Warming to Palin

It's the second week of October. When I was a kid it would sometimes snow and always be cold by now. I'm typing this on my laptop sitting outdoors in the warm sun with no sweater or jacket on the downtown mall, a pedestrian street in Charlottesville, Va. Flowers are blooming, and butterflies and hummingbirds are hanging out, several states out of their old territory. We haven't had the heat or the air conditioning on in our house for months. The weather is perfect and we're saving money. Global warming is making it easy for us to take steps to reverse global warming. So why does the perfect summer breeze on the back of my neck scare the hell out of me?

Very often the information given is from people who are delirious, feel threatened, concerned about being responsible for an overdose, or hysterical because of the fear someone they know well may not survive. They can find it hard to trust a doctor without a clue.

A team of British and Australian researchers have found that medical students have little in the way of street smarts when it comes to recreational drugs.

Quarterly Journal of Medicine, the team reports that the majority of final-year medical students in the UK are unable to identify common recreational drugs such as cocaine by their street names - Nose Candy, Blow and Snow.

Based on a survey of 135 students at an inner-city UK medical school, the authors say the findings have implications for the teaching of pharmacology in university medical degrees.

Co-author Alison Jones, professor of medicine and toxicology at the University of Newcastle in Australia, says the students were asked first to identify the proper names of recreational drugs from a list that contained the names of legitimate licensed drugs and words sounding similar to recreational drugs

Jones says the results are of concern because the students managed to get only an average of 11 out of 24 street names correct

Arctic ocean covered by thin ice

Recent measurements of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean have found that it has melted to its lowest volume in recorded history.

Although the area of Arctic sea ice is greater than at the corresponding period in 2007 - the lowest coverage ever - experts are concerned that it may be much thinner.

Dr Walt Meier of US National Snow and Ice Data Center and colleagues say the overall ice volume in the Arctic Ocean is at least as low as 2007, and may even have dwindled more by as far as 10%.

Meier says this makes the ice more prone to melting than ever before.

The area of ocean that sea ice covers can vary dramatically from year to year, so scientists look at ice volume as a long-term indicator of the "health" of the ice.

Since satellite measurements began 30 years ago, it has been in steady decline.

"The long term trends in ice volume show a clear trend toward warming temperatures," says Meier. "The health of the ice is at the same state or worse than it was last year."

And some 3,000 people across the country are testing out balance walking, which involves ski-like poles and angled shoes. Balance walking — which is like cross- country skiing without the snow — didn't even exist a few years ago. But today, the exercise routine is turning some parks and church parking lots across metro Atlanta into grassy slopes.

For people 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of injury-related death, and close to 2 million people are treated in the emergency room every year for fall-related injuries, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Each year, nearly one-third of older adults fall.

But getting wobbly doesn't have to be a given, according to doctors who say simply taking a 20-minute daily walk can build stability.

The Cassini spacecraft observations of Saturn's largest moon, the orange-colored Titan, have given scientists a glimpse of what Earth might have been like before life evolved. They now believe Titan possesses many parallels to Earth, including lakes, rivers, channels, dunes, rain, snow, clouds, mountains and possibly volcanoes.

"Titan is just covered in carbon-bearing material -- it's a giant factory of organic chemicals," according to Ralph Lorenz of Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. "We are carbon-based life, and understanding how far along the chain of complexity towards life that chemistry can go in an environment like Titan will be important in understanding the origins of life throughout the universe."

"This extended tour is responding to these new discoveries and giving us a chance to look for more."

Unlike Earth, Titan's lakes, rivers and rain are composed of methane and ethane,

minus 290 degrees Fahrenheit

THETH, ALBANIA -- The "Accursed Mountains" tower high above the Shala Valley, snow clinging to their summits even in the summer.

For about half the year, Shala, a protected national park, is cut off by heavy snowfall that blocks access to the two rock-strewn dirt tracks snaking through the mountains. The only way in or out is a seven-hour trek by foot to the nearest road, if the snow is not too deep.

Many still live at least in part by the Kanun, a code handed down through the centuries in which "besa" -- loosely translated as word of honor or sacred promise -- is paramount. The code was adhered to by Albania's Muslim majority and Catholic and Orthodox Christian minorities.

Disobeying the Kanun could lead to harsh penalties that might include banishment or the transgressor's household being burned. A slight could lead to a blood feud that lasted for generations.

Kennedy, as he contemplated his own run for the presidency in 1965, that "some white patriot of the Southern tier will spatter his spoonful of brains in public premises before the snow flies."

It might be worth asking Governor Palin for a tally of the other favorites from her reading list.
