Ex-boxing champ shot dead in smoking dispute

LONDON (Reuters) - Former British heavyweight boxing champion James Oyebola was shot in the neck in a nightclub after asking a group of men to stop smoking, a court heard Tuesday. Prosecutor Jeremy Donne told the Old Bailey that the boxer died after the "senseless" shooting at the Chateau 6 club in Fulham, west London, in July 2007.

He never regained consciousness after being hit in the neck and leg and died in hospital four days later when doctors switched off his life-support machine.

The Nigerian-born, 6ft 9" boxer won the UK heavyweight title in 1994 and the bronze medal at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, where he lost to Lennox Lewis in the semi-finals.

Four men are on trial for his murder: Cyle Carth, 18; Dean Francis, 24; Rene McKoy, 20 and Kanyanta Mulenga, 23, all from south London. They deny murder and affray.

New giant clam species discovered

Fossils suggest that, about 125,000 years ago, the species Tridacna costata accounted for more than 80% of the area's giant clams.

"The new species are mid-sized clams - up to 40cm long and a couple of kilograms heavy," explained co-author Dr Claudio Richter, from the Alfred-Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, Germany.

The new species has a distant relative, T. gigas, which can grow up to 1.4m long.

Live specimens of T. costata appear to be restricted to very shallow waters. Other species were also found in deeper reef zones.

In "pre-human times", T. costata may have been up to 60cm long. Since then, shell size has also decreased dramatically.

"The overall decline in giant clam stocks - with the striking loss of large specimens - is a smoking gun indicating over-harvesting," said Dr Richter.

"The coral reefs in particular... may still harbour very large surprises," said Dr Richter.

Tobacco Companies Hid Information on Radioactive Polonium

Tobacco manufacturers discovered over 40 years ago that radioactive polonium-210 exists in cigarettes and tobacco smoke, and spent decades working to remove it, according to a new study published in the American Journal of Public Health. The companies tried to remove polonium -- a naturally-occurring, alpha particle-emitting constituent of the fertilizers and soil used to grow tobacco -- by creating special filters, washing the tobacco leaf and genetically altering tobacco plants, but ultimately failed. Instead of coming clean, the companies kept their internal research on polonium and information about their unsuccessful efforts to remove it secret. They didn't want to heighten public awareness of polonium in cigarettes. Polonium-210 is the lethal radioactive substance that was used to poison Russian dissident Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006.

clipper's remarks: McCain's health-care advisor, John Goodman, thinks we should deal with the problem of uninsured Americans by ordering the Census Bureau to stop calling people "uninsured." I kid you not. He says that since pretty much everyone ends up getting the medical care they need somehow or other, no one's really uninsured. If you read the whole post, you'll also see that Goodman is a little confused about how employer-provided health plans work in real life. This is also the same guy who recently said, commenting on health disparities between whites and nonwhites in the U.S., that "doctors just don’t control our over-eating, over-smoking, over-drinking, and shoot-outs in the hood." In the next few days the Census Bureau will come out with new figures, probably showing that the number of uninsured has reached an all-time high.

So I have a solution. And it will cost not one thin dime. The next president of the United States should sign an Executive Order requiring the Census Bureau to cease and desist from describing any American (even illegal aliens) as "uninsured." Instead, the Bureau should categorize people according to the likely source of payment should they need care.

So, there you have it. Voila! Problem solved.

Here is the idea: only people who are denied care are truly uninsured. Everyone who gets care is effectively insured by some mechanism. So instead of producing worthless statistics that people fling around in vacuous editorials and pointless debates, the Census Bureau should produce meaningful numbers, identifying all of the sources of funds people will draw on if they need medical care.

Australians back medical marijuana, heroin injecting rooms

MOST Australians would support clinical trials of cannabis for medical use, a new survey of more than 23,000 people has found.

Almost half the respondents said they would support regulated heroin-injecting rooms.

The nationwide survey found overwhelming support for legalising cannabis for medical reasons, backed by nearly 70 per cent, while approval of clinical trials for cannabis approached 75 per cent.

Most people also looked favourably on needle and syringe programs, supported by more than 65 per cent.

When it came to tobacco, there was firm support across the board for bans on smoking in workplaces, pubs and clubs.

More than 80 per cent of Australians wanted smoking banned in the workplace, with Canberrans most strongly in favour at close to 85 per cent.

And more than 75 per cent of respondents wanted smoking banned from pubs and clubs.

I don't usually have much weird shit happen, but one photo turned up really strange a while ago, it's of me (Brunette on left standing between strange bearded man and woman in blue fleece) and my boyfriend (kneeling looking happy about booze) on New Year's, with some of his friends (and their parents). The first picture was taken a couple of secs before the second. Nobody was smoking, there wasn't any mist at the time. There's a bit of a figure in the second one, beside me.

A new U.S. poll being released now finds 63 percent of voters support military action against Iran if diplomacy fails. The poll commissioned by the Israel Project, a group based in Washington D.C. with an office in Jerusalem, found Americans across the political spectrum see the Iranian regime as a threat to the United States - 85 percent among Democrats and 97 percent among Republicans.

Does anyone know who the Israel Project is and where I can get some of what they've been smoking? At first, I thought that I'd fallen into a timewarp back to 2002, but the current national numbers on Iraq and foreign intervention don't jive with this information. Does anyone have any details about this organization? Please tell me that this poll is bogus because I would hate to think that 62% of the American people have all come down with Down's Syndrome (AKA Neocon's disease).
