Despite British government commitments to generate 20% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020, proposals for wind turbine installations tend to run aground pretty quickly once local opposition is voiced.

Two thirds of the UK Government’s climate change targets have been missed, and it’s renewable energy targets look set to join that list. People want digital TV recorders, plug-in hybrid vehicles, wide-screen TV’s and a multitude of other devices which contribute towards increasing energy demands. Unfortunately they don’t want nuclear power, dirty coal fired power stations, wind turbines, off-shore tidal barrages, or any other form of energy production - unless it is situated somewhere else.

SALICORNIA, IS a succulent, bushy plant found in the salty-terrains near the coast, and it holds a lot of promise as an ideal edible-oil yielding crop, which can be raised using seawater. "An improved variety of Salicornia developed by crossing with other highly drought-resistant and salt-resistant species of Salicornia, is being grown extensively in several parts of the world, including India.

The variety, SOS-10, grows well in desert sands irrigated with seawater and it can be grown along the sea shore as well," explains Felix Ryan, the Chennai-based Advisor for Development and Refugee Rehabilitation of the United Nations, and Chief Monitor, Survival by Seawater Global Movement.

MONTERREY, MEXICO (AP) — A 700-pound (310-kilogram) man once considered the world's most obese person left his home for the first time in five months Sunday with the aid of a forklift and a platform truck.

Manuel Uribe traveled to the shore of a lake in northern Mexico without ever leaving his specially designed bed. A forklift hoisted the bed onto the truck, which then hauled him to the lake, where he snacked on fish and vegetables and joked with a local boat operator.

Looking at the boatman's small craft, Uribe joked, "Too bad I can't get on it — it would sink."

His last successful trip outside his home was in March 2007, when six people pushed Uribe's wheel-equipped iron bed out to the street as a mariachi band played and a crowd gathered to greet him.

Before that, he hadn't left his home in five years.

Tom Kleven thought he'd prepare for a triathlon by swimming across Minnesota's Lake Nokomis. But a lifeguard ordered him back when he was about halfway across. And when he got back to shore, Minneapolis Park Police cited him for swimming too far. He faces a $1,000 fine and 90 days in jail if convicted, and since Kleven is a doctor, he'll have to report the incident each time he applies to have his medical license renewed.

Orangutans and palm-based biofuel don't mix

Crouching low in a canoe, my sneakers and socks are quickly soaked with river water. A stocky, shirtless park ranger in blue jeans pulls the boat across the river by rope-pulley rigged between trees. When we reach the opposite shore, we climb out of the vessel and walk along the muddy riverbanks and up through the rainforest until we reach a feeding platform. There, park rangers bang loudly on a plastic bucket. They are calling the orangutans.

I have come to northern Sumatra, an island in the Indian Ocean covered with twisting dirt roads and steep green mountains, to report on the orangutans because there isn’t much time. Experts say the world’s 30,000 remaining orangutans will go extinct in 3 to 20 years. The last of the hairy apes live on the islands of Indonesia and Malaysia, where they spend most of their time in the trees, eating fruits and leaves.

Pelosi and her like-minded ideologues do this, of course, through every means at hand, including in Pelosi’s case the manipulation of House rules so that such things as a vote on off-shore drilling never see the light of day — or democracy.

When Nancy Pelosi was elevated to Speaker of the House in January of 2007, one of her many promises was that, as Speaker, she would listen to all sides, allow debate on all issues, and make sure that after debate she would bring those issues to the House floor for a vote.

Last week, of course, she reneged on that promise when she refused not only to let a debate on offshore drilling take place, she refused to entertain a vote on the issue. We all know why she refused; she knew she would lose, and her ego is incapable of admitting she’s not only in the wrong, but is going against the widely expressed sentiments of the American people, who, the latest polling shows, are in favor of resuming offshore drilling by a margin of about 65-35 percent.
