We’ve had fun in the office reading the rumors and speculation, but it’s time to spill the beans:

As of today, you can play full-length tracks and entire albums for free on the Last.fm website.

Something we’ve wanted for years—for people who visit Last.fm to be able to play any track for free—is now possible. With the support of the folks behind EMI, Sony BMG, Universal and Warner—and the artists they work with—plus thousands of independent artists and labels, we’ve made the biggest legal collection of music available to play online for free, the way we believe it should be.

Tags: last.fm, music, web2.0, internet, mp3, community, socialinternet

<clipSource>http://blog.last.fm/2008/01/23/free-the-music</clipSource>

Top tools for twitters

clipped by: ghiberti
clipper's remarks: Awful headline I know (I wrote it) - the article's better (I didn't)

Clip Source: www.readwriteweb.com

The top 8 methods used to publish are as

When I first discovered Twitter, my reaction was much like many peoples'. Social software is a whole new world in many ways and people everywhere are trying to figure out how to design effective and compelling applications. I offer for your consideration today three recent attempts to articulate social software design best practices. Let's discuss.

The recommendations include things like "focus on the 30-second experience; before distracting the user with expert features or sending invites, slow down and give the user a simpler taste of what your application is about." That's good advice that a lot of startups could benefit from considering.

Factory Joe, also know as Chris Messina of San Francisco consultancy CitizenAgency when he takes his cape off, maintains an excellent collection of screenshots on Flickr. He saves all kinds of good examples of contemporary interface design in the social software world. I point people to it all the time, now you can too.

Tags: visualization, socialinternet, opensocial, google, web2.0, ui, design

<clipSource>http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/social_software_best_practices.php</clipSource>

"Virtual" crime?

clipped by: ghiberti

Clip Source: www.guardian.co.uk

Screen grabbers - crime hits the digital frontier

As a teenager is arrested for stealing pixels, Victor Keegan reports on the rise of the 3-D 'virtual worlds' that could transform the way we work, play, shop and communicate

A 17-year-old Dutch teenager was arrested this week on suspicion of stealing furniture worth £2,800 from a hotel room. Four other teenagers were also questioned about the offence. It is believed they moved the stolen furniture into their own hotel rooms. Such a minor incident might not have merited a paragraph in the local paper had it not been for one extraordinary detail of the case: the crime happened not in real life but in a "virtual" hotel in the three-dimensional world Habbo Hotel, a children's game that only exists on the internet.

Tags: secondlife, virtual, crime, internet, socialinternet, avatars

<clipSource>http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2007/nov/17/internet.crime</clipSource>

Linkedin for work, facebook for play?

clipped by: ghiberti

Clip Source: www.readwriteweb.com

In the heyday of the Facebook hype (it seems so long ago now!), Facebook was going to eat LinkedIn’s lunch. Based on recent experience, I don’t think so.

I recently had reason to use LinkedIn seriously, using my existing network to tap into a market that I had not previously been exposed to. I had not used LinkedIn since the early days, so this was my first serious update.

Limitations on LinkedIn's Value

1. LinkedIn mirrors real world relationships but does not change them. I assume the same is true on Facebook. More to the point, attempts to use LinkedIn to change real world relationships can be counterproductive.

2. I can bye-pass the network and avoid paying the fees. The 'professional' users of LinkedIn tend to be sales people or recruiters. In other words people who network for a living. They are the ones who will pay the fees that LinkedIn charges:

Tags: linkedin, facebook, networking, api, socialinternet, web2.0, internet

<clipSource>http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/linkedin_and_the_future_of_business_social_networks.php</clipSource>

Independent opinions? upload your movies here

clipped by: ghiberti

Clip Source: www.freedocumentaries.org

At freedocumentaries.org we believe strongly that in order to have a true democracy, there has to be a
free flow of easily available information. Unfortunately, many important perspectives, opinions and
facts do not make it to our televisions or cinemas (you can watch movies in our media category if you want to know why).

For this reason we decided to start freedocumentaries.org, a site where anyone with an internet connection can
watch a movie and educate themselves or simply explore another perspective whenever they want.

Providing films free not only allows anyone to watch a film but it also allows curious people who think they
may disagree with a filmmaker to watch a film without worrying that they are giving money to someone who's views they don't
              agree with.

Freedocumentaires.org also allows independent filmmakers to have their message heard to markets which they wouldn't reach easily.

Tags: opinion, video, sharing, socialinternet, web2.0, internet

<clipSource>http://www.freedocumentaries.org/about.php</clipSource>

drag and drop mashup builder

clipped by: ghiberti

Clip Source: ec2-72-44-42-194.z-2.compute-1.amazonaws.com:8080

In 1975, Frederick Brooks wrote a classic book on software project management called
The Mythical Man-Month.
In the book, he famously argued that adding more people to a development project will hinder rather than help to get things done faster.
The reason is that having more people working on the project introduces a non-linear overhead in communication.

languages (Java, PHP, Python and Ruby), rich libraries, and unprecedented infrastructure services like those from Amazon, we are arriving
at yet another evolutionary step. Digg, del.icio.us, YouTube and other poster children of the new web era were developed by just a handful
of programmers. To build software today all you need is a few good men (or women!). In this post we trace how we got here
and where we are heading next.

Tags: php, ruby, rails, agile programming, python, programming, web2.0, socialinternet, history

<clipSource>http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/the_future_of_software_development.php</clipSource>

Digg going more social?

clipped by: ghiberti

Clip Source: www.readwriteweb.com

The features will enable easier communication between diggers and allow them to form groups based around their interests. "This is really the first time that we have enabled communications between users," Digg founder Kevin Rose told BusinessWeek.

The reason for the change, implies BusinessWeek's Catherine Holahan, is that as Digg has expanded its reach beyond technology focused stories, its early users have complained that the main page has become diluted with news in topics that don't matter to them. The new features will allow users to form connections and share stories with people that have common interests.

Tags: digg, socialinternet, facebook, myspace, microsoft, sharing, web2.0, internet

<clipSource>http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/digg_getting_more_social.php</clipSource>

15 last.fm hacks

clipped by: ghiberti

Clip Source: lifehacker.com

One of the best ways to discover new music online is with Last.fm, a music recommendation community. Last.fm serves you up new tunes based on a marriage of your unique preferences and the rest of the huge Last.fm community.
