A person who spins needs two things, in addition to time: the raw material (wool, flax, cotton) that is to be spun, and a spindle or wheel with which to spin it.

Throughout history, most spinners have also used a simple device called a distaff. A distaff is a wooden board, sometimes plain but often intricately carved, to which the raw material is tied, and from which the spinner draws as she spins. (Most spinners, in all times and places as far as we know, have been women. That's why the matrilineal side of your family is called the "distaff side".)

The gruesome story of a beheaded stag whose carcass was left dressed in a T-shirt has left a community baffled and sickened.

Lying at the edge of a field was the body of a fallow deer - its head missing and its carcass fitted with a bloodied white T-shirt.

Commoners living in Burley in the New Forest had spotted the antlered animal roaming around farmland in the past few months.

But this week its mutilated body was found, a knife used to cut through its neck and human clothing stretched over the carcass in a macabre act.

Rumours were rife of links to witchcraft, as Burley is known to have historical connections with the occult.

A spokesman said: "There is nothing to suggest that there is any link with witchcraft and to do so would be wild speculation.

"It is unusual in so far as the head has been removed and someone has put a T-shirt on its torso.

Prince William was under fire again after it emerged that he had landed his £10million RAF helicopter in girlfriend Kate Middleton's back garden during an official military exercise.

Miss Middleton and her parents are said to have watched in delight as the second in line to the throne practised a series of take-offs and landings in the paddock of their sprawling detached home in Bucklebury, Berkshire, earlier this month.

Details of the two-hour stunt emerged just days after the prince was heavily criticised for using another Chinook to fly himself and his brother Harry to a stag weekend on the Isle of Wight.

The revelations have raised questions about the way in which the RAF has allowed the prince to fit his "intensive" four-month training course around his social life.

A mythical and ghostly creature has appeared in the wilds of the Scottish Highlands -- and has been caught on camera.

The rare white stag, from the red deer species, is believed to be among just a tiny handful living in Britain, according to a conservation group.

White stags are seen as a magical and powerful force in many mythologies.

The animal's ghostly glow comes from a recessive gene which causes leucism, a condition which reduces the normal brown coloring in hair and skin. They are not albinos, which have red eyes due to lack of pigment.

In Celtic traditions, white stags represent messengers from the afterlife. Arthurian legend has it that the creature can never be caught -- King Arthur's pursuit of the animal represents mankind's spiritual quest.

The last official recording of a white red stag in Britain, not to be confused with the more common white fallow deer, was last October when the body of one was found decapitated on the moors between Devon and Cornwall.

"To see him amongst the other stags was truly thrilling because he does look like a ghost: you do a double-take," Trust Partnership Manager Fran Lockhart, who filmed the stag, told Reuters.

The animal's ghostly glow comes from a recessive gene which causes leucism, a condition which reduces the normal brown colouring in hair and skin. They are not albinos, which have red eyes due to lack of pigment.

It is also said that for those who set eyes on the animal, a momentous moment is near.

The animal has been seen with other red deer by a member of the John Muir Trust, which has kept its location a secret to protect it from poachers.

Fran Lockhart, partnership manager for the trust, caught the young Highland deer on camera. She described it as "ghost-like".

The trust said white deer were potent figures in the mythology of many cultures.

Celts considered them to be messengers from the otherworld.

They are closely identified with unicorns and their appearance is said to herald some profound change in the lives of those who encounter them.

White deer are often mistakenly thought to be albinos.

The trust said their unusual appearance was caused by leucism, a rare genetic pattern that causes a reduction in the pigment in the animal's hair and skin.

Unlike albinos who characteristically have red eyes, deer with leucism have normal colouring in their eyes.
