It all started with the Samurai Pork Burger. I saw this advertised outside a McDonald's in Bangkok back in 2004 and was somewhat perplexed. Why is it a Japanese name when I’m in Thailand? And what do Samurai have to do with pork? Actually, why is it called Samurai at all? Sadly, I never actually found out any of the answers, but it made me start paying closer attention to McDonald's every time I went to another country in Asia.

In Singapore, the national obsession with rice extends to having rice cakes in your burger.

Transition Contact Lenses

Researchers in Singapore have created the first-ever “transition contact lenses,” which darken automatically in response to bright sunlight.

Transition lenses have been available for eyeglasses for four decades, but the technology has never before been implemented on contact lenses.

The darkening can accomplish two tasks: it can make the wearer’s vision in bright light more comfortable, and it can protect the eyes against the sun’s damaging rays.

It’s so fast, in fact, that initial tests proved the contact lenses faster than traditional transition sunglasses on the market.

The researchers say response time is 10 to 20 seconds — much faster than the minutes it takes traditional transition sunglasses.

Two other senior administration officials told CNN that the CBS report and other similar speculation is false.

Obama is scheduled to return from Asia on November 20, after stops in Japan, Singapore, China, and South Korea. Officials have suggested Obama could announce a troop decision shortly before or after Thanksgiving.

A "breathing chair" designed by Yu-Ying Wu, a graduate from the Department of Industrial Design at the Taiwan-based Tatung University, was submitted to the international "red dot design award" design competition and won the home furniture design concept award. Wu is scheduled to receive the award next month in Singapore, according to the report by Taiwan-based United Daily News (UDN).

Prostate Awareness Month 2008

Singapore Urological Association together with Singapore Cancer Society is organizing the 4th Prostate Awareness Month campaign. Dr Ho has been involved with this public education project since it's inception in 2004. The objective is to increase awareness amongst the Singapore population on the prevalence and signs and symptoms of prostate diseases.

Dr Ho Siew Hong was invited to deliver a lecture on:

How to differentiate between benign prostate condition and prostate cancer ?

In his lecture, Dr Ho explained the signs and symptoms to 'look out' for to differentiate between benign prostate enlargement and prostate cancer. Early prostate cancer is usually detected by a blood test called PSA, prostate specific antigen. An abnormal reading warrants further investigation with an ultrasound and biopsy of the prostate gland.

Advanced Urology Course 2008

The Singapore Urological Association in conjunction with the Asian School of Urology under the auspices of Urological Association of Asia, held the Advanced Urology Course in the National University Hospital, Singapore. International and local Urology experts were invited to lecture on a spectrum of urological diseases.

Our two distinguished international speakers were Dr. Manish Patel from University of Sydney and Dr. Ganesh Gopalakrishnan from Christian Medical College, Vellore, India.

The course was well attended by over 40 participants from Singapore and the Asian region.

In his lecture, Dr Ho shared his experience and some tips and tricks on performing a perfect puncture to the kidney during PCNL surgery. Careful planning prior to surgery is necessary. Details on the techniques of puncturing the lower and upper poles of the kidney were elaborated during the lecture.
