Apple tries to de-bug iPhone

Apple (AAPL) acknowledged Tuesday that a software update for the iPhone partly fixes the connection snags that have caused a global firestorm for the new iPhone 3G.

Though mum on details, Apple spokeswoman Jennifer Bowcock said on Tuesday, "The software update improves communication with 3G networks."

TECHNOLOGY LIVE: More iPhone fixes on the way?

In recent days, customers around the globe have complained about dropped calls and other connection issues with the latest iPhone. Such drops apparently occur when calls are handed off from the 3G network to a slower network, such as AT&T's Edge, when 3G isn't available.

News reports placed at least part of the blame on faulty 3G chipsets from German chipmaker Infineon Technologies (IFX). If it is a chip problem, it's uncertain if all the connection troubles can be solved by Apple's latest software update alone.

Comment spam can be extremely annoying, but there are fortunately several techniques which can be used to fight it. Ideally, you can reach a solution which filters out most of your comment spam without inconveniencing readers. You may want to think about integrating several techniques to stop spammers from several angles.

The first step you can take is using a spam filter

You can also utilize IP banning software. Several companies have created so-called “blacklists” of IPs which are routinely used for spam

you can require all users to register before they post comments, which can reduce the amount of spam which filters through. You can also use a CAPTCHA, a tool which issues a challenge to each commenter.

Firefox Clipboards Hijacked!

Computer security firms are warning about an attack that hijacks the clipboard where copied text is stored.

The attack puts a hard-to-delete weblink into the clipboard that, if followed, leads people to a website selling fake security software.

The code that inserts the link has been found in flash-based adverts seen on many legitimate websites.

The attack on the clipboard has hit both Windows and Mac users of the Firefox web browser.

It seems to work by exploiting Adobe Flash files used to make display adverts in such a way as to endlessly flush the clipboard of other text and constantly re-insert the malicious link in its place.

Getting rid of the link has proved problematic. Some report resorting to re-booting their machine to free themselves of it but others stopped it by killing the Firefox process thread.

Those following the link get taken to a page advertising a bogus anti-virus security program that erroneously tells people their machine is riddled with malicious software.

Advocates of open source software have hailed a court ruling protecting its use even though it is given away free.

The US federal appeals court move overturned a lower court decision involving free software used in model trains that a hobbyist put online.

The court has now said conditions of an agreement called the Artistic Licence were enforceable under copyright law.

"For non-lawgeeks, this won't seem important but this is huge," said Stanford Law Professor Larry Lessig.

"In non-technical terms, the Court has held that free licences set conditions on the use of copyrighted work. When you violate the condition, the licence disappears, meaning you're simply a copyright infringer.

"This is a very important victory."
