The move towards opening up statistics and public data along with APIs has lead to a great deal of phenomenal mashups, such as the Chicago Crime Mashup. But that's not all, this open data movement has lead to some very interesting development in the practice of data visualization.

Lorie pointed out that CBS has a new poll, so I went and had a look, and it's funnier than the comics. Sure, I generally like CBS because they have a consistent methodology, and because they always publish their questions and party breakdown. This allows me to reverse their calculations and see how they got their results.

First off, it's more fun if you play along at home, so here's the poll address.

OK, now let's keep it simple and start with page 14, the last page. Let's read together the last two sentences in that poll:

"Every registered voter is included in the likely voter model, and is assigned a probability of voting, which is used to calculate the likely voter results. The sum of these probabilities is the effective number of likely voters."

In those two sentences, the folks at CBS are admitting that they MADE UP THEIR STATISTICS ON LIKELY VOTERS!!! There are no real voters who were asked if they were likely to vote in this poll - not even one!

There are 305,335,105 people in the United States of America. If everyone in the U.S. lined up single file, the line would stretch around the Earth almost 7 times. That's a lot of people.

The U.S. Census Bureau statistics tell us that there are at least 88,799 different last names and 5,163 different first names in common use in the United States. Some names are more common than others.

There are 50,421 people named John Smith in the United States. There are 1,067 people named James Bond, 115 people named Harry Potter , 512 people named George Bush, and 32 people named Emily Dickinson. However, Johnny Cash (39 people) songs aside there are, statistically speaking, very few boys named Sue.

The most irritating and most seriously misleading involved the relative cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Three times, with great earnestness and passion, he cited a mysterious statistic claiming that we spend more every three weeks in Iraq than we have invested in the Afghan War for its duration.

Actually, statistics from The Congressional Research Service (posted on the website of the Center for Arms Control and Nuclear Non-Proliferation) show that our biggest Iraq expenditure came in Fiscal Year 2008 and reached $158 billion – or $3 billion per week. This means that Biden’s “three weeks in Iraq” would cost $9 billion at most.

As soon as I heard him make the comparison (watching the debate in a room with several hundred revelers who had come to celebrate my birthday) I blurted out, “He’s full of it! That’s an obvious lie.”

In any event, he now owes an apology to Governor Palin

“America’s Sweetheart” Miley Cyrus (who likely is trademarked and owned by Disney until 2014, at which point she will be 21 and worthless to them) is not yet 16 years old.

My examination of these leaked pics of her tells me that there is a very high likelihood that she is not a virgin, based on my thorough knowledge of human behavior. Could I be wrong? Yes, of course. But I’d bet I’m right. By the way, statistics show that 25% of women aged 15 or less have lost their virginity (Source: National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, Washington, DC, 1998)

The 2 pics below literally look post-coital … or pre-coital. Notice the happy glazed-over looks in their eyes and the body language.

Then there is the question of being against the "greed" of CEOs and for "the people." Franklin Raines made $90 million while he was head of Fannie Mae and mismanaging that institution into crisis.

With no thought for yourself, you step up to the plate and inform this man in no uncertain terms that he needs to check himself. Now is not the time for you to think about the language that you are using. You are direct and to the point. When he threatens to hit you if you swear again, you square your shoulders and call his bluff. Then the unthinkable happens. In front of his children and the family that you were protecting, he viciously physically assaults you. As you lie there unconscious no one but the little girl that you rushed to protect comes to your aid.....a busy packed McDonalds has just witnessed a grown black man repeatedly punch a young black woman, and no one, not a single person intervenes.

The Statement:
Sen. Joe Biden said at the October 2 vice presidential debate that the United States spends "more money in three weeks on combat in Iraq than we spent on the entirety of the last seven years that we have been in Afghanistan building that country … or six-and-a-half years in Afghanistan."

The facts:
Biden's remark seems to refer to two specific, and very different statistics: U.S. spending in Iraq only on combat operations, not on reconstruction and other activities; and U.S. spending on "building" Afghanistan — presumably, money for reconstruction in that country.

It's important to keep in mind that figures for USAID projects are only a portion of total U.S. spending in Afghanistan. In July, the State Department reported that, since fiscal year 2001, the United States has spent $17.2 billion on security in Afghanistan and $1.3 billion on "governance, rule of law, and human rights" efforts. Some may consider that latter figure part of "building" a society.

The American Kennel Club said in New York that Bear and Lady top the list of the most popular names for dogs in the United States.

The AKC said a review of 2007 registration statistics found Bear, Blue, Max, Duke and Buddy were the most popular names for male dogs while Lady, Belle, Princess, May and Rose were the most popular for female dogs.

"Traditionally names based on a puppy's physical appearance or personality, such as 'Spot' or 'Sassy,' have been popular with dog owners,'" said AKC spokeswoman Lisa Peterson. "Today we are seeing human names, such as 'Jack' and 'Molly,' and names that reflect a pet's stature in the home, such as 'King' and 'Princess,' gain in popularity as more people consider their dog a valued member of the family."
