Christian Bale off the hook in assault case

LONDON (AP) — Christian Bale won't be charged in an alleged assault on his mother and sister, in part because they didn't want to press the matter but also for lack of sufficient evidence, prosecutors said Thursday.

The service said in a statement that it treats domestic incidents seriously, but feels it's important "that the views of complainants are also taken into account when making decisions in such cases."

Bale, who denies the allegation, said through his spokeswoman, Jennifer Allen, that he was relieved the issue had been settled. The actor "hopes to put the matter firmly behind him" and will be providing no further comment, Allen said in a statement released by Bale's lawyers.

The Wales-born actor first made a splash in 1987 as the child star of Steven Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun." He has played dark and sometimes sinister roles in such films as "American Psycho," "The Machinist" and "Batman Begins."

After he bailed over Darfur (did he ever intend to follow through with the gig in the first place?) the producers stuck with their script and made the best show they could.

So if some CGI shots and some lip-syncing found their way into the spectacle why is anyone surprised?

Don't get mad about the cute girl who can't really sing. Get mad about the the 12-year old gymnasts. The latter have a strict code to follow that is set out by the IOC. The former is just show-biz.

Steven Spielberg still working on Reliance

Steven Spielberg still hopes to strike an agreement by Labor Day on a $550 million deal with Reliance Big Entertainment to help fund a re-invented DreamWorks, but discussions with studios over a new distribution arrangement could stretch into September.

In fact, much needs to be done on various fronts as the iconic hyphenate seeks to take back ownership control of his movie projects.

A $750 million loan component of DreamWorks' new business plan would take another 30 days to complete, once a lead bank is selected. And besides picking a distribution partner, there's the question of whether that studio also would take a small stake in the new DreamWorks.

Shia LaBeouf arrested for drink driving

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - "Indiana Jones" star Shia LaBeouf was arrested on suspicion of drink driving after an auto accident in which he was injured early Sunday, a police official said on Sunday.

LaBeouf was driving a vehicle that collided with another vehicle at 3 a.m. in Hollywood, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Scott Wolf said.

"He subsequently injured his head, knee and hand and was hospitalized," Wolf said.

Wolf said LaBeouf was booked for misdemeanour DUI (driving under the influence) and then released.

LaBeouf's passenger and the driver of the other vehicle sustained minor injuries, Wolf said, adding that he did not know their identities.

The accident occurred when LaBeouf made a left turn in front of the other vehicle, causing a collision in which his car rolled over, Wolf said.

LaBeouf, a protege of director Steven Spielberg, starred in this summer's box office hit "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."

The Wilhelm scream is a near famous stock sound effect first used in 1951 for the film Distant Drums

The Wilhelm's revival came from Star Wars series sound designer Ben Burtt, who tracked down the original recording (which he found as a studio reel labeled "Man being eaten by alligator"). Although Distant Drums was the first known use of the sound, Burtt named it after "Pvt. Wilhelm", a minor character who emitted the same scream in the 1953 film The Charge at Feather River.

Since then, it's been used in over 130 movies; Spielberg and Lucas use it an awful lot (and are responsible for the popularization of the kinda-cheesey scream).

NEW DELHI: Hollywood loves to show outside investors just how the movie business really works. But some of the people behind Bollywood in India believe they have something to teach Hollywood about making movies.

Reliance Entertainment, part of an Indian conglomerate controlled by the telecommunications and finance mogul Anil Ambani, is in talks to finance Steven Spielberg and David Geffen in a new venture. The company has also recently signed production deals with several Hollywood directors like Jay Roach and Chris Columbus and stars like Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Jim Carrey.

Unlike other foreign investors who have stepped toward Hollywood - and taken some grief for their efforts - Reliance has deep experience in the film business. Ambani is a relative newcomer to the movie game, but his wife, Tina Munim, is a former Bollywood star.

Surgeons may get Minority Report-style display

In Steven Spielberg's movie Minority Report, the agents of a police state monitor people's lives to stop crimes before they are committed, using giant computer screens that they operate using mid-air hand gestures. But in the real world surgeons, not spies, may be the first to handle data in this way. It appears to be a great way to avoid hospital-acquired infections like MRSA, which can easily be spread via a keyboard or mouse.

Juan Wachs and colleagues at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, in Israel, describe a screen and gesture-recognition system that allows surgeons to flip back and forth through radiology images, such as MRI and CT scans, by simply groping in mid-air. Their system, called Gestix, comprises a colour video camera above a flat, widescreen monitor placed next to the operating table. The video signal from the camera is fed to a PC, where software trained to detect the colour of the surgeon's gloves tracks the movements of their hand.

Stan Winston, the Oscar-winning special effects, creature and makeup artist whose innovative creations include the full-scale animatronic dinosaurs in "Jurassic Park" and the futuristic Terminators, has died. He was 62.

Winston died Sunday at his home in Malibu after a seven-year battle with myeloma, a Stan Winston Studio spokeswoman said.

During a film and TV career that spanned four decades, Winston collaborated with such filmmakers as Steven Spielberg and James Cameron and worked on some of his generation's most memorable films.

He won four Oscars, for the visual effects in "Jurassic Park," "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" and "Aliens" and for makeup on "T2." He also earned Oscar noms for his work on "AI: Artificial Intelligence," "The Lost World: Jurassic Park," "Batman Returns," "Edward Scissorhands," "Predator" and "Heartbeeps." He was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2001.

Consider 2004’s Spider-Man 2, a sequel far better than the original. The movie is a fable about duty and heroism. The movie resonated powerfully with the public, grossing a whopping $374 million domestically, and it took in another $400 million or so overseas. Factor in DVD sales, and you’re getting close to a billion-dollar movie.

The Incredibles affectionately embraces the bourgeois family, flaws and all. The Parrs have their difficulties: teenager Violet is sullen, the kids fight, Mom and Dad bicker, Bob hates his drab insurance job, but for the Parr kids, the family bond is all-important.

Pixar’s 2003 runaway winner Finding Nemo, the movie shows children “what adults are supposed to do,” writes author Frederica Mathewes-Green on National Review Online—“to be brave and self-sacrificing, to defend children even at risk to themselves, to give, even in the face of ingratitude.”

It was hard to parody Hollywood’s loony limousine liberalism this summer

David Koepp, co-writer of Steven Spielberg’s remake of War of the Worlds, likened the movie’s ravaging aliens to the U.S. military in Iraq.

But guess what: ever more Americans are shunning Hollywood’s wares—and disgust with Left Coast politics, both on and off screen, clearly plays a part. In a time of declining moviegoing, what gets people out to the theaters, it turns out, are conservative movies—conservative not so much politically but culturally and morally, focusing on the battle between good and evil, the worth of heroism and self-sacrifice, the indispensability of family values and martial honor, and the existence of Truth.

There’s no question Hollywood is reeling. Film attendance is down a wrenching 12 percent from last year, and a May USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll found that nearly half of American adults go to movies less often than they did in 2000.

'Indiana Jones' graphics meant to go unnoticed

Even having spent months slaving over some 450 computer-generated images for the just-released Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the admittedly jaded Hayden Landis still gets excited when he hears that theme song.

"The little kid in you comes out," said Landis, computer graphics supervisor on the film, recalling the music in the opening of the movie trailer. "I grew up with Indiana Jones."

It's that very nostalgic feeling that Landis and his team at Lucasfilm's Industrial Light & Magic tried to create with the film's visual effects--at director Steven Spielberg's request, Landis said.

Spielberg "wanted to make sure it looked like all the other" Indy films, Landis explained Friday in an interview with CNET News.com here at ILM's headquarters. Spielberg even shot the film with one of the very lenses used for the first Indiana Jones film, Raiders of the Lost Ark, which was released 27 years ago.

Hollywood super producer Steven Spielberg is preparing to launch a new social network, we’ve heard from multiple sources. The focus will be on users who’ve had or who are interested in sharing paranormal and extraterrestrial experiences. The new social network may also have original video content investigating alleged ghost and UFO stories.

Spielberg has always had a love for ghost and UFO stories. His movies include Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Poltergeist (1982), E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Casper (1995), Men in Black (1997), The Haunting (1999), War of the Worlds (2005) and the upcoming Interstellar (2009). His first movie, at 16, was a 140-minute science fiction adventure called Firelight (which later inspired Close Encounters). Add to those titles a score of other sci-fi movies.

The first Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, was released in 1981, followed by Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in 1984 and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989. Together they have grossed £600million.

This time he is battling the Russians, with Cate Blanchett playing a Soviet agent. Karen Allen returns as Marion Ravenwood, Indy's love interest from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

There are also roles for Britons Ray Winstone, John Hurt and Jim Broadbent.
