Classy, cool, hip, glamorous, even sexy—all these words have been used to describe the presumptive Democratic nominee. He has excited the young, the disenfranchised, the traditionally cynical and apathetic:

And yet we're still not satiated. Or perhaps, more accurately, we're not satisfied: for all we've seen, and read, and been told, both by and about him, there are some things we're still trying to figure out.

But the truth of the matter is that seen up close, the attraction of Barack Obama as a candidate has less to do with the cut of his suits or the fact that he's championed by hip rock singers than with an almost geeky earnestness, a decency and sobriety that he projects when speaking to a crowd. A large part of his mystique lies in his insistence on his message, and on the complexity of that message; and in his old-fashioned, almost stern will to cut the flim-flam and, in a way so retro it's almost novel, to actually address the issues.

First we had the X Factor for talented singers. Now we have the Rex Factor for hounds with an impressive howl.

Believe it or not, more than 30 dogs barked before judges to try to gain a place in a special canine choir.

Owners used every trick in the book to ensure their pet gave the best performance at the auditions.

A Jack Russell called Angus started to whine only once he listened to some Bob Dylan.

Another dog could perform only once he heard the Coronation Street theme tune, while Luciano Pavarotti's rendition of Puccini's Nessun Dorma inspired another pet to pant like mad.

Project organiser Grace Davies said: 'A bassett hound named Edward proved an accomplished bass baritone capable of howling continuously, and Zac the border collie's sing-along style was noted by the judges.'

The winners of the contest will feature in a recording of A Song For Jack in memory of retriever Swansea Jack, who won medals in the 1930s for rescuing people drowning in the docks in Swansea, south Wales.

Intertia from the cultural revolution was still a potent force on thinking at the time. I remember that when people held meetings, the hall would usually have big photos of Mao and Hua hanging front and center. Mao was called "great teacher" (伟大导师) and Hua was the "wise leader" (英明领袖). The official statement on the arrest of the Gang of Four was "The Party Central Committee led by Chairman Hua smashed the Gang of Four." Singers performed a song praising him: "In Jiaocheng's mountains, Jiaocheng's rivers, Jiaocheng has brought forth a Commissar Hua." His thick Jiaocheng, Shanxi accent and his calligraphy (said to be in the style of Yan Zhenqing) made the biggest impression on people, and the nameplates of newspapers and even institutions like Renmin University were written in Hua's Yan script.

The crowd in the cavernous auditorium were well-dressed, largely white and impeccably polite.

In the unforgiving sun they had queued to go through security screening and take their seats. Helicopters buzzed overhead and secret service look-outs prowled the roof.

Inside, a well-dressed band played soft rock, interspersed with singers belting out devotion.

When a steely-jawed MC introduced the national anthem, everyone in the auditorium stood up, and, to my amazement, so did most of the people in our press tent.

Even when the sound feed to the press tent faltered and died through the first notes, members of the press corps started their own sing-along of the Star Spangled Banner (your correspondent not included). This was clearly a patriotic crowd both inside and out.

Billed as the first joint appearance by both presidential hopefuls, it was tightly controlled to avoid clashes.

Jewish group sues YouTube over 'anti-semitic' video

A French Jewish group is suing the YouTube video-sharing website over a clip showing a host of Jewish public figures to the soundtrack of a pre-war anti-Semitic song.

The video posted on the US site YouTube and its French rival Dailymotion shows a slideshow of more than 150 French politicians, TV stars, journalists, writers, philosophers, actors, singers and comedians.

It is set to the sound of a song recorded before World War II, called Rebecca's wedding, which describes the guests at a Jewish wedding as dirty, rude and dishonest.

"We consider this video, though it names no-one, to be a photographic list of an anti-Semitic nature and therefore liable to criminal prosecution," the head of the National Bureau of Vigilance Against Anti-Semitism (BNVCA), Sammy Ghozlan, said in a statement.

He said he filed suit against Dailymotion and the author of the video, and intended to take similar action against YouTube after discovering it too was hosting the clip.

Humpback escorts woo mothers with a love song

Researchers studying migrating humpbacks off the east coast of Australia say they have recorded the strongest evidence to date that males sing to woo females, not to deter other males.

To get more information, Joshua Smith and his colleagues at the University of Queensland in Australia set up listening and observing stations at Peregian Beach on the east coast of Australia

In all, Smith and his colleagues saw 114 singers, 66 of which interacted with other whales. One-third of these joined a mother and her calf as they swam up the coast.

"We found singers preferentially joined females with a calf that had no other males accompanying them

Why males escort females that already have a calf is unclear, but they might be trying to make a good impression on the female.

this suggested that the singing escorts they observed were wooing the mothers they escorted.
