Comcast Appeals F.C.C. Sanction

Comcast made no secret of its interest in challenging the Federal Communications Commission’s order in August sanctioning the cable company for how it impeded the Internet connections of some customers as they were trying to share files over the Internet.

The central issue is whether the sanction was appropriate, given that the commission had not previously published a rule about the issue in question: Whether Internet providers can choose to block one Web site or program while allowing traffic to others. Comcast, in an attempt to crack down on its heaviest users, slowed down connections from the BitTorrent program, used to share movies and other files.

Kevin Martin, the commission’s chairman, has argued that making rules in advance is not a good method to regulate fast-moving markets like Internet service. Under his stewardship, the commission has published broad principles and has taken action only when it found that objectionable practices have occurred.

Food and energy prices are coming down in part because of a global growth slowdown that could also cool the red hot U.S. export sector - the major bright spot in an economy still struggling with a massive housing bust.

If prices keep sliding, year-over-year inflation numbers - after hitting a 17-year high last month - could soon look much healthier, reducing fears that the Federal Reserve may have to raise interest rates to stamp out rising inflation expectations.

If the growth party is over around the world, the U.S. export boom will quickly fizzle.

A pullback by some of its overseas customers offers the latest bit of unhappy news for the U.S. economy, which this year has continued to grow - if only tepidly - in large measure thanks to slowing imports and rising exports.

The halo effect from exports could already be wearing off.

The bug is that Flash videos don't play for certain Firefox 3 users on Windows XP or Vista, when using the current Flash player version 9. On YouTube, CNET TV, and other sites, embedded videos will start, but they halt after two seconds. Both Mozilla and Adobe have been aware of the issue since late May, but as yet no solution has been found. For some people suffering from this bug, it's intermittent. For others, it's a consistent block to viewing online videos.

He also took a minute to trumpet Mozilla's open-source philosophy. Since Firefox's code is open, Adobe can look at it to try to determine what is going on. But Mozilla's team can't look into Flash. Beltzner didn't blame Adobe for the bug itself, but he did say that Adobe's traditional closed software architecture is slowing down their investigation. "We hit a wall when it's a closed-source solution," he said.

One of the clumsy arguments that the McCain camp tried to make today in hopes of slowing down the media freight train over not knowing how many homes he and his wife, Cindy, own was that Barack Obama (D) is also a rich guy who lives in a mansion himself, just like McCain. I believe the term they used was "a frickin' mansion."

Guess which one is worth about $36 million and which one is worth $799,000?

Caffeine belongs to the xanthine chemical group. Adenosine is a xanthine that is naturally occurring in the brain, used as a neurotransmitter at some synapses. Because of their relation, caffeine looks a lot like adenosine to nerve cells and therefore binds to adenosine receptors in the basal forebrain. The cells then can no longer sense adenosine because caffeine is taking up the receptors. Instead of slowing down, the nerve cells speed up and stop the person from getting tired.

As a result of the blocked adenosine, there is increased neuron firing in the brain, which causes the pituitary gland to think that there is some sort of emergency. It then releases hormones telling the adrenal glands to produce adrenaline.

Venture capital deals in Quebec are slowing this year. Montreal's Reseau Capital said today a total of $68 million was invested in the second quarter, down from $153 million a year earlier and down from $86 million in the first quarter.

The sharp decline was in line with numbers for all of Canada.

"Activity fluctuates widely from quarter to quarter but the latest statistics are hardly encouraging," said Charles Cazabon, CEO of Reseau Capital, a group representing more than 500 public and private venture capital companies.

Gasoline consumption in California, the most populous state, dropped in April from the same month a year earlier, a sign this could be the third straight year of declining demand, according to a state agency report.

California drivers used 1.257 billion gallons of gasoline in April, down 2.2 percent from a year earlier and the lowest for the month since 2001, California State Board of Equalization said. Consumption was down 52 million gallons, or 4 percent, from March.

"The trend in declining demand continues not just in the state but on a national level," Anita Gore, an agency spokeswoman, said in an interview. "It comes down to high gasoline prices, the slowing economy, people finding alternate routes to travel and a growing demand for vehicles that are more efficient in their fuel use."

Californians' diminishing appetite for gasoline year after year comes as pump prices rise, the agency report showed.
