When you're just starting out, you'll probably be using the desktop or web versions of Evernote. From either, you can capture entire web pages or documents with the click of your mouse, by using the Evernote Firefox extension or bookmarklet for web content or the desktop versions for Windows and Mac.

Don't want to clip a whole page? Just select the text and or images you want before clipping to Evernote. There's even a universal keyboard shortcut (Win+A in Windows, Cmd+Ctrl+V in OS X) to create a new note from your clipboard.

You can add to your Flash Actionscripts any number of ways, but one of the easiest ways is to use the little + and – buttons above the window that displays the actual code. As expected, the + button will let you add a script, while the – button lets you delete one.

Clicking on the + button will expand a tiered menu with the same structure as the tree of script categories in the left pane. You can drill down to find the script that you want, and click to add it; the menu will also display the keyboard shortcut to add that script.

To delete a script, make sure that it’s selected, and then click the – button.

The script will immediately be deleted. Make sure that you don’t do this by accident, because there’s no confirmation. You can undo to bring it back, but if you don’t notice and move on too far, you may find yourself wondering why your script isn’t working the way you intended.

It’s often thought that there are three different types of learning style around today, and these are commonly said to be learning by listening, seeing and by experience (touching or doing). Obviously if you can combine more than one aspect of this way of learning, then whatever the information that a person is trying to learn, will stick to mind a lot better than if – for example – the information was only read, rather than read and then learnt further through experience. The point is, is that the more stimuli that occur during learning, the easier a thing is to learn.

The beauty of today's search engines is their simplicity. Type a few keywords into an empty box, and see the 10 most relevant results.

This week, Mozilla Labs expects to launch a similar interface for its Firefox Web browser. The new interface, called Ubiquity, lets users carry out all sorts of complex tasks simply by typing instructions, in the form of ordinary sentences, into a box in the browser.

For example, to e-mail a paragraph or picture from a Technology Review article to a friend using Ubiquity, simply select the text or image, press a keyboard shortcut to reveal an input box, and type "e-mail to Max."

The idea, says Beard, is to make it easier to find and share information on the Web while avoiding cumbersome copy-and-paste instructions.

Ubiquity aims to eliminate both tiresome mouse movements and the need for multiple browser plug-ins.

The project is being released in an early form--version 0.1--so it's not expected to work perfectly straightaway.

The game of Go has long been a bastion of human brilliance. While computers have gotten steadily better at playing chess and poker, they've had a harder time wrapping their silicon minds around the elegant Japanese strategy game. That's why it's a big deal that a computer Go player known as MoGo beat a top-ranked human, Myungwan Kim, yesterday.

While the complexity of chess is quite high -- there are an estimated 10¹²³ possible ways a chess game can play out -- the systematic nature of that game is susceptible to the sorts of strategies computers are good at, with libraries of endgames and simple heuristics for eliminating possible but nonsensical plays.

For yesterday's game, the MoGo software ran on a supercomputer with 800 parallel processors

A rep for the 71-year-old Oscar winner said Freeman is "doing well" after undergoing a lengthy surgery Monday night, in the wake of his rollover single-car crash.

How to Remove Unwanted Formatting From Text

clipper's remarks: It removes HTML and Word formatting, removes email reply ">" and "|" characters and will optionally remove line feeds so that broken lines are restored into proper paragraphs. At the touch of a button the stripped text is restored to the clipboard, ready for pasting into your document.

It works like a charm. I use it daily and it's one of the most useful utilities on my PC.

The only downside of StripMail is that you have to run the program each time you want to clean some text. I overcome this by assigning a hotkey to run StripMail to automatically strip the clipboard contents ready for pasting. Removing formatting is then as simple as copying the text, hitting the hotkey and pasting.

You can create the hotkey (as I did) by using the freeware program AutoHotkey but you can also do it in Windows by using a shortcut that's linked to a hotkey. Here's how:

The problem

If you've copied text from a webpage or a PDF file to an email, you've encountered the problem associated with formatting being copied along with the text. The result can look very strange indeed, with broken lines and odd fonts.

You've probably also encountered a similar problem when you copied an email reply into another document. All those crazy >>> characters get copied, along with the broken lines and paragraphs as well.

The solution

The good news is that there are several free programs available that allow you to copy the text you want without the unwanted formatting.

One of my favorites is StripMail. It's a little stand-alone program that takes the clipboard contents and converts it into plain text without formatting.
