for about two minutes. After entering the next stall, the complaint said, Mr. Craig tapped his foot and swiped his hand beneath the partition separating him from the officer. Those gestures are recognized as signaling interest in a sexual encounter, according to the complaint.

I used a can and a half of bee and wasp killer last week to no avail; there are just too many entrance spots. Would your tarp trick work here? It would probably kill the ivy but my wife and I got stung trimming the ivy so we are anxious to control this problem."

Well, Ed-ground-nesting insects that:

1) look like bees,
2) are highly active this time of year, and
3) aggressively sting people

are almost certainly yellowjackets.

They may look like bees but are actually a type of hornet-and very dangerous. If you've got a nest in a frequently-used area, it must be destroyed.

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. -- The Lee County Sheriff's Office says a Bonita Springs man has been arrested after offering undercover deputy who was posing as a prostitute two cents for sex.

Fausino Diaz Hernandez, 46, has been charged with soliciting a prostitute.

According to an arrest report, Hernandez offered a female undercover deputy two pennies on Thursday night.

Acting Sgt. Matt Chitwood, of the narcotics and vice operations for the Bonita Springs Community Policing unit, said Hernandez offered the undercover deputy other things as well, including cigarette lighters and a bicycle.

Hernandez's arrest was part of a three-hour sting to crack down on prostitution in Bonita Springs. He was one of 10 men arrested during the sting.
