3 Telescopes Combine for Stunning Milky Way Photo

A giant composite image of the Milky Way's center has been taken by NASA's three Great Observatories — the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes and the Chandra X-ray Observatory.

The image, unveiled by NASA today, was made to celebrate the International Year of Astronomy, 400 years after Galileo first turned his telescope to the heavens.

The pictures of our galaxy's hub combines a near-infrared view from the Hubble Space Telescope, an infrared view from the Spitzer Space Telescope, and an X-ray view from the Chandra X-ray Observatory into one multiwavelength picture.

Experts from all three observatories carefully assembled the final image from large mosaic photo surveys taken by each telescope. This composite image provides one of the most detailed views ever of our galaxy's mysterious core.

More than 150 planetariums, museums, nature centers, libraries, and schools across the country have received a giant 6-foot-by-3-foot print of the stunning image.

A terrace house done in a Heritage Art Deco style, with light open plan living and a nice balance betweeen nature and contemporary living. Fresh. To me, the best part about this house is that it’s a renovation. We’ve got no “before” pics here, but I doubt it compared at all to this magnificent living space. After that it’s gotta be the gigantic light space dividing the two sections of the house, wrapped in aluminum wall cladding absolutely pouring light into the entire abode. Just lovely.

It’s what’s called a “light well” – just fab, right? In this outdoor area is the out door pool and frangipani garden. And maybe you could throw a nice set of seats in there and have a little lemonade?

The TV and music appliances are all hidden. Try and find them. They’re in recesses in the wall revealed by the touch of a button or by the flip of the hand: they’re all behind the giant murals.

The world is not coming to an end on December 21, 2012, US space agency NASA insists.

The latest big screen offering from Sony Pictures, 2012, arrives in theatres today.

The $US200 million production about the end of the world is based on internet rumours and myths backed by the Mayan calendar.

The film claims that the end of time will come when an obscure planet - Nibiru - heads toward and collides with Earth.

The planet was supposedly discovered by the Sumerians, according to claims by pseudo-scientists, paranormal activity enthusiasts and internet theorists.

Some websites accuse NASA of concealing the truth on the wayward planet's existence, but the US space agency has denounced such stories as an "internet hoax."

"There is no factual basis for these claims," NASA said in a question-and-answer post on its website.

If such a collision were real "astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye," it added.

A never-before-seen view of the turbulent heart of our Milky Way galaxy is being unveiled by NASA on Nov. 10. This event will commemorate the 400 years since Galileo first turned his telescope to the heavens in 1609.

Caprica – Battlestar Galactica’s Long Awaited Offspring

For those of you who don’t know, Caprica is a TV series set in the same universe as the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica, but the events it portrays occur 58 years before the events in the main series.

It is set on Caprica rather than in space in an attempt to have a more universal appeal than the Battlestar series. Series producers feel that the ‘war in space’ format had a largely male following whereas Caprica is looking to have an equally male and female audience.

Caprica tells the story of how the human colonials created the robotic Cylons that would later attempt to destroy their masters in retaliation for their enslavement.

Whilst the extended pilot has been available for digital download and on DVD since April of 2009, the series itself which is to consist of the pilot and 18 episodes is not due to hit our screens until January of 2010.

Imagine this. At a time of political turmoil, a charismatic, telegenic new leader arrives virtually out of nowhere. He offers a message of hope and reconciliation based on compromise and promises to marshal technology for a better future that will include universal health care.

The news media swoons in admiration -- one simpering anchorman even shouts at a reporter who asks a tough question: “Why don't you show some respect?!!” The public is likewise smitten, except for a few nut cases who circulate batty rumors on the Internet about the leader's origins and intentions. The leader, undismayed, offers assurances that are soothing, if also just a tiny bit condescending: “Embracing change is never easy.”

ABC's 'V' mini-series,

is “nominally a rousing sci-fi space opera about alien invaders bent on the conquest (and digestion) of all humanity,” but “it's also a barbed commentary on Obamamania that will infuriate the President's supporters and delight his detractors,” Miami Herald TV critic Glenn Garvin asserted in a review distributed by the McClatchy/Tribune news service and run in Tuesday's Chicago Tribune, among other papers.

Though the leader of the aliens, in Garvin's words, “is secretly a totalitarian space lizard who's come here to eat us,” the plot has a featured character, a TV journalist, aiding the effort. “Some welcome their arrival,” USA Today's Gary Levin recounted, “but the suspicious form a resistance movement, which leads the visitors' charismatic leader, Anna (Morena Baccarin), to enlist an ambitious TV reporter (Scott Wolf) as a propaganda tool.”

IT MAY sound like sci-fi, but Japan is dead serious: by 2030 it wants to collect solar power in space and zap it down to Earth, using laser beams or microwaves.

The government has picked a group of companies and a research team to turn the ambitious, multi-billion-dollar dream of unlimited clean energy into reality.

Now Japan's bold plan is the Space Solar Power System (SSPS), in which arrays of photovoltaic dishes several square kilometres in size would hover in geostationary orbit outside the Earth's atmosphere.

NASA Reproduces a Building Block of Life in Laboratory

NASA scientists studying the origin of life have reproduced uracil, a key component of our hereditary material, in the laboratory. They discovered that an ice sample containing pyrimidine exposed to ultraviolet radiation under space-like conditions produces this essential ingredient of life.

“We have demonstrated for the first time that we can make uracil, a component of RNA, non-biologically in a laboratory under conditions found in space,” said Michel Nuevo, research scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif. “We are showing that these laboratory processes, which simulate occurrences in outer space, can make a fundamental building block used by living organisms on Earth.”

Nuevo is the lead author of a research paper titled “Formation of Uracil from the Ultraviolet Photo-Irradiation of Pyrimidine in Pure Water Ices,” Astrobiology vol. 9 no. 7, published Oct. 1, 2009.

It's all about stalling and doing nothing while Iran steadily moves on with it's nuclear programs. Why not just give them the dang bomb, shut down the IAEA and the UN, eliminate all diplomatic positions and end the charade. Everyone knows that Iran is NOT going to stop its nuclear weapons development.

U.S. can give Iran space to accept atom deal: official

The United States is willing to give Iran time to decide whether to accept a U.N. draft deal that is meant to defuse nuclear tensions with world powers but has drawn Iranian objections, a U.S. diplomat said on Monday.

Addressing Iran's misgivings over sending low-enriched uranium (LEU) abroad before it receives reactor fuel in return, the U.N. nuclear agency chief has suggested Iran place the LEU in a friendly third country pending arrival of the fuel.

A senior Iranian official rejected the idea at the weekend.

But Tehran has yet to give a full, official reply on the proposal

"There have been communications back and forth. We are in extra innings in these negotiations. That's sometimes the way these things go," said Glyn Davies, U.S. ambassador to the IAEA.
