He put those rights to the test in the late 1980s, when he tried to open a worship hall in Hialeah. Many of his fellow Cuban-Americans howled in protest. Some said it was Satanic or anti-Christian.

They also protested the slaying of animals on the property, and in 1987, the city council passed a law banning "public ritualistic animal sacrifices." The church argued that its constitutional religious rights had been violated, and six years later, the law was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Priest Fights For Santeria Followers In Coral Gables

CORAL GABLES - Jesus Suarez, a Santeria priest, had slit the throat of one goat that June afternoon. He had three more goats, two sheep and 44 chickens to go.

But before he could finish the ritual sacrifice, Coral Gables police swarmed the house where he and about 20 other followers of the Afro-Cuban religion had gathered to worship.

The officers, Suarez recalls, pointed their guns at the devotees and screamed at them to freeze. Suarez could hear a couple of worshippers in the front yard yelling, "No dispare!" Don't shoot!

Soon there were TV vans on the street. Suarez counted 25 police cars.

Soon thereafter, word of the raid made its way to the great defender of Santeria in the United States. That would be Ernesto Pichardo: high priest, physical extension of the fire spirit Shango and co-founder of the Church of the Lukumi Babalu Aye, the first incorporated Santeria church in the nation.

Do we really need another George Bush in the White house, even if this time, it's second in command?

I never vote straight Dem or Rep.... I vote the competency of the leader, and my friends, I think every time I try to see both sides objectively, one side, keeps playing lowball games which lets down the American people who deserve better.

Choosing a woman who is UNQUALIFIED WOMAN demeans competent REPUBLICAN WOMEN LEADERS as well as Women voters.

Katherin Sibelius (sp) would have been a great choice as a competent, intelligent woman, for example. Don't you think McCain insults his Republican party by choosing someone less than the absolute best for his "beloved" country?

This is shameful to ALL AMERICANS no matter what side of the fence you sit on.... they are hiding Palin from the media for a good reason.

Pentagon, Lockheed rebut F-35 fighter jet critics

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon and Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), its largest supplier, sought on Friday to shoot down criticism of their $299 billion F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program, the costliest planned U.S. arms buy ever.

Development of the family of radar-evading, multi-role, single engine F-35 fighters was co-financed by Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey, Canada, Australia, Denmark and Norway.

F-35 competitors include Saab's (SAABb.ST: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) Gripen, the Dassault (AVMD.PA: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) Rafale, MiG-35 and Sukhoi Su-35, and the Eurofighter Typhoon, made by a consortium of British, German, Italian and Spanish companies.

The West Australian newspaper reported earlier this month that F-35s had been "clubbed like baby seals" by simulated Sukhois at war games in Hawaii last month.

Sarah Palin spent $400,000 of state money to "educate" Alaskans about aerial hunting of wolves and bears. State tax money was used to directly influence the outcome of proposition 2 which would have limited aerial shooting of predators. Since Alaskans had previously voted twice to ban aerial shooting of predators, Palin used state tax money to buy support for aerial shooting. Buying votes with tax money worked - proposition two was voted down on 8/26/08.

What is with all these praises by Gov. Sarah Palin for John McCain the "War Hero"?

McCain flew 23 bombing missions over North Vietnam in 1972 before being shot down and allowed to live.

Considering all the horror he unleashed on a third world country of rice farmers for the war profiteers in this country, he should be wearing sackcloth and ashes in repentance. Instead he prostituted his prisoner-of-war status for political gain.

And what is Palin talking about when she says we have almost won the war in Iraq? What war? You mean the "turkey shoot" by the world's largest military colossus that resulted in the illegal invasion and occupation of a sovereign nation for big oil, Halliburton and all the other war profiteers?

Are you experiencing disturbing, election-related thoughts? When you close your eyes at night, do the colors of CNN's "magic" electoral map dance in your head like red and blue sugarplums?

Are you at once totally sick of election news and insatiably hungry for more? As a result, are you sick of yourself?

Me too, and I don't think we're alone. In the last few weeks, I've noticed a malaise of unprecedented proportions descending on the American public. As much as we want to think and talk about subjects other than the election, we can't.

And even though we may hate ourselves in the morning, we can't resist the quick fix of a screaming Huffington Post headline or a Bill O'Reilly conniption fit.

You think I'm talking about campaign fatigue? Sadly, we're way beyond that.

We're so addicted to the rush of this election, it probably won't be long until we're attempting to melt down Wolf Blitzer and shoot him into our veins.

Mark Benjamin, Salon.com: Wildlife activists thought they had seen the worst in 2003 when Frank Murkowski, then the Republican governor of Alaska, signed a bill ramping up state programs to gun down wild wolves from airplanes, inviting average citizens to participate. Wolves, Murkowski believed, were clearly better than humans at killing elk and moose, and humans needed to even the playing field.

But that was before Sarah Palin took Murkowski's job at the end of 2006. She went one step, or paw, further. Palin didn't think Alaskans should be allowed to chase wolves from aircraft and shoot them — they should be encouraged to do so. Palin's administration put a bounty on wolves' heads, or to be more precise, on their mitts.

U.S. House of Representatives

Alaska is truly our nation's last frontier. It is also the last place in the U.S. where a few hunters still use aircraft to chase and kill wolves. They shoot these animals from the air or chase them to exhaustion before landing and shooting them point blank.

As recently as July, state wildlife agency personnel in Alaska staked out a known wolf denning site -- a practice that is illegal under Alaska law -- and, using helicopters, gunned down 14 adult wolves from the air. When they landed, they found the 14 helpless pups in the nearby dens -- just weeks old -- and methodically shot each one in the head. 28 wolves gunned down in all.

Congress passed a law thirty five years ago to put an end to aerial hunting. But Alaska is exploiting a loophole in federal law to resume the practice, not only for wolves, but bears as well. Hundreds of scientists have condemned what Alaska is doing, even as other states threaten to follow Alaska's lead.

Palin, McCain's vice presidential running mate, has had frequent run-ins with environmentalists.

She has defended Alaska's right to shoot down wolves from the air to boost caribou and moose herds for hunters, and - contrary to a view held by McCain - is not convinced that global warming is the result of human activity.

Environmentalists have nicknamed Palin the "killa from Wasilla," a reference to the small town where she formerly was mayor.

"Her philosophy from our perspective is cut, kill, dig and drill," said John Toppenberg, director of the Alaska Wildlife Alliance, maintaining she is "in the Stone Age of wildlife management and is very opposed to utilizing accepted science."

State officials characterized the killings as humanitarian, saying the pups would have suffered and eventually died without the care of their parents. Environmentalists argued they were killed to boost caribou populations to the benefit of hunters.
