True to form, the event began with bad folk music followed by a prayer. Not just any prayer, but a prayer by John Dear. According to his official bio, the Roman Catholic priest has been arrested 75 times “because he so fervently believes in peace.”

“Take a deep breath and breathe in that holy spirit of peace . . .

Help us end poverty and starvation and relieveable [sic] disease and end the war in Iraq and Afghanistan and Palestine and all of our wars and abolish the death penalty and torture and all our nuclear weapons. While the “spiritual progressives” gathered here in Denver for DNC convention are every bit as spacey their name suggests, their “Global Marshall Plan” is for real. The Global Marshall Plan — a.k.a. House Resolution 1078 — has 20 Democratic co-sponsors in Congress.

Scientists Slam Prince Charles' Anti-GM Ravings

The Prince of Wales has been plunged into an extraordinary row with scientists after they accused him of seriously abusing his position over his comments on GM food.

Scientists reacted angrily to the warning from the Prince in his interview in the Daily Telegraph that GM crops risked causing the world's worse environmental disaster.

MPs accused him of being a "luddite" who risked inflicting starvation on millions of people in Africa.

Prof Ottoline Leyser, a plant geneticist at the University of York who is a Fellow of the Royal Society, said: "I am disappointed with the whole environmental movement.

Johnjoe McFadden, professor of molecular genetics at the University of Surrey, said: "Prince Charles is talking biased baloney.

"Prince Charles, like many wealthy people, has no concept of the hardships of other parts of the world. He wants to retain his vision of a rural idyll by telling the poor to eat organic cake while he pours wine into the fuel tank of his sports car.

Compared to prehistoric times, the level of oxygen in the earth's atmosphere has declined by over a third and in polluted cities the decline may be more than 50%. This change in the makeup of the air we breathe has potentially serious implications for our health. Indeed, it could ultimately threaten the survival of human life on earth, according to Roddy Newman, who is drafting a new book, The Oxygen Crisis.

the planet's forest cover was at least twice what it is today, which means that forests are now emitting only half the amount of oxygen.

Desertification and deforestation are rapidly accelerating this long-term loss of oxygen sources.

The story at sea is much the same. Nasa reports that in the north Pacific ocean oxygen-producing phytoplankton concentrations are 30% lower today, compared to the 1980s. This is a huge drop in just three decades.

This oxygen starvation is reducing regional fish stocks and diminishing the food supplies of populations that are dependent on fishing.

The warfare that commenced was short and very one-sided.

Hunger manifests itself in many ways other than starvation and famine. Most poor people who battle hunger deal with chronic undernourishment and vitamin or mineral deficiencies, which result in stunted growth, weakness and heightened susceptibility to illness. ¹
Countries in which a large portion of the population battles hunger daily are usually poor and often lack the social safety nets we enjoy, such as soup kitchens, food stamps, and job training programs. When a family that lives in a poor country cannot grow enough food or earn enough money to buy food, there is nowhere to turn for help. ¹

PARANOIA and exhibitionism, two of the defining characteristics of the Soviet system, make a nasty mix. It was the Soviet Union’s desire to crow over depression-stricken America that encouraged it to let hundreds of workers, desperate for jobs and a new start in life, immigrate there in the early 1930s. Exactly how many nobody knows; almost all ended up in mass graves. Initially lauded as welcome refugees from the miseries of capitalism (and as useful specialists who might help replicate the bits of it that worked, such as factories) from 1935 onwards they became enemies of the people, infiltrators and spies. A tiny handful, such as Paul Robeson, a singer, were tolerated as propaganda trophies. The rest sank into a living Hades of torture, rape, slave labour, starvation, frostbite and death, shared with millions of others.

The horrors of the Gulag ought to be as well known as Auschwitz, but they aren’t.

The history of “The Humanity” dates back to 1992, when a group of students involved in progressive students’ politics, after completion of their post graduation from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar decided to carryout social development activities in rural areas for the socio-economic upliftment of downtrodden masses. Few issues that influenced these youths to take such steps were: abject poverty especially in Western Orissa, Tribal Districts and among the Dalit and Backward Caste Communities in Coastal Orissa, child selling, starvation deaths, hooch tragedy in Cuttack that claimed more than 400 lives and fishermen’s movement in Chilika to protect their lives, livelihoods and environment and above all rampant corruption and bad governance during that time.

Key Concepts

Global freshwater resources are threatened by rising demands from many quarters. Growing populations need ever more water for drinking, hygiene, sanitation, food production and industry. Climate change, meanwhile, is expected to contribute to droughts.

Policymakers need to figure out how to supply water without degrading the natural ecosystems that provide it.

Existing low-tech approaches can help prevent scarcity, as can ways to boost supplies, such as improved methods to desalinate water.

But governments at all levels need to start setting policies and making investments in infrastructure for water conservation now.

Scientists expect water scarcity to become more common in large part because the world’s population is rising and many people are getting richer (thus expanding demand)

Because lack of access to water can lead to starvation, disease, political instability and even armed conflict, failure to take action can have broad and grave consequences.

To cope better with the virtual starvation facing Puerto Rico due to the scant availability of food, the federal government extended the Food Pruduction War Training Program to Puerto Rico in late 1942. One of its primary objectives included the promotion of vocational education programs in agriculture. ⁶ This program targeted out-of-school youth, thus attempting to alleviate one aspect of Puerto Rico's dismal condition-- poverty due to unemployment. Having youth return to school was one way of addressing the unemployment issue without revealing the relationship of unemployment to underdevelopment. Attending school, these youths were not counted as unemployed. By the 1944-45 school year, two years from the time it was introduced, the Food Production War Training Program's enrollment had decreased from 8,641 in 1942-43 to 2,320; course offerings were also reduced from 500 in 1942-43 to 134 in 1944-45. ⁷

Ocean oxygen starvation

Oxygen-poor regions of tropical oceans are expanding as the oceans warm, limiting the areas in which predatory fishes and other marine organisms can live or enter in search of food, according to a major ongoing marine exploratory project. The phenomenon could cut overall marine biodiversity.

They have found that oxygen levels have declined during the past fifty years. The ecological impacts of this increase could have substantial biological and economical consequences, the researchers suggest.

"We found the largest decline in the tropical northeast Atlantic," explains Stramma, "whereas the changes in the eastern Indian Ocean were much less pronounced."

The researchers concede there is no way of knowing whether or not global warming alone is to blame. There are several natural processes that act on shorter timescales that might reduce oxygen levels, they point out.

Much of the recent data comes from oxygen sensors added to the 150 Argo floats

Anorexia Nervosa Disorder commonly referred to in-short as “Anorexia” is an eating disorder characterized by a loss fifteen percent or more of original body weight. Biofuels threaten food supplies, rainforest and climate - yet our leaders push them in the name of the environment

Farewell the age of reason, welcome the idiocracy. Only George Orwell could have invented - and named - the government's Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) that came into operation yesterday. It is the latest in a long line of measures intended to ease the conscience of the rich while keeping the poor miserable, in this case spectacularly so.

The consequences of the RTFO have been much trumpeted on these pages. It says enough that one car tank of bio petrol needs as much grain as it takes to feed an African for a year, or that a reported one-third of American grain production is now subsidised for conversion into biofuel. Jeremy Paxman pleaded the cause of this latest green wheeze on Monday's Newsnight, while the United Nations food expert, Jean Ziegler, screamed for it to stop: "Children are dying ... It is a crime."
