KALAMAZOO, Mich. - A Kalamazoo County circuit judge has decided the best punishment for a man found guilty of stealing should be to take his son's words to heart - and wear them on his sleeve.

On Monday, Judge Pamela Lightvoet ordered 27-year-old Daniel Cleland to write or tape the words "Daddy, don't steal" on his arm or hand for seven months. The idea came from Cleland's comments before sentencing, when he told the judge about his 6-year-old's sage advice.

The Kalamazoo Gazette reports Lightvoet had considered sentencing Cleland to 7 months in jail on a felony charge of retail fraud. He also faces a misdemeanor retail fraud charge and has at least six previous felony convictions.

Cleland says he's trying to get out of "a really big hole." Lightvoet says it's his last chance to avoid jail.

Republicans accused Barack Obama of inflating his record after he claimed Tuesday to have proposed the foundation for the $150 billion economic stimulus package passed by Congress early this year.

“In January, I outlined a plan to help revive our faltering economy, which formed the basis for a bipartisan stimulus package that passed the Congress,” Obama said in Golden, Colo.

“Let’s have straight talk,” John McCain said Tuesday night in Ohio. “Today (Obama) claimed the congressional stimulus package was his idea. That’s news to those of us in Congress who supported it. Senator Obama didn’t even show up to vote.”

A New York Times report from Jan. 12 noted that Hillary Clinton was actually the first candidate to offer a short-term stimulus proposal, including $70 billion for housing and other aid and $40 billion in potential tax rebates.

Theft of any kind is pretty despicable, but to take from those who often have so little, those who in their daily commuting or errand-running inflict so little burden on the rest of us — there must be a special circle of hell reserved for such scum.

Well, if there is, there’s a place of dishonour in it reserved for Igor Kenk. Among the cycling community, he’s long been notorious for rumours that he buys and sells stolen bikes out of his Queen West shop. Now we all know just how well deserved that notoriety likely was, after he was arrested by Toronto police this week and charged with theft. In his shop, and in several storage locations around the city, it appears he may have had more than 2,000 stolen bikes in his possession. The charges he faces indicate that his operation was a driving force behind Toronto’s reputation as the bike-theft capital of North America.

As if we REALLY have any control over what happens to us in our "jobs" on a daily basis. I love working for the someone that never changes, is constant, will never lie, cheat or steal an idea---because they all come from Him in the first place.....interesting dynamic in trademarks, etc....if someone takes it---there's always another one, right behind it.

We Work For God

In a recent discussion with my wife, we both came to realize who we truly work for. We work for God. In the world today, many of us are defined by what we do for a living. If you think about it, what is just about the first topic that comes up when you meet someone new or see someone you haven’t seen in a while. It usually centers around their jobs or careers. If you ask someone to tell you about themselves without asking about their work, it will frequently come up first. Most of us work for someone, meaning we are not self-employed. This means we have a boss. It also means that if we do not keep the boss happy, he/she might ask us to find employment elsewhere. For those of us who have been through that experience, it can be very frightening, humbling and life-changing.

Despite the chaos and carnage of three nights of live punk at the Institute of Contemporary Arts punters would still be hard pressed to miss the three pogo-dancing robots in their midst.

The machines, which have been created by a collaboration of artists and scientists, have been designed to fall in love with punk music and show their appreciation through dance.

The robot punks take pride of place in the mosh pit at a series of gigs called Neurotic.

"I'm a computational neuroscientist and my interest is in trying to build mathematical and computational models for the way the brain processes sensory information, such as visual or auditory information.

"The idea is to look at the information processing strategies that have taken billions of years to develop through evolution, steal them and put them into computers."

The robots use neural networks, a collection of computer processors that function in a similar way to a simple animal brain.

If I steal something I have deprived you of something as in stealing a car deprives you of said car. Theft of the material and tangible. But taking something that can be infinitely copied; seems brazen to call that stealing. The idea that the loss of "potential" profits doesn't stand with me either. To me that's just a way of saying "We have plenty, but we want even more." I'm fortunate that many of my favorite musicians have left this model behind (NIN, Radiohead to name two) and have taken the stance that music is meant to be heard and not hoarded.

The recording industry and U.S. radio companies have squared off for decades about whether AM and FM radio broadcasters should pay royalties to singers, musicians and their labels.

But now the debate is getting meaner; there's more at stake as the recording industry seeks new income avenues in the wake of wanton peer-to-peer piracy and declining CD sales in part due to the iPod and satellite radio. A U.S. House subcommittee could vote as early as Thursday on a royalty measure.

On Monday, the recording industry sent the National Association of Broadcasters -- the trade group representing the $16 billion a year AM-FM broadcasting business -- a can of herring to underscore that it believes its arguments against paying royalties are a red herring. The NAB says its members should not pay royalties because AM-FM radio "promotes" the music industry.

Broadcasting music without payment is akin to piracy, the industry says.

If the idea of a sub-$200 3G touchscreen fashion phone sounds vaguely familiar, trust us, it's not just your noggin playing tricks on you. Sprint is apparently circulating documentation internally revealing that the Samsung Instinct will run $199.99 on contract after rebates, a move that doesn't really come as surprise; Sprint itself has worked overtime trying to play up the Instinct versus iPhone angle, after all, and it's entirely plausible that the carrier was holding out for Apple's announcement before settling on a price. Sprint will also be requiring that users sign up for an "Everything" plan when taking delivery of their Instinct, a move that smacks of AT&T's marriage of the iPhone to specific plans. The Instinct gets the jump on Apple's hardware by a few days thanks to a June 20 launch, so it'll be interesting to see just how much Cupertino thunder Samsung can steal here.

The new county law makes parking a taco truck in one spot for more than an hour punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 or six months in jail, or both. It replaces a longtime but rarely enforced measure that fined trucks $60 if they stayed in one spot longer than 30 minutes. The law affects unincorporated areas of the city – where about 60 percent of the population lives – and includes East Los Angeles, one of the biggest concentrations of Mexican-Americans in the United States.

"Why should a taco vendor be able to park in front of someone else's restaurant and steal his customers away with cheaper food?" asks one man, spearing pinto beans on a paper plate with a plastic fork.

"But making them move every hour is a bad idea," says another as he orders a veggie burrito. "How can a truck vendor keep loyal customers if he has to move so often?"

"This is about more than delicious and inexpensive food," adds his Web partner Chris Rutherford. "It's about people and community and neighborhoods."

Scientists Would Turn Greenhouse Gas Into Gasoline

The idea is simple. Air would be blown over a liquid solution of potassium carbonate, which would absorb the carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide would then be extracted and subjected to chemical reactions that would turn it into fuel: methanol, gasoline or jet fuel.

This process could transform carbon dioxide from an unwanted, climate-changing pollutant into a vast resource for renewable fuels. The closed cycle — equal amounts of carbon dioxide emitted and removed — would mean that cars, trucks and airplanes using the synthetic fuels would no longer be contributing to global warming.

clipper's remarks: Of note is the manner in which they left the state to go ahead an allocate 2 electoral votes to the overall winner. One presumes that Republicans even crafted that in anticipation of a move towards this happening in every state.

This kind of voting is closer to popular vote but with each state giving its 2 electoral (senator) votes to the overall winner it favors the republicans. The republicans usually win a majority of states because they are supported in the rinky dink states like North Dakota and Wyoming.

Gotta love those Republicans. Want to give Iraq Democracy (laugh snort) but craft skewed elections in the U.S.A. Stinking Jerks.

A California ballot measure that could give Republicans an edge in next year's presidential campaign by changing the way the state awards its electoral college votes won't make the June primary ballot and is now headed for November, backers said Thursday

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, opposes the idea because he says it would change the rules in the middle of the game. That made it harder to raise money for the initiative

California gives its largest-in-the-nation cache of 55 electoral votes to whoever wins statewide. Under the proposed measure, just two votes would be given to the statewide winner, with the rest allocated to the winner of each congressional district

If the measure qualified for the November ballot, it is still unclear whether it would apply to the presidential election vote to be held on the same day. One expert said it could, as long as proponents word their measure so it clearly states its effect on the 2008 race

New Credit Cards Incorporate Security Key Fob Features

This new kind of credit card being shown off at trade shows is designed to prevent against loss due to identity theft by incorporating a security key fob with a credit card. The idea is that when you buy online, swipe at the store, or take money out of the ATM, you hit a button to randomly generate a unique, disposable key code. Enter that code to verify the transaction. This way, someone would actually have to steal your physical credit card to conduct fraud. Best of all, it's the same size and thickness as a regular credit card.
