NASA to Start Irradiating Monkeys

Oct. 29, 2009 -- NASA is stepping up its space radiation studies with a round of experiments that for the first time in decades will use monkeys as subjects.

The point of the experiments is to understand how the harsh radioactive environment of space affects human bodies and behavior and what countermeasures can be developed to make long-duration spaceflight safe for travelers beyond Earth's protective magnetic shield.

For the new study, 18 to 28 squirrel monkeys will be exposed to a low dose of the type of radiation that astronauts traveling to Mars can expect to encounter.

Scientists are particularly interested in studying how the radiation impacts the monkeys' central nervous systems and behaviors over time.

Scientists have unveiled a tiny dinosaur weighing less than a kilogram and measuring around 70 centimetres long, making it the second smallest ever found.

The recently unearthed fossil is the size of a squirrel and would have dined on fruit and insects 150 million years ago.

Scientists say Fruitadens haagarorum is the world's smallest known ornithischian dinosaur, a group that included horned, duck-billed and armored dinosaurs, along with many other diverse species.

"The smallest known dinosaurs - just slightly smaller than Fruitadens - are from China and they represent some of the closest relatives of birds," says co-author Dr Luis Chiappe.

The Great Oaf-Bound North can be an inhospitable place come wintertime as these geese are discovering.

Squirrel nut stowage rates are at an alltime high this fall, which has many worried that certain areas of North America may be in for a nasty winter. These stowage rates are higher than 150% of normal in the vast Great Oaf-bound North region, which as we know encompasses North and South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

This has raised concerns that this region, which typically experiences bleak, harsh winters in a normal year, will experience an exceptionally brutal winter this year, if these small, furry animals are to be believed.

"Squirrels may be, well..squirrely, " sez Biff Stoatson of the Oaf-bound Vole & Vermin Center in Brainerd, Minnesota, "but they're not dishonest creatures, as a rule. They may steal birdseed from the feeder in your back lawn, but when apprehended, they're not going to sit there and lie about it. Moles on the other hand..."
