Supreme Court Overturns Exxon Valdez Verdict

In a 5-3 ruling, with Alito sitting out, the court overturned a lower court decision that had reduced the verdict to $2.5 billion, and sent the case back saying that the punitive damage award was excessive and should not exceed about $500 million, the same as the compensatory damages

The case has dragged on so long now that the interest Exxon has earned on the original $5 billion award is now close to paying the award twice over. It's bounced back and forth between the trial court and the 9th Circuit appellate court so many times that in the last ruling in the case, in 2006, the 9th Circuit practically begged Exxon to give up,

the campaign was successful, if for no other reason than that Exxon was able to drag on the appeal long enough for President Bush to stack the court with two new business-friendly justices who are fairly hostile to the notion that regular people sitting on juries ought to be able to hit big companies where it hurts

You're in a restaurant near home and have an unexpected seizure. Must be that new medication you're taking. The ambulance driver wants to know where to take you. What do you want your friends or family to say? The nearest hospital? That could be right, but it also could be very dangerous.

The time to determine where you want to go in an emergency or for a specific health need is when you're not sick or when you don't need one. Decisions made at the last minute could be deleterious to your health.

Why? Because all hospitals are not the same. Not by a long shot.

I had until now assumed that Paulson was nothing more than the usual run-of-the-mill right wing economist. “I’m alright, Jack”. It appears he was far more dishonest to the American public than even that. He pushed then for the very thing that he knows now brought down the economy, and seems to have no intention of admitting this.

It was obvious from word one that a plan that actually worked for the Common Man wasn’t going to get backing on the Hill and even if by some miracle it did Bush would veto it. The financiers have not the least interest in your ass, it’s all about theirs - and their $2 billion in bipartisan donations (44% to Dems, 56% to Repubs) since 1990 ensured that they were going to get theirs saved first.

Racists in The Republican Blogosphere? Say It Ain’t So!

Here’s one that makes me entirely sick and truly glad that I’m not a Republican.

Apparently, floating around the Republican blogosphere is this Photo-shopped picture of Barack Obama and Sarah Palin. As you can plainly see, the Republican Governor is getting her shoes shined by Senator Barack Obama.

This REALLY crosses the line between funny and extremely bad taste. It’s out and out racism, since I’ve known several Republicans who would pass this around in a heartbeat.

I know two that are incredible racist. One I worked FOR, the other I worked WITH. I won’t name names because it’s not nice, but the one I worked WITH told me one day that "The world is going downhill because of the niggers and fags." Nice. Real nice. When I heard that, I couldn’t even respond. I simply walked away.

As I recall, this is 2008. Grow up, wake up and rise above this stuff.

What I am about to say probably resonates with alot of people who are against fascist government wars, especially those who are active, or have been active, in fighting whichever cause they believe in. I've become severely cynical about protesting, for instance, for a couple reasons. First, the police show up and film you and take your picture and it's generally intrusive on your privacy. They already know who I am, and they're not learning anything new by filming me several different times. That's one thing, but I learned to get past that. Certain privacies apparently must be discarded to show public support for peace and freedom...

The second reason I cannot go to anti war protests any more is because they are always infested with communists, at least in Los Angeles where I live. I mean, it's out of control.
