Experts say high-end watches proving to be stable investments

SINGAPORE: Seventy high-end watches from Geneva valued at over S$15 million were in Singapore last month for a public exhibition and the first-ever Asian edition of the world's most prestigious watch competition, Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève.

Even during these times of financial turmoil, global collectors said demand for luxury items such as watches is still growing and collectors are going after the rarer pieces by the more established brands.

Wei Koh, editor-in-chief and founder, Revolution Press, said: "The holy trinity of high watch-making is Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin. These are three of the most established, cherished and revered (brands), all of which represent and safeguard traditional watch-making."

AIG CEO Edward Liddy put an end to the suspense today. Here is what AIG is putting on the block: the U.S. life, retirement and pensions businesses, the personal-lines property-casualty business and at least a minority stake in its foreign life insurance business. All of AIG’s non-insurance businesses, including aircraft leasing, consumer finance division, U.S. auto insurance, a reinsurance business and asset manager, are also likely to be put on the block.

Nearly every major private equity firm with an interest in finance, including Hellman & Friedman, TPG and Corsair Capital, are expected to pore very closely over AIG’s portfolio. AIG CEO Edward Liddy knows that this has been the sale that many have been waiting for. On a conference call today, he said “dozens and dozens” of acquirers would step up and that “demand for these properties will be very high.”

AIG will sell nearly its entire life insurance business, which includes its life insurance operations in the U.S., Latin America and Japan, but will keep a controlling stake in AIA, its life insurance division in China, India, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. The company expects earnings growth of around 20% in those developing markets.

Formula One Racing held its 800th race on Sunday in Singapore,with the Singapore Grand Prix - also the first Formula One race held at night. Organizers built, then lined a 5 kilometer track with over 1,600 lamps, said to be four times brighter than those used at football stadiums. Twenty drivers drove 61 laps for a total of 309 kilometers at speeds sometimes approaching 300 kilometers per hour - in a country that once banned the sport, in part for promoting reckless driving. Massa claims pole in Singapore

Felipe Massa will be on pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen.

The top three were followed by Robert Kubica, Hekki Kovalainen, Nick Heidfeld and Sebastian Vettel.

Timo Glock, Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima rounded out the qualifying in the inaugural F1 night race in the Lion City.

Klang MP Charles Santiago hit out at the Defence Ministry's ‘complacency’ regarding the 2006 radioactive leak at Westport, Klang, by the US nuclear-powered submarine

USS Houston.

While Japan and Singapore have asked the US for more information on and put into place mechanisms in response to the incident, Mindef has said it has not received any information on it.

Because no report has been lodged on the leak, there is no probe into the matter, Mindef public relations director Col Fadzlette Osman Merican had said.

“I am appalled to note that the Malaysian Defence Ministry had been complacent about the radioactive leak by the US nuclear-powered submarine USS Houston, which berthed at Westport, Klang from Sept 16-21, 2006.

“This has implications for health, environment and quality of life of my constituents in Klang.

Singapore's High Court has ruled that the Far Eastern Economic Review (FEER) magazine defamed Singapore's leaders.

It ruled that the editor, Hugo Restall, also defamed Singapore's founding father Lee Kuan Yew and his son, current Prime Minister Lee Hsein Loong.

Singapore state media reported that Justice Woo Bih Li had reached his conclusion of defamation by summary judgement, as requested by the Lees.

In such a judgement, the court makes a ruling without the case going to trial, as it agrees with the applicant that the defence arguments are baseless, the Straits Times newspaper added.

Justice Woo found the article to mean that Lee Kuan Yew "has been running and continues to run Singapore in the same corrupt manner as Durai operated NKF and he has been using libel actions to suppress those who would question to avoid exposure of his corruption", the newspaper reported.

Sarbanes-Oxley was crippling the economy. One firm told me they would bring more than 20 companies public in the next year if the law was repealed. Its Sarbanes-Oxley’s $3 million per startup annual accounting fee that is keeping these companies private.

Third, match our competitors in China and Singapore by going to a zero capital gains tax.

Fourth, immediately pass an “all of the above” energy plan designed to bring home $500 billion of the $700 billion a year we are sending overseas. With that much energy income the American economy would boom and government revenues would grow.
