In-Q-Tel, the investment arm of the CIA and the wider intelligence community, is putting cash into Visible Technologies, a software firm that specializes in monitoring social media. It’s part of a larger movement within the spy services to get better at using ”open source intelligence” — information that’s publicly available, but often hidden in the flood of TV shows, newspaper articles, blog posts, online videos and radio reports generated every day.

Visible crawls over half a million web 2.0 sites a day, scraping more than a million posts and conversations taking place on blogs, online forums, Flickr, YouTube, Twitter and Amazon.

Then Visible “scores” each post, labeling it as positive or negative, mixed or neutral. It examines how influential a conversation or an author is.

Squid vs. scuba: Invasion of jumbo squid off San Diego coast spooks and intrigues divers

SAN DIEGO - Jumbo flying squid - aggressive 5-foot(1.5-meter)-long sea monsters with razor-sharp beaks and toothy tentacles - have invaded the shallow waters off San Diego, spooking scuba divers and washing up dead on tourist-packed beaches.

The carnivorous calamari, which can grow up to 100 pounds (45 kilograms), came up from the depths last week and swarms of them roughed up unsuspecting divers. Some divers report tentacles enveloping their masks and yanking at their cameras and gear.

Stories of too-close encounters with the alien-like cephalopods have chased many veteran divers out of the water and created a whirlwind of excitement among the rest, who are torn between their personal safety and the once-in-a-lifetime chance to swim with the deep-sea giants.

Other divers have reported squid pulling at their masks and gear and roughing them up.

China accused over global computer spy ring

An enormous electronic espionage programme run from servers in China has been used to spy on computers in more than 100 countries, according to two reports published at the weekend.

The reports, published by the universities of Cambridge and Toronto, detail a "murky realm" where cyber spooks infiltrate email, take over humble desktop computers and use them to spy on organisations, individuals and governments.

The reports name the system GhostNet, and claim that it has been used to attack governments in south and south-east Asia as well as the offices of the Dalai Lama. In two years, the reports suggest, the operation infiltrated 1,295 computers in 103 countries.

"What Chinese spooks did in 2008, Russian crooks will do in 2010 and even low-budget criminals from less developed countries will follow in due course," conclude the Cambridge authors of The Snooping Dragon: Social Malware Surveillance of the Tibetan Movement.

Series four of Doctor Who, transmitted last year on BBC One, has been shortlisted in the Best Drama Series category at the British Academy Television Awards (BAFTAs), the UK's most prestigious television accolades. This is the second time that the programme has been nominated for this award - series one was nominated and won the category at the 2006 ceremony.

The BAFTA website shows that Doctor Who has been nominated alongside Channel 4's Shameless and BBC One stablemates Spooks and Wallander. Spooks and Shameless were also nominated the last time that Doctor Who won the category.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony held in the Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday the 26th of April.

Facebook - the CIA conspiracy

Facebook has 20 million users worldwide, is worth billions of dollars and, if internet sources are to be believed, was started by the CIA.

The social networking phenomenon started as a way of American college students to keep in touch. It is rapidly catching up with MySpace, and has left others like Bebo in its wake.

The CIA is, though, using a Facebook group to recruit staff for its very sexy sounding National Clandestine Service.

Checking out the job ads does require a Facebook login, so if you haven't joined the site - or are worried that CIA spooks will start following you home from work -check them out on the agency's own site.

Facebook's first round of venture capital funding ($US500,000) came from former Paypal CEO Peter Thiel. Author of anti-multicultural tome 'The Diversity Myth', he is also on the board of radical conservative group VanguardPAC.

Tehran: Iran brings down Israeli spy network

Iranian security forces have arrested members of an Israeli spy cell that had been conducting data collection operations in the country.

"The security and intelligence division of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) recently identified a network that was spying on the country's military organizations," Fars news agency quoted the chief IRGC commander, Brigadier General Mohammad-Ali Jafari, as saying on Monday.

"The network's link with Mossad was established after extensive intelligence and tracking operations. Members of the cell were arrested during an operation," Brig. Gen. Jafari said.

He added that sophisticated communication systems and other modern equipment had been confiscated during the crackdown.

According to a senior Iranian counter-espionage official, Tehran has become involved in a 'serious intelligence war' with Tel Aviv.

Spies Launch 'Cyber-Behavior" Profiling

A while back, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) said it wanted to start reviewing wannabe spies' "cyber behavior," before they handed the spooks security clearances. Suspect activities might include "social network usage," "compulsive internet use," "distribution of pirated materials," and "online contact with foreign nationals," the ODNI said.

But first, the Office wanted to get a "better understanding" of "which specific cyber-behaviors are normative, acceptable, or favorable." Then comes a look into how "risky IT activities or problematic cyber behaviors" match up with real-life "personality factors or other individual traits, characteristics or behaviors [that] can serve as risk or resilience indicators."

Well, let the profiling begin. The ODNI recently handed out $800,000 to researchers to figure out whether hopping on World of Warcraft or Facebook "suggests an unwillingness to abide by rules." Get back to us on that, spyboys.

PHILIP DORLING has been a journalist for just three months. He's made quite an impact. So much so that when he and his wife were about to wrestle their two children out of their Canberra house and into the car last Tuesday morning, eight agents from the Australian Federal Police lobbed on their doorstep armed with search warrants.

Dated September 17 and signed by the Australian Capital Territory's Chief Magistrate, Ron Cahill, the warrants authorised the agents to search the journalist's home. For the next five hours they went through his house and his rubbish and took away a laptop, a mobile phone, a diary, a few random documents and a copy of The Canberra Times dated June 14 — more than three months earlier.

Washington Dispatch: Four years ago, the candidate called the CIA a "rogue organization"; now he's advised by a former Chalabi promoter and Agency basher. No wonder the spooks are spooked.

Scheunemann's record, they argue, encapsulates everything wrong with the past eight years of Bush leadership on intelligence issues, from a penchant for foreign policy freelancing and secret contacts with unreliable fabricators, to neoconservatives' disdain for the perceived bureaucratic timidity of the CIA and State Department, to their avowed hostility for diplomacy with adversaries.
