A rule of thumb is a homemade recipe for making a guess. It is an easy-to-remember guide that falls somewhere between a mathematical formula and a shot in the dark. A farmer, for instance, knows to plant his corn when oak leaves are the size of squirrels' ears. An economics professor knows from sad experience that inviting more than 25 percent of the guests for a university dinner party from the economics department ruins the conversation. clipper's remarks: She go stabbed by someone who meticulously skin a rabbit and cut it half leaving a perfect schull and a spinal cord attched to its legs. My dog was impaled by a sharp 2 inch blade - it was clean - if my German Shepard hadn't appeared barking and jumping hysterically I fear what could of happened. By the time I got out side no one was around but our little rows of little houses with gardens & primed lawns, pools & BQ's
there is a psychotic person budding and coming into his or hers own. Very scary. Lock your doors neighbors.
BTW my dogs have killed rabbits & squirrels but they kill them leaving teeth marks ,once the belly was torn. They always just want to show me- look what I got you. Not this time,
they were hesitant to go near it. something freaky happened out there in my backyard.

Still, beauty can be its own excuse for being. The most spectacular tree you can have in a garden is the weeping Higan cherry, prunus subhirtella pendula. This weeping cherry has small black inconspicuous fruits favored by squirrels, but it can only reproduce with ease by cloning. The light pink flowers, almost white, cover the branches before the leaves emerge. The branches lean over to touch the ground, or in many Japanese gardens, the lake or pond.

We don't ask azaleas to make nuts, or peacocks to lay delicious eggs. And yet, the fact that it's called a cherry tree does kind of get your hopes up.

Russian squirrel pack 'kills dog'

Squirrels have bitten to death a stray dog which was barking at them in a Russian park, local media report.

Passers-by were too late to stop the attack by the black squirrels in a village in the far east, which reportedly lasted about a minute.

They are said to have scampered off at the sight of humans, some carrying pieces of flesh.

Local people suggest hunger is driving squirrels to extremes

"They literally gutted the dog," local journalist Anastasia Trubitsina told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.

A "big" stray dog was nosing about the trees and barking at squirrels hiding in branches overhead when a number of them suddenly descended and attacked, reports say.

Komosmolskaya Pravda notes that in a previous incident this autumn chipmunks terrorised cats in a part of the territory.

SOUTHWEST RANCHES, Fla. - Christina Brownlow unfolds the welcome mat whenever a family of raccoons, foxes or squirrels strays into her yard.

With its canopy of fruit trees and foliage, and colorful gardens of butterflies, Brownlow's 2.5-acre property has been certified as a wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation, which promotes coexistence with animals whose natural habitat is rapidly disappearing.

"How do you define a habitat? It's like a hotel, a place where wildlife can stop and rest, eat and go on their way," said Brownlow, an adult-education teacher who grew up in the Southwest Ranches, Fla., home her parents bought 40 years ago.

There are 103,000 certified wildlife habitats nationwide, with Florida leading the nation, according to Roxanne Paul, the federation's operations coordinator. In Broward, there are 1,614; most of those are backyards, but some are schools and even businesses.

Woodland birds on route to extinction as numbers dive

A suite of woodland species, from the nightingale to the spotted flycatcher, fell by more than 50 per cent between 1994 and last year, according to the report of the annual Breeding Bird Survey, run by the British Trust for Ornithology, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee. The willow tit has declined by 77 per cent over the period and is extinct over much of Britain. But other declines are nearly as bad: since 1994, wood warbler has declined by 67 per cent, nightingale by 60 per cent, spotted flycatcher by 59 per cent and pied flycatcher by 54 per cent. Lesser spotted woodpecker has declined so much that it is too rare to monitor accurately on a national basis.

Factors being considered include predation by grey squirrels or great spotted woodpeckers (not proved), the decline in the form of woodland management known as coppicing (possible) and the huge rise in the numbers of deer (much more likely).

The other factor is migration.

How's this for cuteness?

There can't be too many things cuter than a red panda baby.

The Knoxville Zoo has a pair of brand new residents. Zoo officials confirm two baby red pandas were born earlier in the week.

The Knoxville Zoo is also home to the oldest red panda in captivity, Flo, age 18.

To ensure their survival, the babies will be hand raised by Sandy Heiliker, the Valley Zoo’s Animal Health Technologist.

It seems unthinkable, but for the first time in human history, ice is on course to disappear entirely from the North Pole this year.

The disappearance of the Arctic sea ice, making it possible to reach the Pole sailing in a boat through open water, would be one of the most dramatic – and worrying – examples of the impact of global warming on the planet. Scientists say the ice at 90 degrees north may well have melted away by the summer.

If it happens, it raises the prospect of the Arctic nations being able to exploit the valuable oil and mineral deposits below these a bed which have until now been impossible to extract because of the thick sea ice above.

Seven UFOs Filmed over Liverpool

A Liverpool man claims to have seen several UFOs hovering in the sky around the city and filmed them on his phone.

Vince Pybis said he saw a light above the bushes in Sefton Park and got his phone to film it, by which time six more had appeared.

"I'm a sceptic, I didn't believe in UFOs. But until you've actually seen one - well I saw seven - then I thought, they are out there."

Last month declassified government files revealed a letter sent to a secret agent from a man in Wirral claiming he had been in physical and psychic contact with an extra terrestrial called Algar.

He wrote: "I have had a relationship with Algar since 1958 and it continued until 1981 when he was killed by another race of beings."
