Q: What's a commentary?

A: A commentary track is an alternate audio track available on some DVDs and Laserdiscs that lets you listen to people talk about the movie while you're watching it. Often they're done by directors, actors, and other people involved in the making of the film, but sometimes are done by film historians, film critics, or just some random person.

Q: What's the point of this site?

A: Some commentary tracks are very well done, and can sometimes be even more entertaining or worthwhile than the film itself. Others can be a complete waste of time. I wrote this site to help people find out which are which.

UK more at risk than other major economies of losing top credit rating

The warning, which coincided with news that the biggest devaluation in the pound since the 1930s has failed to stem the rising trade deficit, is the latest blow for the UK's economic credibility.

David Riley, Fitch's co-head of global sovereign ratings, said that record levels of Government debt meant that unless the next Government makes serious efforts to bring spending under control and reduce that debt, Britain could lose its AAA rating.

In spite of the fall in sterling, the trade deficit widened in September to the biggest level since January, increasing from £6.1bn to £7.2bn, according to the Office for National Statistics. The increase was partly due to a rise in car imports, as the scrappage scheme encouraged households to spend and pushed car imports up by 30pc

"If there was another significant fiscal stimulus package in the UK, then UK rating would be at risk."

although exports rose by 3.9pc, imports increased by 7.5pc.

Recovery hopes rise on surprise unemployment figures

British unemployment is rising at a far slower rate than expected, official figures revealed today.

The number of people out of work increased by 30,000 to 2.46 million in the three months to September while the number of people in work rose for the first time in more than a year.

The jobless rate is 7.8 per cent, confounding expectations for an increase to 8 per cent.

The number of people in work rose by 6,000 in the three months to September, the first increase since the three months to July 2008.

The figures will raise hopes that the worst of the recession has passed and that unemployment will peak at a lower level than the three million previously feared.

The Office for National Statistics said that people claiming benefits rose by 12,900, far below a forecast 20,000 rise.

Game developer's newest 'call of duty': Help vets find jobs

Unemployment may have hit double digits in the nation last week, but for veterans, finding a job has always had its challenges. The unemployment rate among people who served in the military since 2001 was 11.6 percent in October, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Of those veterans who had found work, 25 percent earned less than $21,840 per year, the VA study said. Fifty-eight percent of recent veterans worked in the private sector and 36 percent had government jobs, according to the study.

The foundation will make its first donation of $125,000 to the Paralyzed Veterans of America to help open a vocational rehabilitation center, the company said.

According to statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 500,000 unemployed veterans between the ages of 18 and 64 currently live in the United States. And amid the greatest economic uncertainty since the 1930s, today’s veterans by some accounts endure a jobless rate that is nearly twice the national average.

To help combat these alarming trends, Activision Blizzard, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI), a worldwide online, PC and console video game publisher and publisher of the best-selling Call of DutyÂ® video game franchise, has established the Call of Duty Endowment (CODE). This non-profit public benefit corporation will focus its resources on assisting organizations that provide job placement and training to veterans, as well as engaging the media and public forums to raise awareness about the issue.

Broader Measure of U.S. Unemployment Stands at 17.5%

With the release of the jobs report on Friday, the broadest measure of unemployment and underemployment tracked by the Labor Department has reached its highest level in decades. If statistics went back so far, the measure would almost certainly be at its highest level since the Great Depression.

In all, more than one out of every six workers — 17.5 percent — were unemployed or underemployed in October. The previous recorded high was 17.1 percent, in December 1982.

This includes the officially unemployed, who have looked for work in the last four weeks. It also includes discouraged workers, who have looked in the past year, as well as millions of part-time workers who want to be working full time.

The official jobless rate — 10.2 percent in October, up from 9.8 percent in September — remains lower than the early 1980s peak of 10.8 percent.

Nearly 16 million people are now unemployed and more than seven million jobs have been lost

today the word jaywalking is often used as a sort of blanket justification for the dominating presence of cars on city streets. It also reflects a social bias against those people not in cars. (Note this comment in a Federal Highway Administration report: "Still, almost no one can avoid occasional pedestrian status," as if they were discussing exposure to a venereal disease.)

Looking at any number of big-city dailies over the last few weeks, one might reasonably surmise that we are in the middle of a new public-health epidemic with an old name: jaywalking.
These accounts—which are typically combined with grim statistics on pedestrian deaths and injuries, but no deeper analysis—could well leave casual readers with the impression that jaywalking is the single greatest risk to the urban pedestrian, that pedestrians wantonly solicit injuries and death with their depraved behavior, and that properly corralling pedestrians could solve all our traffic safety problems.
All of which is wrong.
the facts simply do not support the idea that jaywalking is the greatest danger pedestrians face, and that drivers should be let off the hook.
police, who largely tend to be in vehicles, often misinterpret such subtleties or exhibit a pronounced pro-driver bias
it's not uncommon to hear statements like he "came out of nowhere," when in fact the pedestrian was crossing legally
